@limburger with a glass of wine. And yes they need. Due to the dry summer most nuts are very small or even empty.
October 6, 2018 at 9:23 pm #1281856LOL … you evil evil man.
//
Spending some time looking at the Warlord Games website.
Lots of lovely stuff to buy. 😀
Need paint too.October 7, 2018 at 12:44 am #1281964G’day all!
It’s the weekend again! Time to relax and enjoy.
1) Halloween is approaching. What are your thoughts on the event, either the commercial aspect or its historical origins?
I used to think similarly to @limburger
“Halloween is a purely commercial powered American tradtion that unfortunately is starting to grow over here as well.”
until my ex-wife’s mother heard me repeat that it was an American tradition and she pulled me up. As a native of Northern Ireland she educated my daughter and I that it is an Irish tradition that travelled to the U.S.
There was about six where my daughter and I would roam the local streets, stopping at houses that were decorated or had a light on. It is becoming more popular here in Australia.
These days everything is already so commercialised, so what’s one more event?
2) What is one hobby product or accessory that you thought was gimmicky or a waste of time up until the point where you actually owned one and discovered how useful it was?
I try to keep an open mind generally. I was sceptical of the Mold Line Remover, I’ve got a hobby knife and files, right? But I’ve seen enough “I was surprised at how effective it is” reviews on independent hobby websites to think that there might be something to them.
3) As humantity moves out to colonise space in generations to come do you think the idea of national identity or traditions will still be relevant or will they all fall by the wayside?
I think the idea of traditions will be just as important or even more important. Just as we have taken traditions from one continent to another as humans explored the unknown around the globe, we will take them into the stars. They give a sense of belonging, and remind us of our roots, which is necessary (I feel) for our psychological well-being. So while brave explorers will be out there flying directly into the face of the unknown they’ll most likely still enact some of the old traditions. It’ll remind them that they aren’t alone, they’ve got a little piece of home with them.
National identity though… I feel that it’d take an extraordinary event to get humans to truly set aside national identity. Planetary crisis? Solid evidence of alien intelligence? Domination by a single culture to form a planetwide government?
There won’t too much hobby from me this week: I’m taking a week of work to spend with my daughter during the school holidays. I would like to try and get a game of Goblin Quest with her, see if RPG’s are something she might enjoy.
I may get a chance to hit my Orcs with the Army Painter spray I picked up last week. Near constant rain for the last three days meant that conditions were not suitable to do it earlier.
October 7, 2018 at 1:12 am #1281967Hey guys,
Busy day with my sons custody visit and having his birthday party. I also had a d&d session while he was asleep and did some painting when I got home. Back to work tomorrow with a night shift (I will divvy out points for the previous weekender then, when I have free time).
My pledge:
Complete 2x Citadel Woods (2x bases and 6x trees in total)
Complete 2x AoS Objective Markers
Attempt to complte my Temple of Skulls (1x large oop terrain kit)
Work on my albionnicans (while I’d like to say ‘finish them all’, I do have a lot of other things to do. 7x models)
Post pictures of other finished work from the week
Work on Star Wars Legion1) Grocery store sales and themed events in online games are alerting me to the fact that Halloween is approaching. What are your thoughts on the event, either the commercial aspect or its historical origins?
I like Halloween. Sometimes Im working. Its great to go trick or treat when I have my son for it, its fun to go on a night out in costume, to do Halloween themed gaming, have the decorations up, and the general feel of the season. I don’t like people using it as an excuse for poor/lazy/slutty costumes (both men and women here), or certain people doing antisocial/violent/vandalism type stuff. I guess I prefer the more pure, innocent, fun, kid friendly side of it. I do not mind the commercial aspect.
As for the traditions every culture seems to have one. If you look back at Ireland far enough it celebrates the Celtic new year (also the harvest). So, it is valid.
Fond memories I have are taking my son up a cold neighbourhood with his friend going house to house getting stuff in his cute little paw patrol outfit. I also have my own fond childhood memories of trick or treating and costumes.
One year for Halloween I ended up in hospital getting my Appendix out and missing the little event they did in the ward when I feel asleep.
Also in recent years I wore a subzero costume on a night out. We went to a house party and pub, nobody seemed to be too interested in any of the groups costumes. We then went to a nightclub and it was a different story. Lots of people dug the subzero outfit. At one point I walked passed two guys who already had a few drinks. They raised an eyebrow and then recognised the costume. One came right up into my face, crossed his arms and yelled MORTAL KOMBAT
2) What is one hobby product or accessory that you thought was gimmicky or a waste of time up until the point where you actually owned one and discovered how useful it was?
Army Painter Varnish. I thought people spending the effort dipping their models into the varnish and shaking it to dry off was crap. Even when I saw the results and liked it to a degree, it still seemed scammy to me that once you reached a certain point you could not longer dip.
Then a slightly different version came out in dropper bottles: it is now a core pillar in the foundation of my painting with everything. Soft tone for gold, skin and browns, strong tone for reds, other browns and dirty metals and dark tone for metal. It is a heavens-send.
3) As humantity moves out to colonise space in generations to come do you think the idea of national identity or traditions will still be relevant or will they all fall by the wayside?
I think they will still remain relevant but gloabalisation will continue. Take modern european architecture in aesthetics compared to the 1990s, 1980s, 1970s and going back 100 to 200 years; a large amount of creative expression, cultural identity and individualism has gone by the wayside. A lot of European cities in different countries can be very ‘same-ey’ in parts. Style, look, sentiment and sense of self fall by the wayside due to efficiency, profit, budgets and saving money.
More from me tomorrow!
Also a shameless plug of my blog

Gonna take proper pictures of my completed terrain tomorrow and during the week while I have a chance. Gotta get some work on my orcs done too
October 7, 2018 at 1:32 am #1281985@torros project bookmarked – keen to see how you get along. Do you have a size for the project envisaged or are you just going to see where it takes you? 10 points.
@woldenspoons I do like the idea of loading excited little people up with a bunch of confectionary, but the problem here in Australia (Southern hemisphere so late Spring) is that with Halloween being late October and daylight saving commencing at the start of the month that it doesn’t get dark until well after 8, by which time most of the little people are in bed, so it’s not particularly atmospheric for the door-knockers… We could be hopeful and maybe suggest that an increase in the quantity of resources available from mining asteroids and remote planets means we would all play a little nicer together due to it being a time of plenty? Looking forward to pics of the KT terrain if you can manage it. 30 points for responses and 5 more for RHCP 🙂
@limburger yes from my understanding some of the original stories/lore around Saint Nicholas are pretty dark yo begin with; probably a product of the times which they came from. I do love that poster though. Yes having seen the figure painting setup that @sundancer has I have been considering something similar. I did back a KS for a cork miniature holder a while back but haven’t used it yet – U seem to be in a bit of a rut of batch/chain painting rather than doing anything for more of a display piece. I really should mix things up a little as I do quite enjoy taking some time painting slowly. Is there anything in particular you are painting up at the moment? Yes the Warlord store is a tempting/potentially expensive but still awesome place to visit. I’m telling myself I don’t need to start a French Indian war project until I get some other stuff finished. Are you looking at the Bolt Action goodies after the bootcamp? 40 points for responses.
@querion hope you enjoyed your holiday 🙂 Wow, those rail dioramas are just next level good – so much detail! Model rail enthusiasts always seem to be on their A-game, so many different techniques and styles used and everything looks photo-realistic. inspiring stuff, thanks for sharing 🙂 It appears shall have to up my game for tabletop scenery by a long ways… Did the tables inspire you with regard to considering some terrain ideas? Miniature grips seem to be a popular response – I may need to have another look at the GW one. Yes, Australian beer companies spend a lot of money on marketing, but that was one of the more memorable ones… This was my favourite one form many many years ago, low budget and a simple idea …
20 points for the photos, 10 for tunes and 40 for question responses and feedback.
@sundancer hope you are pulling up OK by now 🙂 That’s some nice work on the feeding station – do you do woodwork professionally or is this just more of a hobby for you? 25 points for work and responses because carpentry is a good thing 🙂
@rayzryr Yes I view the historical roots and the current Halloween as different things, but both a part of the whole concept if that makes sense? Probably not, but still… Yes I saw the mold line remover as well and thought it seemed a bit frivolous, but if the reviews are positive maybe there is something to it? hadn’t considered the importance of maintaining traditions forma psychological perspective, especially when delving headlong into the unknown- valid point. Enjoy the time off with your daughter 🙂 Yes the rain has been quite epic in parts – we’ve only caught a little of it here but other areas need it more than us so that’s OK. 30 points for responses.
@mage nice to hear you are building up a tradition around halloween with your son 🙂 The Sub Zero costume does sound like a clever one – a nice balance between a recognisable detailed costume idea and having to spend 6 months building something to wear…. Re the AP dip I find that the life of the tins can be extended by thinning down/topping up with turpentine, brushing on or just pouring into another tin to top up. But yes, the dropper bottles are good and don’t have the varnish smell so can be used indoors. hadn’t considered architecture – another one to think about moving forward as building design would need to be based on environmental factors – would be interesting to see if any localised themes became recognisable or even if some of the aesthetics from present day were maintained in the future. Project bookmarked, will check it out shortly. Albionnicans look great, nice work on the bases too – enough differentiation to create visual interest without it being overly distracting or taking away form the rest of the model. Are you going to work your Stormtroopers up to white from the red base or are you planning an alternate color scheme? 30 points for responses and 15 for completed and progress pics.
October 7, 2018 at 1:36 am #1281986They will be Magna Troopers, they will stay red and there are bad links in the log
October 7, 2018 at 2:54 am #1282009Just saw this – amazed at the planning and forethought involved:
October 7, 2018 at 6:00 am #1282035Yay. Finally got a game in of Kill Team. I was obsessed before now I’m hooked.
Played my friend Ed with his Death Watch so I was a little concerned to begin with as they are the current internet darlings. He had six marines, armed to the teeth and full of tricks. I had nothing but smelly mutants, bugs and yes, I had a Hulk.
He set up for the TM turn one charge. I knew this so set up in trap formation, cheap bugs at the front ready to counter charge. What actually happened though was I won the initiative for the first turn and just charged his forward advanced veteran with a bunch of bugs and my Hulk. On the other flank I squeezed forward cover to cover trying to avoid his guns. One fly whizzing up onto the walkways above.
His shooting took out my veteran mutant but he was a little unlucky otherwise. Then in the combat phase all my tiny little guys pattered off his armour before my big guy grabbed him and ripped him in two. A nice consolidate move took one of my bugs straight into his white scar he had moved up to support.
Again I won initiative for turn two and swamped the white scar with my left flank assault bugs and Hulk. Finally used command points and spawned another bug blocking his escape routes. This time he retreated with his marines further back finally learning his lesson.
His shooting killed my scout mutant and put a flesh wound on my flies but they ignore them so no other effect. In combat it was the same outcome leaving the swarm to pile forward to his two retreating marines.
Turn three and I get the initiative again. Pretty unlucky for Ed but he took it like a champ. This time I threw my flies at both of his marines, they easily survived the overwatch fire and Ed was stuck in combat. The swarm charged in on both guys and the Hulk charged both pushing bugs, flies and anything else out of his way to reach them. Ed’s sniper and heavy took pot shots at a glitchling but something made their guns malfunction and they couldn’t hit him. Just before combat started Ed realised he’d left the iron on, had a chicken in the oven and he had a plane to catch ?. Major win to me and once again it looked my opponent was going to quit the game but luckily he just swapped forces. (It never occurred to him that the force wasn’t the problem).
Luckily I took pictures and these include my scenery as well so enjoy!
October 7, 2018 at 7:31 am #1282062@mage yeah cool sorry I caught that later reading up on the project – Will look really cool and should provide a coherent look to the force alter on if you decide to include some imperial guards? 10 points (mainly for the project log 🙂 )
@woldenspoons glad you got a game in. Nice batRep 🙂 and the terrain does look great. It’s nice that each of those boxes pretty much has enough terrain to cover the board and keep things fairly interesting. 30 points for pics and Batrep.
Just watched the Weekender. Sigh… Can someone please calmly and patiently explain to me that I don’t need to commit to scratch building a space hulk for Kill Team in the next 8 weeks?… Grumble.. Mutter… Stupid Hobby challenges aligning with things I was already planning to do later on and suckering me in…
October 7, 2018 at 8:25 am #1282074@evilstu Just going with the flow at the moment. We still haven’t decided on base sizes at the minute but 60×40 is looking favourite at the moment. As Unthinkable I mentioned in the project the ruleset isn’t released until next year so still have a bit of time
@woldenspoons Nice looking table and battle report. A few friends are looking into kill team as it reminds them of the original Rogue Trader
October 7, 2018 at 12:12 pm #1282184Over here Halloween lacks any sort of cultural background. At best there’s going to church.
So no trick or treat history, although in some regions Saint Martin’s has a similar tradition, but not with costumes AFAIK.As such it is like the recent trend for ‘Octoberfest’ parties. It lacks the soul that these things have in other countries and becomes an excuse to drink lots of beer for no reason at all. I can drink beer all year anyway (if I liked that stuff that is) so *meh* and I’m no fun with alcohol anyway.
Besides … I already got an excuse to dress up (Carnaval) , but unlike Halloween that’s more focused on fun and less on ‘scary’ stuff. I guess not being a fan of horror isn’t helping. LOL
I’ve already filled my shopping cart in the warlord webstore … now all I need to do is wait for my voucher to arrive by mail.
I’m also feeling tempted to buy Orky stuff this month for some reason (I blame @mage and GW ;-)).I read about that Banksy auction thing. LOL I do wonder if they were in on it, because you’d think they’d notice the weight of the piece and the fact that it needed power …
The people with more money than sense need to be pranked like that. Next time he should have it burn so it becomes really impossible to restore. It really is like the fairy tale about the Emperors’ new clothes. It also reminds me of a story where drawings by monkeys/children had been placed in a gallery and all the critics thought they were master pieces. That and artists claiming a peanut butter floor as ‘art’ to me mean that I’ve got zero respect for artists and critics. I do however dig the art used in games. That kind of stuff feels like it is more worth preserving than any of the so called ‘modern art’ that is in museums.
This is the limited edition rulebook that was part of the blood&plunder kickstarter :
That’s 2-3 cm thick with nice heavy paper. It feels like a book from the era.
And the metal corners make it look great. Soo shiny … 😀I can’t wait to see what these guys will do in their iron&oak kickstarter.
