Welcome All to another Hobby Weekender! As per tradition started generations ago, and handed down from wise elders, the intro blurb is shamelessly cut and paste below once again and possibly for all time…:
To the uninitiated, this is a virtual hobby hangout here on the forum. It is something fun and silly with a little more ‘oomph’. Its not just show and tell with your models. Its chatting, getting to know one another, community building. Think of it as a sort of club like hobby session. Everyone is welcome, of course, and there are a few rules to abide by. Let it go as OT as you like with chatting with folks. BoW/OTT is a special, unique community, and this little weekly thread is a tradition on these forums. Though not for everyone, if you are still reading and keen, then it is for you. If not, best click out.
We do a few things on this thread that usually lasts from Friday or Saturday til about Wednesday or Thursday. My say is final in this silly little corner of the internet. Fear not, for this is your safe place against the outside world of flame wars, trolling and all that other crap.
(1) Make a pledge for the weekend. It can be painting, assembly, priming, converting, background writing, terrain, you name it. Just gotta be relevant to hobbying or gaming.
(2) Chat with people. Be friendly. Do get to know one another, be kind, provide positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. Do not post up your real name, credit card, bank details or home address info.
(3) I will list out questions. Answer them. Longer answers = more points. Also, points are being assigned to something else as it confused some folk for a while.
(4) Awards will be given out at the end of the thread and you shall be awarded XP, added to your account profile by the wonderful @lancorz . Think of him as the ever vigilant Batman of the forums who keeps a careful eye on the status quo, but also acts in a way, like Alfred; with a calm disposition and the attentive nature of a concierge.
(5) Scottish Pub Law rules: no discussion of religion or politics**. Keep it clean. Behave. Be nice, be kind. Walk away if you get angry. Don’t be a dick.
Also there are bonuses for the following ‘Achievements’:
· Most Valuable Player (most engaged with topic)
· Fire Starter (topic starter, encourages the member circulation)
· Hobby Champ (most hobby over the weekend)
· Meme Lord (ryhmes, funnies & memes)
· Pun-Tertainment (best pun)
· Brush Licker (painting & terrain)
· Headliner DJ (most eclectic music)
· Armchair Commander (weekend battle reports)
· Community Usher (helpful & engaged)
· Storyteller (weekly discussion & story)Note: All points are awarded in fictional currencies…
And there are weekly questions to get the conversation going. So, for this week:
1. OK, the new year stands before us all like a blank canvas in need of paint from a master artisan. I’m sure we’ve all promised to join a gym/drink less/quit or take up smoking/stop sticking marshmallows on to hedgehogs quills or whatever flavour your particular new year’s resolution may or may not have been. All that aside, do you have anything hobby related you would like to get done, try out or possibly or revisit this year?
2. Favourite beverages when doing hobby stuff? Hot and cold.
3. Any upcoming films, TV series, books, graphic novels or game supplements due for release this year that you are particularly looking forward to? Anything specific you would like to see?
OK Team, over to you. And for anyone who hasn’t ever joined in on one of these threads before, please feel free to say hello 🙂
January 11, 2019 at 2:11 am #1327878I’ve got no bad habits ( booze , smokes or weight ) to give up I’m afraid . My life is so boring …. I’m hoping to finish off all the projects I started and never finished over the last ( two or three really ) year . I’ve got tanks waiting for crews , I’ve got half built planes and vehicles waiting for specific detail parts to be found in the parts box or scratch built , and I’ve got a few figures that need their paint jobs finished , Sometimes I got bored with stuff , sometimes the kit bash just wasn’t working out so it get’s frustrating and sometimes a new shiny pushed it’s way to the front of the pile . So I resolve to finish one old project between each new project , I hope . I’m off to a good start as this week I’ve painted , weathered and added stowage to a 1/56 scale Panther tank I started a year or so ago and I just built 3 1/72 scale Russian T-70 tanks for a friend .
Beverages , I’m partial to a cup of Tea . Always good to keep it well away from the work bench as Tea tastes terrible once you’ve cleaned your paint brush in it , although acrylic paint dosn’t taste as bad as enamel paint
I’m a big fan of Game of Thrones and Vikings , so I’m looking forward to the complete box sets when both series are finished . Haynes , the guys who do the car repair books , have been publishing books on Aircraft and Tanks , and IRC this year should see the release of a couple more tank books which should end up on my shelf
January 11, 2019 at 6:01 am #13279441. I see the insane logic of marshmallow hedgehogs but not quite the reason behind alternating between large and small ones…. Realistically I’ve gone in for the 2019 mini painting task list that @lawnor put together to actually get things done. Aside from that I’m thinking that getting into bust painting that I’ve got a few pieces the likes of which are demonstrated by @yogiebear . Beyond that I’ll say not too much as I might have to move again this summer.
2. Favorite hobby beverages … cold (sort of) a good stout/porter/IPA while for hot I can’t go wrong with a mug of Earl Grey or pu erh (agreed @a27cromwell tea looks too much like water after a couple washes and has ended up ruined by a stupid mistake)
3. I am looking forward to the release of the second chapter of the remake of IT in September. I also need to look at all the Kickstarters that I have that are due to be arriving this year. Among them are the games that I look forward to are Brutality, War for Chicken Island and Legends of Signum (only for the minis). There are videogames, comics and some books to be delivered but I think the regular media stuff is what we’re after. Mini-wise I’m still awaiting the single figures for Kingdom Death 1.5 and seeing they weren’t joking when announcing that delivery was for 2020 back in 2016. I also will be looking forward to every month as I subscribe to the L5R Minicrate on top of the one for WarmaHordes so I need to paint quickly or trade/gift stuff.
January 11, 2019 at 6:23 am #1327946Ok, let’s begin:
HAHAHAHA! No, I stopped doing that ages ago.
Play more, build more and maybe win something 😉
2. Favourite beverages when doing hobby stuff? Hot and cold.
Hot: COFFEE! All hail coffee. Everybody else is wrong!
Cold: Fritz-Kola. Made in Hamburg and has more UMPF. They even have coffee flavoured cola. (LINK)
3. Any upcoming films, TV series, books, graphic novels or game supplements due for release this year that you are particularly looking forward to? Anything specific you would like to see?
Can’t think of anything much besides Star Wars IX (and only to see how the “end” it). Other than that I’m somewhat disconnected from such things. If they cross my path I might watch them but in the last 5 years or so every hyped movie or TV show left me something like “meh”.
Hobbypledge (sort of): With my new toys (aka soldering iron) I’m curious of how much LED I can fit into…. hmm… maybe… we will see 😉
And now some music:
January 11, 2019 at 6:43 am #1327948Gosh it barely seems last year we were doing all this.
1. OK, the new year stands before us all like a blank canvas in need of paint from a master artisan. Well I’m now a Mantic Pathfinder ? so that is so something new for the year. Going to be hard work but rewarding.
2. Favourite beverages when doing hobby stuff? Hot and cold.
I like to have coffee AND a fizzy can on hand. What can I say? I live dangerously! I have the frankly fantastic GeeDubya new fangled Paint pot so brush dipping errors should go to a minimum.
3. Any upcoming films, TV series, books, graphic novels or game supplements due for release this year that you are particularly looking forward to? Anything specific you would like to see?
I think next year is the Green Lantern Corps movie so I’ll choose something else. Good shout on Game of Thrones. The Resident Evil 2 remake looks great too, must ignore the board game…
January 11, 2019 at 6:57 am #1327958Morning/afternoon/evening all
Hoping for a quiet weekend to get a game of Resident Evil 2 in. We’ve played the starter Mission and the lads hve got their Characters to the Police Station intact so the next Mission starts the game proper. Painting Wise Matty and Myself have finished the Kraken and are pondering what to do next, although that probably wont start until Monday now.
The Questions:
1. I don’t really make New Year Resolutions because i’ve usually broken them an hour after making them. I prefer to play things by ear (except Piano’s…. they hurt). It’s the same with hobby. I’ll plan all the stuff I want to get and something shinier will come along and ruin my plans. I prefer just to get what I want, when I want and paint it up before moving on to whatever else takes my fancy.
2. Errrm Tea mainly. I know, i’m boring, but I just like a good cup of tea. Matty likes Hot Chocolate because… well it’s chocolate innit and he doesnt like any other hot drinks (he’s strange like that).
3. Uhhhm I suppose there’s a couple of things, The final season of A Game of Thrones, Season 4 of The Last Kingdom (if that comes out this year), aand Avengers Endgame. Theres a few others but they are things I can take or leave.
Catch ya later guys

@biggabum you skipped the “cold drink” section of the question 😉
January 11, 2019 at 7:28 am #13279611. OK, the new year stands before us all like a blank canvas in need of paint from a master artisan. I gave up on New Year resolutions a few years back – it’s the only one I’ve managed to keep! Anyway I hope to get on and finish some hobby project (like everyone else) but Star Wars Legion is the first one up – I need to finish all that I have.
2. Favourite beverages when doing hobby stuff? Hot and cold.
I tend to hobby of an evening with a cup of Tea by my side, I have a really big mug so it is hard to get confused with my small glass. In terms of cold drinks it would be Dr Pepper Zero, I don’t drink alcohol never have done, can’t stand the taste which was really funny when I included a winelands tour in the honeymoon and had to spend the day trying not to make a urgh face at all the expensive winerys we were visiting. I couldn’t wait to buy a coke at lunchtime.
3. Any upcoming films, TV series, books, graphic novels or game supplements due for release this year that you are particularly looking forward to? Anything specific you would like to see?
I’m looking forward to Star Wars IX at the end of the year and Chronicle X finally arriving in my hands from the kickstarter last year.
In terms of the hobby pledge for the weekend – I hope to revisit Hawk and try the tips for painting black that @horati0nosebl0wer linked for me. I also have some wookies sitting in the shed that I primed last Sunday.
January 11, 2019 at 7:40 am #1327962@sundancer I did didn’t I…. Not really a big drinker of cold drinks other than Water (I did say I was boring ;-D ) but I do like a drop of Dandylion and Burdock now and again.
January 11, 2019 at 8:37 am #1328023- Actually play some games of 40k (the recent news that Firestorm Games will be opening their 3rd store in Swindon, with 20 gaming tables, should help makes this a lot easier…)
- Can’t beat an ice-cold Coke. If it’s nippy might swap out for a hot chocolate 😉
- Oh, so much stuff:
- Books, comics & gaming fiction – The ongoing Vigilus narrative for 40k; Gaunt’s Ghosts: The Anarch; the Horus Heresy moving into The Solar War; Alistair Reynolds sequel to Revenger, Shadow Captain (arrived yesterday, will be reading today); the next Infinity lore book; Codex Primaris / Space Marines redux; Ann Leckie’s (author of the multiple award-winning Imperial Radch sequence) first fantasy novel, The Raven Tower; more Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle; DC’s The Wildstorm series by Warren Ellis & friends entering it’s back end; the return of Young Justice (1st issue hit Wednesday – it was great); I am oddly intrigued by Marvel’s Age of X-Man event, a neat-looking take on Age of Apocalypse (and yes, for at least a couple of months all of the X-books are getting re-titled just like back in AoA); Star Wars – the ongoing book is heading towards Empire Strikes Back, and the encroaching atmosphere of menace is just sublime.
- Films – well there’s a little crop of films due in the next few months by a small indie studio: Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame, Spider-Man Far from Home & X-Men: Dark Phoenix; Alita Battle Angel; Star Wars Episode IX; Wonder Woman 1984;
- TV – don’t tend to watch so much tv, but new seasons are incoming for My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan; The Mandalorian….
and my paint-stripping endeavors finally dried out so began rebuilding the Guard elements, and they came out pretty good:
And it suddenly occured to me just how comically OTT the Catachan Jungle Fighter plastics really are (not a complaint, I ****ing love this kit as it scratches my inner nerd need to have an excuse to quote 80’s action movie one-liners when gaming, and I’ve another 70+ to strip from my old army), especially compared to Space Marines.
Here, alongside a Space Marine Scout;
A MkIII Space Marine;
And, most epicly, one of these is the pinnacle of humanity, the most fearless defenders of The Imperium of Man, equipped with the finest arms & armour, the other is a Primaris Space Marine 😀
January 11, 2019 at 12:08 pm #1328189Okay this has taken off nicely! I have my son so will post when I can. Here are some hobby progress pics and two memes for submissiom
January 11, 2019 at 2:20 pm #1328326@mage those GoT minis do look most spiffy 🙂
For my part decided to boost that 5-man squad I built using Deathwatch legs up to a full 10-man squad:
And I do like how they look as a unit:
Those more mobile legs do make them look very… tactical…. and I mean that in the John Wick use of the word rather than the squad description 🙂
Accordingly I think these will be what I use when I get around to rebuilding my Raptors army – once upon a time this Raven Guard-successor was the only Marine army I built to completion, having a 2000 point force that I took to a GT in the early 2000’s (’03 I think that was), partly because their colour scheme – Camo Green on armour & weapon cases – was dead simple and partly because the fluff in the 3rd War for Armageddon of these bad-ass Astartes who specialise in jungle fighting just sounded cool. And everything that I’ve learnt since – how they get screwed other almost as much as the Sycthes of the Emperor, Lamenters & Crimson Fists, then carry on but without the recognition – just appealed to me. Anyway, I had some Raptors insignia from Shapeways for the right shoulderpads, and will probably order a batch of lefties come payday, along with some other gubbins….
January 11, 2019 at 4:53 pm #1328433@jodain Uh oh. You’ve mentioned The Game. Last year @sundancer was the vict-recipient of a great gift for SW:L. There might be reindeer regular troopers, snowman snowtroopers (better camo, of course), or tinsel/light decorated wookies in the future. There’s a whole year to worry, forget and then worry about these things.
@sundancer The fire was supposed to be left in the last thread, silly man.
Augh! It burns! It burns!!! My eyes and ears!
Now technically we did start this, but it might be better to put out this flaming dumpster.
How about smothering it with heavy bass fire retardant?
@woldenspoons Good luck with the Pathfinder position. I knew a guy who had his hands full with all sorts of event building for my old Malifaux gaming group. It sucks when one of the better FLGS shuts down and the others are dressed up card shops.
@biggabum Playing piano by ear is fine… its everyone listening to the fool that doesn’t know how to play that’s the rub of it. Now if you actually are playing the piano with your ears I do agree that it might not be the best for you. Feet and elbows are excellent alternative ways of playing it.
@mage and @dawfydd Always motivating to see the progress of your stuff to kick me a bit. I finally got some work done on a couple of things since I’ve been putting off painting for building/priming. Here is the WIP of a gaming piece commission that I’ve had a halfhearted urge to paint and a rail golem for Malifaux that I was pleased to get the hand tools on the basing and build the wheelbarrow. There’s more work to be done but its the beginning of a new year and plenty of things to work on in my list.
One mad monkeyboy that went bananas! I heard that he was going to be used as a segue character for a campaign into Dark Sun. Yes… more highlighting is needed.
A fun model that I had picked up to face against a Guild player or anyone throwing fire. I will probably be dusting the base, wheelbarrow and feet a little with dry pigment. I’ll be touching up the eyes, limb ports, smokestacks and chest with a bit of white and then orange/red to give it a look of internal flame.
January 11, 2019 at 8:35 pm #1328578January 11, 2019 at 9:11 pm #1328588OK Team going to do replies later but going to drop in a pledge just to make sure I get some hobby in this weekend:
– Second coat of red ink to my Knights of the White Wolf (I missed a lot of bits on my first pass)
– More work on my Brets
– Progress my Middenheim force
– Maybe start tinkering some more with my High Elf Sea Patrol?…
