Nice work so far. Now get cracking!
@torros <15 points>
Cool gun, 15 points
Interesting game. Now get painting, troopers!
Nothing like a crunchy and a strong cup of coffee.
A compelte pledge? The officers are both done, is that what you finished? Hard to keep track of so much material. Points pending. Cheat sheets are so handy.
@oriskany <10 points>
Cool and polite meme with some suave and context. Well played.
@evilstu <5 points>
Death Squirrels? No. Just no.

With my own pledge, Which has not been photographed yet, I have finished the brown on my Ogres (belts, straps and boots) which was simpler and more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I am working my way through the metal:
Gun Metal > Plate mail > Dark tone > silver (edge higlight) > blood effect (if it’s a weapn)
Right now I have five models awaiting plate mail and five awaiting dark tone. Im off to the movies now so cant, despite really wanting to, see them being finished with the metal tonight. I might finish the plate mail when I get home depending on how late it is as work tomorrow and its early. Then a barebcue with some x wing, d and d and some hobby (star wars legion) after work so its not all bad. Still, I think Monday at the earliest is when I will finish the metal. I may, however, get the Ogres (minus the Butcher, he fell by the wayside) finished inside this pledge.
August 11, 2018 at 7:40 pm #1250947Well, you like it as an adult and didnt as a kid? Point proven? Hahaha.
Right, I better shower and change. Time for Ant Man and the Wasp

Finishing Johnny Alpha tonight. Just a quick few mins while I watch the end of Star Wars ep. III on ITV
August 11, 2018 at 8:41 pm #1250962Right, so made a start on the Imperial Knights of House Mortan. They’ve got a nifty armour scheme where the main torso carapace is black whilst the shoulder and outer plates tend to be reds & yellows, all trimmed in gold.To that end last weekend I primed the weapons & main bodies black, whilst the armour plates were primed with Army Painter Leather Brown to provide a richer base for the red, yellow & gold.
Here’re the armour plates after a few coats of the colours:
And here’s where I called it an end for the weekend – Leadbelcher on the torso & weapons, touched up the body panels with Abbadon Black then where there is gold went over with a layer of Leather Brown in preperation. At the same time went and tidied up the leather brown on the trim of the armour plates. Next step is washes, but as we’re getting a visit by small folk next weekend (otherwise known as my niece & nephew) the hobby time will be taking a bit of a break 🙂
August 11, 2018 at 8:57 pm #1250964@dawfydd Knights looking great. Are you adding them to a force or starting a new one?
I would find The Simpson’s funny but it’s always just the same 3 episodes.
August 11, 2018 at 9:31 pm #1250965@dawfydd :
Those ‘big’ knights look cool.
The colour scheme kind of reminds me of ancient Roman units with its dark red and brass/gold trim.
It’s a bit dark&gloomy for my taste (but that’s just me), but definitely a great effect.August 11, 2018 at 9:39 pm #1250966@woldenspoons thanks man. At the moment they are forming another arm of my ever-expanding Imperial Crusade, in this iteration of 40k mainly comprised (so far) of Space Wolves but with some Custodes, SoS, Grey Knights and a small smattering of Deathwatch primed for painting (with Crimson Fists & Jungle Fighters further down the pipe).
August 11, 2018 at 9:48 pm #1250968@dawfydd Looks like one hellofa crusade. Good luck getting it all done!
August 11, 2018 at 10:33 pm #1250987After a bit of tweaking and with the help of a good source of names ( http://deron.meranda.us/data/ ) I’ve got results.
Looks pretty authentic, doesn’t it ?
(strange … initially the image was resized to monstrous size by the forum)
August 11, 2018 at 11:06 pm #1251000August 12, 2018 at 12:15 am #1251016Biggabums thought for the day: Never tell your Wife that you have completed your hobby pledge for the weekend early and youre stuck for something to do…. She found me something to do…. lots of something to do.
So now the loft is tidy…. or at least she thinks it is, she can’t get up the ladder to check and I bribed Matty to keep his mouth shut with a Freddo. The Bins and Re-cycling boxes are cleaned… well i squirted water over them with a hose, and the shed is tidy… I moved the rubbish from one end to the other and piled it up neatly.
Did manage to set up a table for our first Batman Game, which we will play tomorrow. Will post Pics, but won’t do a Bat Rep until i’m comfortable with the rules or we’ll be there all day 😀
@tuffyears Kill Team objectives look great. Really liking the Standard Bearer though. Good colour choice on the banner. Looks like your really getting the bug for Gaslands. You definately need a car like that for the M6.
@evilstu Wow you’ve given yourself plenty to do there mate. Quick question for you. Ive noticced that even though the weather has cooled here to a comfortable 23 degrees, when I put a wash on a Mini, it dries really quickly and doesnt seem to pool as well as it does when its cooler, it sort of dries evenly and darkens the whole model rather than in the recesses. Ive tried adding water or thinner, but it hasn’t made any difference to the problem just lightens the tone a bit. I just wondered if you had picked up any tips (especially with the heat you get down there)?
@dawfydd Wow mate thats one helluva Army there. Will look spectacular when its all painted up. The Knights are coming on superbly, youy have the house colour spot on. How do you get the lines between colours so neat, Masking Tape?
Those Space Wolves are making me feel nostalgic. Excellent.
@woldenspoons congratulations on the win. Pics are great.
@mage Yeah I hate painting yellow but found a better way of doing it than I was. Mix a 50-50 shade of Averland Sunset and And Army Painter Rust. Even watered down it only took 2 coats to get a nice even basecoat. Then a first stage highlight of Averland Sunset folowed by a final highlight of Yriel Yellow. The hair was just a red ink on yellow with a yellow drybrush highlight.
Well I did one Officer (Agent Ron with the Tazer) for Batman’s Crew, and I did the Policewoman as a Harley Quinn proxy for Matty (as she still hasnt turned up yet), and I did an Arkham Guard which rounds out Batmans Crew to five and comes in just below the 350 rep. Both the Bane and Joker crews come in smack on 350.
@limburger Yep another Space Above and Beyond fan here. You gotta use Kenny as a name… then if he dies in Battle you can shout “You killed Kenny!” or is that maybe a bit too much 😀
@osbad Welcome to the thread Sir. Very nice work on Johnny Alpha.
August 12, 2018 at 12:36 am #1251018@biggabums i know this sounds strange. But as i was painting the car. It was speeking to me. It wanted to be a squad car. I will take the pills now
August 12, 2018 at 1:25 am #1251023@tuffyears Oh yes, now that is what I call a Police Car. See that patroling the motorways and everybodies suddenly doing 70…
I’ve always said a car doesnt need to be fast, just heavily armed 😀
August 12, 2018 at 2:40 am #1251043@biggabum quick response re shading. Keep in mind it’s also the humidity that can impact on how stuff dries, not just heat. With regard to thinners, if I am using the Army Painter dip varnish I will usually add a little mineral turpentine (just a small amount) directly to the tin when I first open it to to help with the mixing and to thin it down slightly (I find the initial mix marginally too strong in pigment for my tastes but your mileage may vary…), I also leave the tin sitting in hot water for a few minutes before I open it, to warm the dip and help it mix well. I then stir for a few minutes to mix all the pigment that has settled on the bottom and dip or brush on as required. Once this has done you should usually go back over any minis a minute later and brush away any excess that has pooled as I understand it but I almost always neglect to do that stage in my enthusiasm to batch varnish 50+ models.. <_< Then it’s just a case of leaving for a full day before adding a matt coat to hide the glossyness. GIving the dip a full 24 hours to settle is critical as it keeps working/pulling back into the crevices.
For brush on washes I usually thin down with Vallejo Airbrush flow improver. Thins the base colour a little which reduces the colour tinting on the raised areas and helps stuff settle in the recesses.
On dry (ie low humidity) days the wash will have less time to settle and you will probably wind up with more surface discolouration – might need to thin down a little more than usual on days like this? If you are only washing a couple of minis at a time maybe just keep brushing on the raised areas to stop the wash settling there as much? Also, rehighlighting in the underlying base colour after the wash might help out too.
The main technique I use to avoid the problem is if I am going to hit a big project where I know I will be using washes I try to plan my paint/colour scheme so that the wash phase adds to what I am trying to achieve, rather than detract from it. That’s why a lot of my dungeon crawling adventurers suddenly started wearing greens, browns and beiges a few years ago – those tones take a brown ink wash really well.
Green and beige tones before and after an Army Painter Strong Tone (ie dark brown) dip varnish:
Before:
After:
before:
After:
You get the idea… Appreciate that this is not really a realistic proposition when tied to a particular artistic narrative or historical color scheme…
Bought the ingredients to try version 3 of this recipe the other week – I have a lot of terrain to shade and dropper bottles or small ink pots aren’t going to cut it 😛 Will keep you posted on the results when I get there..
August 12, 2018 at 5:40 am #1251059@evilstu thanks for that mate, I never thought to try flow improver. I have a feeling that should be enough as the heat here isnt as extreme as you get and certainly doesnt last long.
I’ve never used the Army Painter dips before, just the inks, but after seeing your before and after pics I might get a pot and see how I get on with it. So is it actually a Varnish? I usually use a Satin spray Varnish and then a coat of Anti-Shine (unless i want a glossy wet look effect), so if I use the dip would I still need the coat of Satin? (while I know of the dips, I know naff all about them or how to use them)
Cheers
