@sundancer neither. 9th edition – It’s basically a refinement of 8th edition (a few common sense inclusions to stop people breaking the rules and a bit of streamlining), freely available as are all the army books:

April 15, 2019 at 11:48 am #1377692@mage it’s funny but I wouldn’t have picked Lincoln as a CSM player… No coffee for a few days? Congrats on that 🙂 yeah player base is a big blocker for most new games. 40 points.
@limburger still cold over your way? We’re just about to hit the cold season here now so would have thought you would have had a bit of relief by now. Ah the complete Conan, good pickup. Will have to confess it took me about 3 or 4 goes to get more than a few pages in to The Phoenix on the Sword – there was one really terrible line a few pages in – “go into the night creatures of the night” or similar that nearly made me want to throw the book away every time I got to it, but once I got past that one line the rest of the collective omnibus was just brilliant 🙂 Ah yes regrettably there seems to be a lack of future support for a lot of games now. Could be a symptom of the KS age where people feel the need to turn over new games regularly rather than focusing on building up existing ones. 40 points.
@horati0nosebl0wer congrats on finishing the Eldar 🙂 they look really good. I once read someone quipping about painting 6mm that instead of being faster (assumedly compared to 28mm) It’s the same speed just with more squinting. Ah Ticket to ride is my GF’s favourite board game of all time. Mmm new Faderhead. I’m so far behind on the album front. Think I have only bought one album released in 2018 or 2019, and that was actually an EP (Bad Witch – NIN), and that’s still in the shrink-wrap… Really nice work on the bases. You don’t have a Necronomicon? Probably for the best – in this day and age someone would probably just digitise it, convert it to a PDF or ePub and it would appear on every tablet around the globe im hours… Slightly more seriously, I must get round to making a prop Necronomicon one day. Just because it would be awesome. 50 points.
@woldenspoons your comment reminded me of this game from the 80’s. Never played it but I gather it was about as serious as Battle Cattle…

I was looking at picking up the KoW Historical supplement at one point but never quite got around to it. I sort of parked my KoW project when my FLGS closed – really should resurrect that after I clear the current batch of projects… 40 points.
@robert nice looking space rats! Warzone? Is this part of an army or just as a hobby project? Yes I’ve got to confess that minis tend to make me have a second look at a game that I would otherwise pass by, and mean I could be missing some gems simply because they use standees or tokens. Which is a bit of a shame as there are some great game mechanics out there for board and card games, and non-mini games usually have gorgeous artwork by comparison. Ah restic – have had er, ‘mixed’ experience with that stuff in the past. Not too bad once you know what you are working with but on first inspection it can look like regular hard plastic, I think that’s where the angst starts 😉 Great looking Dwarves. Could we impose on you for a size comparison shot or a height measurement? Also, what type of liquid cement are you using for the homemade greenstuff? is it just standard plastic glue? I’m sick of the store bought liquid green stuff drying out on me and the 2 part I find a bit fiddly with my fingers and lack of patience 😉 My plan with a lot of the pre-Napoleonic minis is just to treat them as either mercenary forces or the troops of some small province or Baron so that it doesn’t matter too much about colours/heraldry. Napoleonics would have been a lot simpler if the British hadn’t gone and changed hats at the half time break 😉 😛 60 points.
@sundancer ah the same gaming issues that confront us all 🙂 So you’re picking up both the new bits of SWL kit then? 40 points.
@blinky465 hope the car is OK now. Great progress on the MoTU! Wow, had forgotten half of those characters 🙂 Best of luck getting stuck into painting Greyskull, really keen to see the finished piece in all it’s glory 😉 40 points.
@oriskany sorry I missed the live stream (time commitments regrettably) looking forward to catching up on it. Reminds me that my grandfather collected a series of magazine publications on the Falklands War for me. I was too young to really get the benefit of them when he originally passed them on to me. I think they are in a box in my garage (haven’t unpacked a lot of stuff 5 years after moving in, you know how it goes… 🙂 ) Must have a look for them when I’m next playing packing tetris, would be a handy resource. Yes agree if you know the existing story for a game then getting on board is much easier. And yes, games that hand you a toolbox pretty much guarantee their own future proofing. I personally think that something as simple as providing a ‘points calculator’ for how equivalent values of game components were arrived at would let players put together DIY forces and expand the life of many games. Wow, 80’s flashback music 🙂 50 points.
April 15, 2019 at 11:58 am #1377694@evilstu I’ll keep adding Rebels and Imperium to my collection but the clone wars stuff will get a pass. They don’t ring a bell… just no.. “want” factor
April 15, 2019 at 12:07 pm #1377696And because I owe @rayzryr a bit of info on the Shiledwolf Shield Maiden sprues…
Part 1 of 2:
Kit contains command and troop sprues. No idea in what ratio as I got mine from KS at the tail end of the campaign and am pretty sure I ended up with too many of the command sprues in the big box o’ stuff I received.
Command sprue with 4 minis (back of torso can be affixed with cape or no cape options)
Troop sprue, with 6 minis
Sprues are set up to offer the choice of assembling as shield maidens (with hand weapon and shield) or rangers, with cloaks and crossbows. Plenty of detail (the heads/faces/hair look great and will be used in many of my on-going conversion henceforth, and the woodgrain on the shields is really nice too), lots of spare components and the parts fit really well (ball and socket joining system on the arms/head and pins on the torso. connection points to the sprue leave a little to be desired so it does require a little clean-up work once they are clipped off.
Minis are finer/slimmer than most similar male minis which may be a slight issue depending on parts conversion (a close look at my recent Nordic army will let you see that all the male standard bearers and musicians have very underdeveloped left arms – Yup there were no command components in the fireforge kits so I just used the Shield Wolf command components as I had a bunch of them – itf it looks too comical I’ll green stuff on some armour later…). Height wise, exaggerated 28mm. Plastics were made by Renedra and they came with square 25mm Freebooter bases – notable as the bases are recessed/have a lip on the outside – possibly to allow water effects to be added in?
April 15, 2019 at 12:18 pm #1377697Part 2 of 2:
A couple of quick conversions I tried out – apologies these are very rough and ready. I just grabbed some spare bits that were literally sitting on my work bench to see how the parts looked together. So no clean-up work etc was done 🙂
Left to right – Shield Wolf Shieldmaiden on Freebooter base, conversion with GW Daemonette on GW 25mm base, Shieldwolf mini converted to look like High Elf Maiden Guard on 20mm printed base.
And a size/scale comparison:
L to R: GW Priest of Ulric (2003 model so some subsequent scale creep in the GW range), Shieldwolf Shield maiden (noting Freebooter base so lower profile) GW Daemonette conversion, Shieldwolf torso on standard height base with GW head and arm components, GW Way watcher (Again, from around 2003 so much smaller than their newer sculpts).
For a non-GW comparison:
Ranges L to R: Reaper, Reaper, Bombshell Minis, Fireforge, North Star/Osprey/Frostgrave, Shieldwolf, Wargames Factory (I think…) and Zealot Minis. Note that once again the Shieldmaiden is on a Freebooter base and most of the others still have a moulded base affixed.
April 15, 2019 at 12:19 pm #1377699@sundancer I know what you mean. The films were a nice diversion but for me it’s all about the classic trilogy (or Trilogy +1 as I personally quite liked Rogue One…)
April 15, 2019 at 3:02 pm #1377801April 15, 2019 at 5:21 pm #1377855Closest things I had to hand @evilstu. GW Plague Marine and an armless Mantic Dwarf! This guy also has a wee sticky up bit on his helmet so would be one of the taller models.
April 15, 2019 at 5:26 pm #1377856Homemade green stuff…
+
=
Not sure how good it is yet and whether I need to add more sprue. The glue was approaching the end and it is why I decided to experiment. I have heard aircraft modellers talk about doing this but never seen it in practise. The fact it has quite good surface tension should be useful.
April 15, 2019 at 6:16 pm #1377870@robert it can’t be worse than liquid greenstuff.
All caught up on Game of Thrones so I’ve ventured back to Social Media.
April 15, 2019 at 7:08 pm #1377918@robert I heard about this ‘cheap’ greenstuff trick decades ago (ie : pre internet it was). It’s abusing the plastic melting property of the glue, so in theory it should work. I’ve never used it myself.
@evilstu : Conan difficult ? *eep* I’ve only ever read the Dutch tranlsations of some of these stories ages ago.
I’ve read both LoTR and the Hobbit in English though.
Gibsons’ Neuromancer is the one book I’ve struggling with to read, because the first few paragraphs were so weird :“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel … ”
*eh* … I think he’s referring to the static noise of classic tv channels here ? Or is it supposed to be black ?A few minis from the Black rose wars set and Zombicide nun as comparison :
Chronos is a beast … absolutely stunning in detail.
The figure on the right is a wizard from the 5-6 player expansion ‘hidden thorns’.
Medusa on the left (another wizard with her own ‘Myth’ based set of spells) and Chronos are part of the ‘Chronos’ expansion.
It’s not quite CMON level detail, but it is damned close and as the image shows the heroes definitely are bigger (32mm heroic ?)April 15, 2019 at 7:56 pm #1377944@robert Boxes… sooo many little boxes with small plastic bags to hold fiddly bits with original figures (and the occasional base that I built up to show the figure off with). Good stuff to see going on with the experimentation. I might try that out after I get moved and resettled with more units to fool around with.
@evilstu Yes, there was some of that. I just gave up on trying to be as detailed as some of the insane painters that I dug up for inspiration on the Epic forces. As far as books I’d say that looking into odd history and finding a photographic record of medical examination from Johns Hopkins’ library (class photos from when it was illegal in the US to train to perform autopsies) there is definitely still out there that is interesting in a weird way.
@tuffyears Anniversary prize!?! I need to get back onto my account. I’ve likely missed so many cool promo tanks. Then again I would likely just keep grinding with my PzIV (normal and Girls und Panzer edition) aside from going further up the German line
@limburger Oooh nice stuff. Very very nice Black Rose stuff. I wasn’t too keen on the Zombicide sculpts when looking over renders. I think that the industry may have been a little ahead of itself with Anima Tactics regarding the truly fine detail figures. It might’ve been the scale, the price, or the lack of achievable technical skill for the average painter but the line died harshly. I think that there was some hope for Helldorado, as another dead game, but again the game just didn’t take off in volume for some reason.
Time to go get food and then work… totally not inspired by the music
April 15, 2019 at 9:07 pm #1377964April 16, 2019 at 8:09 am #1378050Checking over the email I neglect during the week it looks like the Legends of Signum Kickstarter is in its final shipments so I should have a butt ton of figures delivered before I move (questionable happy face). I’m thinking I might bother my roommate to be for the keys early so I can start to move things earlier since I have one day off a week (the day prior is an overnight shift and then come home to sleep so not a full day by me).
Anywho, since I did finish the army I have the itch to actually paint something of a regular 28mm scale. The problem is keeping my stuff that’s out and unpacked to a minimum before my move. Argh! Mobile painting is not a pleasant thing when there are so many things to have available.
April 16, 2019 at 10:04 am #1378113@evilstu I have the KoW historicals book. I don’t think there are many differences in the rules from the fantasy game. The army lists are very generic. There is a big list of troop types that anyone can take and then there is a separate list to give your army flavour – Mongols have lots of horse troops, think Celts have chariots, Norman cavalry is better than average etc. Never played it though.
Space Rats are from Mantic – their Veer-mym. It is stuff I got from a Deadzone Kickstarter. It is also the first thing that came out of a box I decided to try and get all the bits built and sorted out from.
Lip bases seem to be in fashion these days are Warlord’s round bases have them now. I still like using basing render to build my bases up, it is very relaxing to do and I sometimes do it even if the base doesn’t need it.
@sundancer I love Star Wars but never bought any of the Legion stuff. No interest in Droids or anything from the prequels. If they release an Ewok army though, then I would be tempted!
@tuffyears I am sure you have answered this many times, but is it Tuffy Ears or Tuff Years? If it is the former, I imagine you to be all soft and cuddly like an Ewok, if it is the later, you have a shaven head, bomber jacket and want to fight me for imagining you as an Ewok 🙂 Also well done on your award. Never got into WoT. Played a bit of Warships and War Thunder in the past but i’d prefer to play with physical toys instead (though the planes in War Thunder were great).
@limburger yeah, it works ok. I just need to work out if I want it thicker or thinner. Yeah, the Chronos looks amazing and the others look as if they will be grand to paint up. The detail looks deep enough to take and hold a wash.
Some non-sandwich inspiring music today 🙂 All Irish by the way.
