Hey @all just checking in briefly before disappearing to bed.

@biggabum indeed. Vanilla Ice never gets old 😛 Harley in hand yet?

@mage base coated joker is coming along nicely.  Re the wraiths how bright were you looking at taking them? Are you thinking of shading the base colour up towards white or using a blue-green or even a yellow? I had some success doing an overbrush with the GW verdigreen technical paint (Sorry don’t remember the name – was it nihilakh oxide?). Don’t know if it would work with these ones – for some reason taking the highlight up towards more of a yellow seems like it could be fun. Or terribly frustrating and tedious? Sorry I get those two mixed up all the time… Liking your son’s hobby project – classic Red vs blue 🙂

@commodorerob sounds a convincing argument 🙂 Especially as half my X-wing stuff is still in the shrink wrap… Plus I do like Warlord as a company, which counts for something…

@sundancer damn, remember when that was released… now I feel old too…  Then again I remember being excited when PE’s Apocalypse ’91 was going to be released too, so really showing my age… Regrettably my knowledge of Pratchett extends only as far as Good Omens and Wee Free Men. My Girlfriend is fluent though…

@torros nice to hear that cinema is a globally supported industry. I suppose the spectacular local scenery doesn’t really hurt… I know where you are coming from on automatic price comparisons for minis – I mentally work in a 25 to 50% gross up for intellectual property and still end up coming up short half the time…

@woldenspoons post away! We are easily amused by fascinating shapes and simple colours ;-P Seriously though it’s all about the journey here. Happy to see progress shots, even it it’s just pulling the shrink wrap off of your latest acquisition.

@tuffyears love the cars! And the work on the windscreens, very nice stuff.

@dawfydd hope work settles down for you. Also hope the monitor corrects itself. have you tried pulling out and reinstalling the video card? Mine tends to get out of alignment when my PC gets hot (which might be topical for a lot of northern hemisphere thread participants).

@limburger OK 40 degrees does count as properly hot, especially if you are not used to it. Is the temperature dipping in the evening? I know on nights where it doesn’t cool below say the mid thirties sleep can be a real killer. If that happens, pro tip form someone who lives through it every summer – get some plastic water bottles, fill them mostly full and put them in your freezer in the morning. When you retire for the evening take them out, wrap a tea towel around them and put them in the bed – think a hot water bottle in reverse. Also a cheap fan will work wonders 🙂

@a27cromwell never tried to build in 1/48 – Is that the scale that dragon kits come in? Ever given that scale a shot? I used to do either 1/35 or 1/72 as a kid (with limited success), haven’t finished a model kit in ages…

OK going to retire with the Astra Miliatrum codex and try to get inspiration levels up for Kill Team tinkering. Still plugging away at terrain, will post a shot tomorrow (putting camera near my keys so I won’t forget tomorrow morning…).

Evilstu ,  1/48 is more popular  aircraft scale ( 1 inch to 48 { 4 feet } )   than tank scale , but its also a  rail road scale . Real easy to bash out some scratch buildings and stuff when its an inch to 4 ft . So back in the late 60s , companies started making vehicle and tank kits . And like all early models ( lets say pre 80s ) the idea of scale was fluid ( like 28mm true vs heroic ) . But you could have cool train layouts or dioramas tying together an airfield , vehicles and a train .   The go to 1/48 tank kits now adays are Tamiya and Hobby Boss , with a few single kits amoungst various other companies . IRC Hobby Boss kits ( KV I s / T-34s ) have interiors , hard to see through the hatches but awesome if your kit bashing wrecks . Tamiya has maybe 40 kits in their line , everything from your BMW bike with side car to Sturm Tiger , and a new  Churchill Croc , as well as some troop sets . Top – Tamiya 1/48 Firefly / bottom – Bolt Action 1/56 M4 Sherman

    IMG_0208

Linburger , OK , so no vehicles , well you could always build a few to use as scenery  or objectives . Think of the scene in Band of Brothers when they attacked the Artillery position , You could use artillery kits as scenery to make that mission much more epic than just attacking a tench .  Plus you could even use a 1/48 scale plan as a downed fighter for a rescue the pilot mission .

@evilstu nah no sign of her yet. If she doesn’t come in time for our first game, I have a spare Gotham Policewoman i’ll paint up and use that as a proxy and print off Harley’s stat card. You know, Harley helps Joker commit the crime he’s planning by posing as a Policewoman.

We’re not used to this heat in the UK, usually rain and thunderstorms break up the heat. I  got a couple of Air Conditioners for the wife (best swap ever) 😀 Well she thinks they’re for her, so I got thoughtfull husband points, they’re actually for my pet Chinchilla…. *** Matty if you read this and tell Mum what I said you’ll spend the rest of the summer mowing the lawn. ***

@a27cromwell so do you consider that 1/48 would be a more accurate scale for tanks in 28mm mini games? They do look more accurate in the pic of the firefly. I’ve noticed the tank commanders that come with the Warlord tanks do seem a tad smaller than the 28mm guys.

(Sorry if you have already said this in the thread)

@a27cromwell That Firefly is EXACTLY the tank model I am looking for for The Walking Dead. Tamiya 1/48 scale? I’ll look into it.

@mage : that figure holder is real nice. I got one too.

@a27cromwell : there is at least one resin vehicle as an objective/cover terrain piece.
I’ll know more tomorrow after I pick up the package from a pickup point.
I did more than a few 1:35 scale military models when I was a kid. I never painted them, because the standard model paint was enamel (nasty stuff, required the use of chemical thinner). Tamiya did have a range of acrylic paints but the smell was equally awfull. Wargamers have got it real easy these days.

It kind of sucks that there aren’t any model shops left nearby. I used to love just walking in and looking at the stuff.
We used to have one in a town nearby run by twin brothers, which had a ton of diorama stuff (‘Verlinden Productions’ … expensive as heck, but incredible detail) as well as pretty much any thing you could imagine.  Good times …

@biggabum : scale models tend to have a lot more detail (and they’re also quite fragile) when compared to the average wargaming kit I’ve seen so far.  They’re also far more intricate to build, but worth every minute if you spend time on them.

Linburger , I think its up to personal choice . Although 1/48 tanks look good with some of the BA plastics , if you have Perrys’ or Black Tree , Empress , etc , it can be hit and miss . While 1/48 kits are more detailed  than most BA plastics , if you know a bit about the tank your building and have a little bit of skill and a decent spares box , you can build fantastic models . Rubicon , which is a newer 1/56 -28mm  plastic model company has some very well detailed tank and half track kits , they have also branched out into plastic crew sets , anti tank guns , pewter crew kits and resin personalities ( Patton / Monty , etc ) and some vehicle stowage .  My favorite kits built out of the box  are my Rubicon ones although their tracks aren’t the best detailed , but I can live with that. My fav BA kits are the Pzr III , KV I/II and JS III  and I did a lot of detail work on them . If I had known about Rubicon sooner I would have bought their T-34s ( I have 9 Ba T-34s ) as well as their Pzr IV ( I have 7 BA IVs ) . Crew figures are hit and miss with the BA kits having a variety of sizes . Although Rubicon didn’t have crew in the beginning , or even all crew hatches open , they now supply crew ( some kits like the M-10 tank destroyer you get both US and Brit heads ) , and hatches can be built open .  Example Rubicon SU-122 / 85 . This kit can be built as a SU-122 howitzer or SU-85 tank destroyer , you get all the parts for both upper hulls , by putting it together carefully you can swap them out giving you 2 vehicles for the price of one . Here’s two of my threeSU - 122

As well Rubicon have a few kits which allow you to build ONE of several variants , for example the Stug III has 3 different roof layouts , 2 different machine gun mounts , gun mantlets , 3 – 75mm gun barrels and a 105mm howitzer . And the Tiger I gives you regular rubber or steel wheels as well as various bibs and bobs so you can build an early / mid / or late Tiger I . As I have BA late Tiger I built mine as an early , sort of like the Bovington TigerTiger 1 early b

Sorry , hard to stop talking about tanks

One last comment on 1/56 figures if I may , I had go and find some to photograph . BA / Italeri German Commanders Left to right – Pzr III , Pzr IV , Tiger I,IMG_20180701_123021 Tiger II

German troops : blue – Bolt Action , green Tamiya 1/48, red RubiconIMG_20180809_184840854_LI

Brit tank commanders : orange BA / Italeri Churchill commander , blue , BA Brit infantry conversion , green 1/48 TamiyaIMG_20180809_184527378_LI

And don’t forget all the kit will be sized to match the figures . So although the packs might work , its a canvas bag it could be stuffed to bursting or almost empty , things  like water bottles , rifles and helmets will look out of place . Ba blue , Tamiya 1/48 greenIMG_20180809_184717940_LI When I use Tamiya’s figures , I tend to cut a few mm out of their legs to bring their standing height down . We all know guys who weigh in at 230 ponds and guys the same size who tip the scales at 150 , but we know very few guys , besides Gerry , who are over 7 feet tall
