Vikings are always good. Huge, huge interest from both civilisations on the rest of Europe. Plenty of Vikins settled in Ireland too, and Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland is originally a Viking settlement. I really need to rewatch and finish what I have not seen of the Vikings TV show.
You cannot argue with Classic Harley.
@evilstu <50 points>
I believe he is the one from the Arkham Computer games from the last few years.
I love heavy narrative. Havent seen the playthroughs, I will have to check it out. How is it narrative? Also, that is not a bad way to play an Empire Army. Always looks cool too. I tore apart such an army at a tournament with a Great Unclean One getting off the charge on something and then smashing into the flank of an army all in one row. It was GLORIOUS.
You have quite an amount of 40k minis to get through but I think the Kill Team starter and Dark Imperium are fine choices. That Armageddon Idea you have is intriguing… I may do that… But Armageddon works as a setting, either way!
I see the Death Guard are corrupting a Feudal World.
Can I get a close up of the French historicals? I cannot tell what they are from the pic.
Kill Team looks good.
Interesting conversation and nice hobby stuff. Points above.
August 5, 2018 at 1:18 am #1246402Energy levels are flagging guys so doing half of page 2 for now.
@limburger <10 points>
Big indeed! Must be….
Bad name generators are just bad. You could google name generators, theres loads for d and d that may or may not help. It would be hobby, yes, adding that idea as a project.
Get grub.
I think its Panzerfaust, the game that you describe?
@biggabum <10 points>
Arkham Asylum is one of the video games. An acclaimed series, too.
10 points for progressing the conversation.
August 5, 2018 at 3:05 am #1246429Been a busy weekend as I had to work Saturday , not my usual day so its thrown me totally off my schedule . Answers to the questions – 1. Fav historical period is WW 2 because of all the cool tanks that were used on all sides in the conflict . I have a lot of Bolt Action vehicles ( about 60 ) and probably 250 troops ( 100 Russians , 100 Germans , 30 odd Japanese and the rest Brits / Canadians / Polish ) Now the thing is I’ve never felt the urge to play , I would rather build and kit bash vehicles and figures . There is a group locally that plays , but although I sit in a watch now and again , I usually get involved by building scenery ( barb wire fences , hedge hogs ,fox hole , beach obstacles , etc ) for the guys . Its a win /win IMO . My second fav historical era would involve Vikings , there is a few here who play Saga , and if I ever get my shit together I should build and paint up a raiding party or two .
2. Sci Fi all the way . Come on , Terminator , Aliens , Star Trek , Star Wars , whats not to love ? Also partial to the Blade and Underworld movies , so Vampires , are they fantasy or Sci Fi ?
3. I don’t get Twitter , Facebook and all that other stuff where you ” follow ” someone and read about them buying a Coke and eating a sandwich and all the other crap people want to share . Maybe its an age thing but it seems really dumb to me .
4.Vallejo Paint has started to replace all the other various types I have , some going back to 70s Humbols . And for some reason 70s Humbrols are still good in the tin and the new stuff you buy seems to go bad in about 4 months , wtf ? So I am slowly replacing all colors with Vallejo when possible , the Vallejo leaflet dosen’t show matches for all paint brands and colors yet but with every new Vallejo line the list gets shorter . A color I really like is 70.914 Green Ochre which despite its name is a light sand/yellow color , a perfect match IMO for Humbrol matt 94 Brown Yellow a color I’ve used for years on my German tanks .
5. I’m going to think some more about this question
I’ve had a couple of weeks of lousy builds and paint jobs . Things just haven’t gone right , from tipping over a bottle of paint on a just finished kit , to sendinng pieces flying across the work bench while trying to cut them off the sprue . And of course the old drop a tiny piece on the floor , roll your chair back and crush it trick , one of those weeks . So , I’ve dug out a few things that I started a while ago . A couple of Space Marine Mice from Reaper , a few winter Russians I’m turning into Poles with some metal heads I ordered from some place in Russia and some resin bits I’ve made myself , as well I’ve got a couple of seated Germans to finish that should end up perched on a knocked out Russian tank , photos for the home front kind of diorama

@dawfydd <40 points>
Glad you like the questions. I wanted to mix it up.
Historical was never really my thing either but as per the above posts of mine, I am attempted to do like a Roman or Greek army and add fantastical stuff to it… K47 is something I have, also (it is so cool).
Were Mierce Miniatures connected to Maelstrom Games? Also, is Darklands expensive? Interesting sounding factions. I really like the sounds of the Atlantean Bronze Automatons.
That’s a whole lot of writing and readers.
I remember Borders. As for Harry Potter it was ok, I never got into it like Tolkien, but we are all a nerdy fan for something. I do like the Fantastic Beasts movie though.
I love the army painter tone paints in the dropper bottles.
Tom Baker narration? Hostile Waters sounds great. Ill check it now. Hm. Interesting! Graphics are quite dated though but was from the early 2000s.
Cool pose on the Knights.
@tuffyears <20 points>
Red always works as a bold spot colour, imho. I agree with @aa27cromwell and @biggabum
Execution is not too red at all and looks well. 20 points for Day 1 Progress on the Kill Team.
@a27cromwell <10 points>
Valid point on wearing a red hat in a warzone. Points awarded.
This Batman game has turned you into a painting machine, eh? 25 points for the larger Titan Clown.
@dawfydd <20 points>
That is a buttload of stuff you primed. Are you sure you aren’t off your face from the primer fumes? 15 points, that’s a lot you did.
House Mortan is a fine choice. 5 points.

I know there are more replies on page 3, but time to get up and have breakfast. Laters, party people
August 5, 2018 at 10:37 am #1246592August 5, 2018 at 11:27 am #1246644@tuffyears Guard Kill Team is coming along really well. Nice pick with the red beret’s – Contrast suits the models nicely, and the colours you have gone for look really good. Hope you enjoy the show and survive the public transport OK…
@limburger I used to just use phone books for random names back in the day… that Online generator does look handy. Not sure to go about pronouncing some of the names for the more esoteric races…
@biggabum castle walls are printed – took some time to churn that lot out but got there eventually… The Killing Joke was a Batman story arc with some fairly major plot development. no spoilers but you can look it up on the interwebs if you are curious 🙂 Really nice work on the Tuitan – has a huge sense of momentum and gravity about the model.
@dawfydd look after yourself 🙁 One thing I will give 40k as far as the Sci Fi curve goes is that humanity did peakand get everything sorted, and then fell and are trying to drag themselves forward once more. If you can get past the grimdark then it is an interesting proposition. Sort of like the Battletech universe during the 4th succession war, only with the volume turned way up 🙂 I don’t really get Harry Potter either – think I’m just the wrong age for it. Apparently there is a stage show based on the IP on in melbourne – tickets were sold out for 6 months after a 3 days on sale, so someone must enjoy the franchise. I like the look of your Knight, I’m tempted to pick up a copy of the box set myself. Wow, so much priming…
@a27cromwell that’s a massive tonne of BA! And don’t stress re not feeling the need to play – there’s more than one way to hobby 🙂 I tool a hobby break of about 5 years a while back – all my Vallejo paints were fine when I pulled them from storage, all toe non-dropper bottle ones form other manufacturers I had to throw out. So needless to say I’m a fan even if only from that perspective.
@torros great BatRep – No idea about the rules set but the narrative and humorous write-up was very entertaining. Some really nice armies too – very well painted.
@mage the playthroughs for Sharp Practice are pretty entertaining. I’m hoping that the guys get to film a few more at some stage – they are all like watching a movie rather than a game. Ah yes, Empire armies… They always struggled against Nurgle… I got so sick of failing leadership tests and being unable to charge my opponents when I needed to that I went and bought a Slaanesh army just so it would all be immune to psychology. It was a stupidly quick army to play – mounted Daemonettes in 6th ed were light cavalry with a 10 inch base move, meaning they could be 20 inches down your opponents flank and ready to charge after their first turn. I took 2 blocks of those, a bunch of warhounds for screening, 2 blocks of knights, 2 chariots, a couple of spawn and a few really big infantry blocks for a bit of crunchy hitting power. There was no magic, psychology tests or shooting with that army, so I only had to do anything in 2 of the 5 game phases, moving (right up close and personal at the end of turn 1, charges away on turn 2 or 3 at the latest..) and combat (whee everything went terribly wrong and they all got cut to ribbons 😛 ) . Great fun.
I did snap a pic of the historicals but really there isn’t much to see – only a few token base colours on here and there. A mix of Perry and Warlord. 24 Voltigeurs (light infantry – the ones with the green shoulder patches), 12 skirmishing Voltigeurs (with the blue basecoat) and 96 regulars. Overkill for Sharp Practice quantity wise but will keep churning them out for use in mass battle games later on. Going to wash/AP dip the whole lot as I’m keen to get them on the tabletop fairly quickly.
August 5, 2018 at 11:30 am #1246645August 5, 2018 at 11:46 am #1246664Progress for the weekend – finished priming the Plague Marines and got the Barbican sections glued, greenstuffed and mostly printed (finished all my black primer as well…)
Also got 100+ goblins based (I don’t know why I thought that would be a quick job – even at 1 minute per goblin that was always going to take nearly 2 hours…)
Will take a few shots of the Historicals when there is something worthwhile to show. Finally, a few test pieces for Kill Team Terrain. Printed 2 sections each of which took a few hours (3 for the door, 5 for the corner). So it looks like it will be slow going. Also, the chapel seems to be scaled for a primarch… Will move across to some more standardised, prefabricated looking terrain to bulk things up a little once I have a few more bits of scatter sorted.
August 5, 2018 at 11:57 am #1246665@tuffyears were you still looking for SAS minis? I was looking on the Anvil Industries design your own mini bit to try and get some proxy Steel Legion and found you can make a reasonable looking SAS trooper (late 80’s at least – sorry I don’t really know what their kit looked like for the embassy siege in 1980…

Try the following: Head = SAS Gas Mask; Torso = Load Vest; Legs = PMC; Arms = Fatigue; Weapon = MP5. The pose looks a little awkward but that is just the 3d model to see what the various parts look like… Anyhow, could be worth investigating if you have’t already sourced a solution 🙂
August 5, 2018 at 12:04 pm #1246667time to catch up (and complain about the infernal heat 😉 )
@mage : panzerfaust … yes that’s the one.
I know stuff exists on the internet. Google already got me several links, but I want to roll my own.
When I made my bot editor for Unreal Tournament I used a concept known as ‘Markov chains’.It creates the sort of predictable random patterns that is perfect for procedural generating of content.

(1) Favourite historical genre for wargaming, and if you don’t, and I pushed you for an answer, what would it be?
I like too much already, so it is hard to pick a winner.
There’s WW1 which had the excellent Red Baron flight simulator. Other aces would challenge you to duels and everyone was still learning how not to die five minutes after getting up in the air.Then we’ve got WW2 … spitfires, Stukas and the infamous IL2 Sturmovik. I really miss that all games are arcade shooters instead of good simulators.
Back to tabletop I’d say WW2 in part because there is a ton of local history. And as short as our initial start of the war was the fact that we did better than people say was awesome.
The wild west aka the good, the bad & the ugly. It’s probably best for a roleplaying game and not so much a wargame setting.
Top tip : the computer game ‘Hard West’https://www.gog.com/game/hard_west
(2) Science fiction or Fantasy, and why? This could be movie, RPG, board game, computer game or tabletop related. You decide.
I’d side with Science Fiction, because of Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Jack Vance and others.
I’ve been trying to read William Gibsons’ novels, but it hasn’t been easy and I kind of doubt his novels make sense in Dutch because there simply are too many concepts that don’t translate to any other language.(3) What mainstream, acclaimed thing have you never gotten into or liked?
Avatar aka Pocahontas in space.
Harry Potter … I never read the books, but I’ve seen a few of the movies. They’re interesting, but not world shattering by any means.Reality tv … any format.
The person who invented that should have mean things done to him, because this ultra cheap tv format pretty much killed what was left of tv.Pokemon and the related copycats/clones of kids collecting ‘monsters’/creatures/things and fighting in duels. Especially the duels never make any sense.
Never mind the eternal failure that is Ash Ketchup (or whatever his name is). One really has to wonder how Team Rockit fails to beat this kid when he rarely ever wins any of his games.CCG’s like “Magic the gathering” … I think the concept is unfair for anyone with a mere casual interest in the game, because anyone with enough time/money can create a deck that is unbeatable by whatever random cards are in your starter set.
It forces you to either gamble or pay way too much for bits of card based on nothing more than perceived power/usefulness and rarity. It feels like playing poker where my opponent always gets all 4 aces and I only ever get a pair of 3’s …(4) What brand and colour of paint are you fond of using lately?
I have only had two brands : Citadel/GW and Armypainter. The latter has been pretty good, because I do like the tiny dropper bottles.(5) Name something random and obscure related to gaming you like and feel is under appreciated. It could be a computer game, little known company, or anything that takes your fancy.

I don’t really do any of that but naval battles from WWI should be interesting.
(2)
SciFi just because it’s achievable… and every sufficient evolved tech is perceived as magic 😉
(3)
Game of Thrones the TV Series. It’s just not my cup of coffee
(4)
Army Painter Uniform grey…. works wonders on the Star Wars Legion AT-ST XD
