Hey guys welcome to the hobby weekender! Lets go two for two with a copy and paste.
As for the music in the title, my son finished his last year in preschool today. Its been a long day on the road, dealing with his energy when we got home and a struggle for bed time.
For those of you not familiar with this thread format; it is a virtual hangout to post, chat, and interact on a deeper level than a ‘show and tell’ thread. First we make a pledge as to what we will do this weekend, I shoot up some questions for people to answer to stimulate conversation, we throw up links to music videos, and I dole out points to decide a winner of the thread at the end of the week.
There are some rules: don’t be a jerk. That’s the main one. If you do not like the format, the style or idea, then please don’t post. Participate! This is an inclusive thread moving on from the weirdness that went on in the past. No swearing, keep things politically correct, no religion, politics or wuss rock. I think that some up most of it. Ill stick to the normal format as I imagine I will be relatively busy with this weekend.
Have fun!
*Questions to follow
June 1, 2018 at 11:37 pm #1197149(1) Have you ever played dungeons and dragons? If not, why? If so, tell us what you like about it.
(2) Recommend me a podcast
(3) What sequel to a movie have you preferred over the previous instalment.
(4) What do you find irritating about a youtube video or podcast that covers a subject you like? Stereotypical nerd obnoxiousness, pacing, camera focus, or poor editing/syntax/diction/dictation
(5) Omelette of choice.June 2, 2018 at 12:08 am #1197200Hi guys n gals.
Another weekend another pledge…. just depends on the postman as to what it is.
If my Wild West Exodus Hex Beasts arrive tomorrow morning my pledge will be to paint them up, If they dont I guess Me and Matty will play a game of something…. probably Malifaux or maybe Blood Bowl.
annnnd to the questions:
1) No, never played it. The reason? Well there’s a couple really but the main one is I don’t know anybody who either plays or has an interest on RPG’s and I’m guessing Solo play isnt quite as much fun.
2) I hate to admit it but i’m not entirely sure what a Podcast is.
3) Mmmm theres a few… Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Spiderman 2 (Tobey Maguire version with Doc Ock).
4) Mmmm, I suppose some of the most irritating ones are the ones that are way too long and you end up watching an hour (i’m exagerating) of waffle before they actually get around to the reason you decided to watch the video in the first place. There’s preamble and there’s “What the hell has The Last Jedi got to do with Snail Racing?”
5) Bacon Mushroom and Cheese….
June 2, 2018 at 7:12 am #1197524My weekend hobby pledge is to get moving on my Dropzone Terrain project which has been sitting ready to go for a couple of weeks
1) I have played D&D, and what I like about it is the freedom it gives players to shape a story. I don’t play as often as I’d like as its hard to get commitment out of people. Mostly I’ve played one-shots, with two campaigns that lasted a few sessions.
2) The D6 Generation are my favourite podcast – they publish every two weeks ish and have been going 10 years. They play and review tons of games from board games and card games to a lot of different wargames. There are two regular hosts and they have a format where there is a rotating guest host/interviewee each show. They have a lot of game designers and publishers on over the years.
3) How to Train Your Dragon 2 was awesome, Empire Strikes Back is far superior to A New Hope, Thor Ragnarock breath some life into Thor’s series, even if it was a play to grab the feel of Guardians
4) I find a lot of what you mentioned irritating but if I was to pick one thing – it would be an obnoxious host. I can’t stand people who are super convinced of their own superiority. Poor sound quality would be second place.
5) I’m partial to a ham, cheese and onion omelette
June 2, 2018 at 8:56 am #1197706Happy weekend everyone,
My pledge for this weekend will be to prime and get the colour scheme set on a practice model for my Shadespire Chosen Axes. I always like to try out colour schemes on something else before committing on such a small force. At the same time I want to document my processes for this project as I often forget to or get a certain point and then forget to do a stage photo.
(1) Have you ever played dungeons and dragons? If not, why? If so, tell us what you like about it.
Yes, although it must be at least 25 years since I have. I always loved the monsters in it and the character generation. I think everyone is praying to the dice gods when they roll for a new character. I also like that in the following years I have come across more and more of the monsters in other games as they have become mainstream.
(2) Recommend me a podcast
Okay this didn’t start great as I had to look up the meaning of the word podcast. Luckily there is a one that I like which fits the criteria. The Joe Rogan Experience, its a night time show in the USA which does have swearing in it as well. It covers all sorts of subject matter and also has a video feed too so if you want a taster check out some of the clips on Facebook to see if it is for you.
(3) What sequel to a movie have you preferred over the previous instalment.
Let me first send us into muddy waters and then swim back to shore.
I prefer Return of the Jedi to Empire Strikes Back and swim, swim, swim.
I prefer Chronicles of Riddick to Pitch Black and to throw in a third one I am going to go with Terminator 2 to Terminator.
I would like to point out at this point that I really do like all these movies though.
(4) What do you find irritating about a youtube video or podcast that covers a subject you like? Stereotypical nerd obnoxiousness, pacing, camera focus, or poor editing/syntax/diction/dictation
The biggest one for me is probably the easiest one to spot and that is when the host/hosts are too over the top and forcing themselves to act excited and over energetic. Fine when your entertaining little kids but not so much for adults.
(5) Omelette of choice.
Ham and cheese, I am a pretty boring food guy but I do like a nice omelette 🙂
June 2, 2018 at 9:01 am #1197719“The murmur of excitement is palpable as the reigning champion steps up to the diaz!” 😉
My pledge is that, once I’ve cut the green weeds that proxy for grass in front of my house, that I might stop thinking about the possibility of painting my SW:L rebels and actually pick up a brush, use it to collect up some actual paint and introduce it to an actual model.
(1) Yup! It was >25 years or so ago (I know… I barely look old enough in my photo) and was AD&D 2nd Ed. My favorite character was a ginger haired half-elf with a secret quest to find the human (also not coincidentally ginger) that had seduced and abandoned his mother. DM was in on the secret… So my companions were constantly baffled why my wizard would suddenly fly into a rage by piling into a bar fight I’d start at every other town we passed through.
(2) Breachside Broadcast by Wyrd Games. If ever you wanted to understand the lore, background and characters in a game then this drips with the atmosphere in the world of Malifaux. It’s about the setting not the gameplay.
(3) I’m now going to sound pretentious and arty-farty but… Manon des Sources as the sequel to Jean de Florette. Gerard Depardieu spoils the first one for me with his OTT acting (see what I did there?) but thankfully his character dies at the end setting up the second film within which some of the acting by the rest of the cast is sublime. All in an idyllic, hot South of France setting.
(4) I find a number of podcasts dull, irritating where a group of enthusiasts go a bit over anal… ( cough)… sorry, analytical when discussing a particular game and its ‘meta’ for want of a word. Especially when one of them rips into something you know well but completely misrepresents it as useless and ‘unplayable’; but you barely recognise their version because you’re quite successful with it and play it completely differently! Something maybe for over-competitive gamers who just want to ‘master’ a game, whereas I typically want to enjoy the world (hence answer 2).
(5) Truffle, but only if the truffle was dug up from under a sapling oak tree that a young Emmanuelle Beart danced under as Manon in the above film. 😉 Mmmm – anyone got a pig I can borrow?
June 2, 2018 at 9:21 am #1197753Hi all
No pledges this weekend as stuff needs done in the garden

June 2, 2018 at 12:36 pm #1198124Brief responses for now, out and about for an hour or two.
@torros garden pledge!!! 5 points
@coxjul the undisputed weekender heavyweight champion of the world returns, well Beasts Mk 2 anyhow. Cool intro 10 pts
@Gaz welcome! New here or old hand returning*? 15 points because I feel like it! Also I just had a coffee
edit: hey @noyjatat ?
@avien 5 points for the pledge, love me some dropzone
@biggabum 10 points for being consistent with posting, 5 for pledge and 10 for first post
ok peoples get some pics up when you can ?
June 2, 2018 at 1:52 pm #1198253@mage The wife says i’m consistant too, but when sha says it, its usually followed by a lot of bad words 😀
@noyjatat Yep got to agree with you on Chronicles of Riddick being better than Pitch Black (although that was pretty good). Did watch the Third one, Riddick, recently and I though that just edged Chronicles (not by much though). On Terminator 2, yup most definately the best of all the Terminator films.
@avien welcome to the thread Sir.
@torros Mmmm Alien vs Aliens (we wont count 3 or 4) would be a hard choice for me personally. I think Alien was a little slower paced, had more suspense (although Aliens did have a good few good butt clenching moments), and was a little scarier, while Aliens was much faster paced and more exciting and the end fight between Ripley and Big Bad Momma Nasty was just so cool you could keep Ice Cream in it.
Ok pledge sorted… My Hex Beasts turned up so going to make a start on them…. once I can find a way of amusing the Granddaughter for a few hours…..
June 2, 2018 at 2:36 pm #1198330@biggabum (40 points)
Can’t wait to see you post up a game. What are Hex Beasts?
1) Try a fighting fantasy book! Not the same but close. 5 points
2) It is where a radio show streams over the internet on an app or youtube or something. Think the weekender on BoW only with just sound and listening to it on a break or the train or something.
3) I couldn’t think of any myself, but 15 for your choices. I strongly agree with ESB after I thought about it and Spiderman 2 instantly. In the case of the former its great because the introductions are out of the way, things escalate, and the good guys firmly lose and we are left with a cliffhanger.
4) I agree. Unless they are long with solid quality throughout it can be much at times. 10 points.
5) 10 points, solid.
@avien (55 points)
1) It is great for the auld freedom. Im running two campaigns back to back over the last year but took a break for one player to run a session as the GM. Do you watch Critical Roll? I also found a link on FB for a B&B with D&D. 10 points.
2) That’s very interesting. 10 points. I will check em out.
3) How to Train your Dragon 2? Im gonna give 15 points to that one. I agree with Empire. Thor Ragnarok is a sequel I guess, just not the second, and it did breathe more life back in. It did grab the feel of Guardians, but Thor doesen’t just stay around Asgard either. Another 15 points.
4) 10 points. Elaborate, I hope to do a podcast myself and want to avoid this.
5) Onion? Bleh! 5 points… tee hee.
June 2, 2018 at 2:49 pm #1198354@gaz (50 points)
Chosen Axes? The Fyreslayers? What colour scheme had you in mind? I want me some Shadespire
(1) That’s a long time. It is cool to see monsters in other games 🙂 10 points.
(2) No worries lol. I seen a bit of it and it seems quite popular. 10 points.
(3) I like how you phrase the muddy waters. That’s ok with Jedi. I think the original trilogy is just awesome. I loved me some Riddick. Surprised it didn’t do better and turn into a larger franchise. Terminator 2 is a good one. 15 points.
(4) Excited and over energetic? Where does one draw a line and not come across lethargic or apathetic. Like, can you give an example of a good host and bad one in this context? 10 points.
(5) 5 points. Seems to be a recurring theme on this thread.@coxjul (50 points)
What? No proxies allowed! Lol. I have been assembling a lot lately, and priming, and have fallen behind on painting. What scheme are you using for your rebels?
(1) Seems to be a lot of 25 years here with answer no 1. I like it, 5 points. Why did you stop?
(2) That actually sounds very interesting. Tell us more about it or give an example of one of the good episodes and break it down, if you’d like. 10 points
(3) Went waaaaaaaaaaaay over my head but got the OTT reference. 5 points. Lol. Never watched much movies with him. Is he good or crap?
(4) That’s interesting food for thought. Again, in case you missed it seeded in the original responses to peoples questions, I intend to do my own soon so this is a sort of research thing. 20 points.
Ehhhhh…. 10 points?June 2, 2018 at 3:06 pm #1198406@torros (15 points)
(1) 5 points. Its great fun for that too.
(2) Any reason why?
(3) 10 points, good choice.
(4) See no 2.
(5) Whats that?My own Answers and Pledge
************************My pledge? Keeping it simple this week. Work on my second batch of AoS Knights of Khorne.
(1) Have you ever played dungeons and dragons? If not, why? If so, tell us what you like about it.
I do, every Tuesday and love Tabletop RPGs despite having taken a hiatus from them for a couple of years. It’s a great pastime for the right people
(2) Recommend me a podcast
Little Gotham, for the Batman Miniature Game by Knight models. I quite enjoyed it
(3) What sequel to a movie have you preferred over the previous instalment.
I agree with ESB, Spiderman 2 and Thor Ragnarock above. Id also go with Captain America Civil War and Winter Soldier. Two Towers and Desolation of Smaug too. I have a feeling the upcoming Antman and the Wasp will be another example. As is the Dark Knight over Batman Begins and Batman Returns over Batman.
(4) What do you find irritating about a youtube video or podcast that covers a subject you like? Stereotypical nerd obnoxiousness, pacing, camera focus, or poor editing/syntax/diction/dictation
Overwhelmingly steretypically nerdy to the point where five seconds of it is torture. Worse than the nerds from the episode of the Simpsons ‘Homer goes to college’. We are all nerds but… dear goodness.
(5) Omelette of choice.
Jalapeno, cheese and chorizo. Moto bene!
June 2, 2018 at 3:14 pm #1198408@biggabum (15 points)
That is quite a surprise that, your wife’s opionion, haha.
10 points for replies to others.
Hex beasts look good. 5 points.
June 2, 2018 at 3:42 pm #1198461@mage Hex beasts are Humans corrupted by RJ1027. They can be played in a Hex army as your basic troop type… like Hired Hands in other armies, or, in our case, as a normal human who mutates in game. Some of the characters in most factions have a trait called “Tainted” (Which basically means they have been too close to RJ1027 for too long) and when killed have to make a roll, if passed they die and if failed they turn into a Hex Beast (and can cause you all sorts of poo).
The Steve Jackson Books? I did have one a few years ago…. Never got through it though, I’m not very good at decisions…. mmmm….Yeah maybe D and D is best avoided 😀
Ahhhh…. then no I dont listen to any. I need pictures 😀
June 2, 2018 at 4:08 pm #1198533@biggabum – thanks – happy to have found it! BoW 2.0’s mobile format means I can be more involved in the community. My wife’s not too found of 2.0 as a result ?.
@mage – I’ve come across a couple f YouTubers or podcasters who act really like their way is the only way someone should approach some aspect of a hobby/game/technique and really derides any other approach. It just suggests they are full of it.
Gotta love onions mate, well spring onion to be exact!
@torros – Alien vs Aliens is a tough one, but I think the original edges out in front for me. Love the suspense.
Pledge is well and truely underway. I’m trying out @lloyd ‘s foam mountains. Getting a bit bored with city based Dropzone tables. I have 12 pieces ready for the most part – might need a bit of fine sculpting to shape the rock faces a bit before adding paint, debating whether to leave the tops flat. I have cut offs to sit on top of the flat areas to stop them looking like they are all the same height- which is a bit of a concern.
I’ll be starting a project log for this project.
