    3) 5 rupees. Why does the adult disagree with the younger self?

Because the adult sees the cash flow and the motivations behind some actions. Though that doesn’t stop me from buying a lot of things regardless 😉

    (5) Tell us about how you discovered wargaming so instead ?

I’m pretty sure I mentioned it before but ok: I did military service back in the 1990s and was bored so I went to our bases shop and there was a strange little magazine called “White Dwarf” and it had a game in it called “Epic 40.000”. It was the German WD #21 and I think that was September of 1997. The rest is history 😉

@mage – pledges, dagnammit, I forgot about those. I bought some translucent ink to try out pre-shading with my airbrush; I’ve a lot on this weekend with family and everything else – what if I base and pre-shade a few Space Marines – will that suffice?

I’ve also had an idea after watching Big Ben’s Hobby Roundup video but it might take more than the weekend to get the bits together to try out and get working…….

    Hi guys 🙂

Not much painting happening as I just wasn’t feeling it this weekend, but did get some building done:

Had a spare Primaris Lt lying around so tried out a regular marine Powerfist to see how it looked

    2019-03-02 13.43.36

    Tried to 40k-up a 30k Chaplain,

    2019-03-02 13.43.46

And picked up a Space Wolf Dreadnought cheap off Ebay that needed a bit of TLC. Seller included an extra set of weapon sprues so was able to kit it out as a Venerable Dread with a Great Axe and Blizzard Shield. I’ve spares of each left over so it’s tempting to look into converting up a Contemptor the same way….

    2019-03-02 13.44.02

    Onto the questions 🙂

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

Typically try to work through it, load up on cold & flu meds, if all else fails spicy food to burn the beggar out…

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run down?

I try to. If nothing else engaging in these threads, reading some fluff or an army book, even just playing around with some kits, but probably not painting as that does tend to prove a struggle….

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

    …heavily fueled by pharmaceuticals 😀

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

Gods I have to pick just one? Whelp in that case I’d have to go with Ulysses 31. More than any other show, this one really dug it’s claws in when I was younger. I think the fact it was purely an animated show – no toyline or comic books – made it stand out as a notable rarity in the landscape of 80’s kids shows, and the fact it was a French/Japanese co-production lent it a particular feel that no other show really came close to.

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

Well Heroquest & Space Crusade are the reasons I’m involved in this hobby, as seeking out extra units, quests & missions are what led me to White Dwarf and the local GW (back when Terminators were £2 for a blister of 2). Otherwise GIJoe and the manga of Masamumne Shirow meant that Infinity really “clicked” with me, and are part of the reason I got back into the hobby in 2011 after peacing out in ’08.

What else on the weekends docket? I finished Corax: Lord of Shadows from the Horus Heresy – Primarchs series. A great read that brings into relief some of flaws in the character of the master of the Raven Guard, which I appreciate this series has been making all the Primarchs far more understandable. Next I’ve got the mass market release of Tallarn, the collected edition of the stories set during the planet wide tank battle that was the largest such engagement of the Heresy, and I have The Raven Tower to get through, the first fantasy novel from Ann Leckie, the author whose debut book (Ancillary Justice) won the Hugo, Nebula and Arthur C Clarke SF awards, and to date each book has maintained that level of quality…

Also got a podcast recommendation – The Battlestar Galacticast, an episode by episode retrospective of the 2000’s reboot hosted by Number 6 herself Tricia Heffer and writer Mark Bernadin (he wasn’t involved in the show but he writes for TV so brings that perspective), with (occasionally fueled by alcohol) guest appearances from members of the cast. Really interesting stuff, and frequently hilarious as they go into just how bonkers the shows production could get….

Second go at a reply…. I foolishly hit the close browser X before I hit submit last time.  RIP post…

Music first, more 80s bands I love

@pafetikbazerka The Equalizer was a great show.  Had forgotten all about it.

@tuffyears Hope your nephew is as impressed as I am!

@biggabum Thumbs up for Saxon and the lovely 4Ground Buildings in the match report.

@blinky465 would be great to see you do a He-Man game!

@mage Glad you enjoyed the tunes.  Pledge was fixing broken models and continuing getting the shed and my hobby stuff organised.  I have all my fixing done.  One model needs repainted though…won’t get that done this weekend. Metal Mickey was a show about a robot called Mickey… I don’t remember ever watching it but they tell me it was my favourite when I was 3 or 4.

@sundancer do you remember Highlander: The Animated Series?  Was it good?  Never heard of it before.

@dawfydd good work on the conversions.  I think they look great.

@robert Highlander: The animated Series was a  surprisingly good show for its time, and didn’t shy away from the nature of The Game (even if it jump cuts away from beheadings).

Disaster. A mix of model parts that had been stored in plastic cups in a box got turned upside down. An hour to sort this this afternoon.

Late, but at last getting to posting before work

How do you deal with a cold or flu?

A cold or flu gets the basic treatment of being burned out using habanero sauce, drinking lots of tea and sleeping as much as possible.

Can you hobby when you feel run down?

Feeling run down? Yes, that can impair hobby and make for slow painting. Then, once one piece is worked on to a tabletop level or something similar, it proves you can get there and keep going.

Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

The entertainment industry of the 80s was a great place to start with the “Anything goes!” attitude which fuels today. Look at Kung Fury as an example of what kind of lasting effect there is. In general I think it was good for what has been put out in film history with the help of Troma Studios.

Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

A tv show that I loved as a kid was Battletech (the original Macross Saga). I really enjoyed the robots and the level of drawing that was, for my experience, way beyond what I’d seen before. It gave me a larger gateway to enjoy anime later on in life. I’ve since returned to the series and been able to enjoy the first story arc but was iffy on the second and not interested in the following one.

What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

I’d say its a split between LEGOs and G.I. Jow having influenced me in the hobby. I’ve loved the ability to build and create things that have no basis on a specific plan to achieve a thing that I look for. This is my source of continued exercise in base creation where most anything can be analysed and looked at for potential for building something. G.I. Joe would be the other as a sense of heroic proportion to things or dynamic elements is what I want to be reflected in my minis. If there is a sense of larger than life play that catches my childlike wonder I am onboard.

As far as being slow to hobby I’ve been packing and dragging my feet to finally get around to slapping paint on a friend’s Eldar Epic army. I had to wrap my head around the fact that eventhough the figures are in 28mm scale they really are meant to be played at a 6mm scale. It has definitely changed my painting from being overly involved with trying to detail myself to death on these things.

    Happy Weekend all!

Back to the 80’s eh? I can roll with that!

    Questions? Answers!

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

    Stay home, take medicines, sleep!

I’m fortunate, I seem to have a rather robust immune system. I don’t often get sick, or I get over it quickly. But if not that then I drop like a stone. No hobby, not interested in tv. Maybe read, but mostly sleep.

If I feel a cold or flu coming on, I’ll start in on hot whiskey, lemon and honey in water. It probably doesn’t actually help, but it makes one feel warm and it’s tasty.

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run over?

Sure, if you want to build an army with flats! Hahaha!

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

I’m not sure I have much of an opinion on it… it was what it was, of it’s time. Big money, drugs, big hair.

It produced a few gems, it churned out a load of dross.

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

From my childhood in the 80’s

There’s the usual suspects:Transformers, Astroboy, Thundercats, Silverhawks, He-Man and the MOTU, Doctor Who, Monkey, MASK, COPS, Scooby-Doo, Voltron (both kinds), Danger Mouse, Duckula, Trap Door, TMNT

Some outliers (shows that I kind of liked): Gummy Bears, Machine Men, Smurfs, You Can’t do that on television,

Vague enjoyment memories: (I know I enjoyed them then, but I hardly remember them): The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31, Macross/ Robotech, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Robostory

Ah… I could easily go on and on… dammit @mage every time I go to google I come back with another name that I remember, another show that I loved!

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

Hmm, I feel like my influences into this hobby came primarily from books, games and family. Not so much from toys and TV.

Some movies that helped were Labyrinth, Willow, She-Hawk. The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon wasn’t a regular fixture of my childhood viewing, though I was aware of it. My child hood toys usually came from TV shows: Ninja Turtles, Ghost Busters, Transformers.

The pledge this week will be: continuation of Dark Angels, update and make public part one of the Dark Angel project, DnD Monday night, time and motivation permitting return to the Elf Project.

    More later!

@biggabum yikes! That doesn’t sound fun at all? glad to hear your back to full vision again! All the better to see Matty’s army coming at you…

    thanks for the mini batrep!

@voidifremoved I do remember Spellbinder, I remember my younger brothers enjoyed it more than I did, and even had a few books.

@robert you have excellent taste in 80’s movies ?

I vaguely remember Metal Mickey being broadcast on Australian TV too, a kind of kids comedy family sitcom? With a robot?

Oh nice find! In the shed was it?

Oh no, box of disaster… ?

    @tuffyears that’s one heck of an army…

@woldenspoons has good taste in tv shows too I see! Around the Twist! Classic Aussie kids tv! I enjoyed how they took all those short stories and rewrote them so they all happened to the same three kids.

Dammit @sundancer your list has another one I forgot, how could I forget Roger Ramjet?!?

@dawfydd power fist seems to work on Primaris, I have the same Chaplain( but I’ll be making him more Dark Angel), nice eBay pick up!

After @evilstu ‘s suggestion in the last thread I did some work on the Dark Angel Sergeants helmet wings:

    E49C3853-F295-4F44-91B6-7D51F145780E93169843-8AD3-4C0F-8DCE-A49E40DB6D4B

Almost done with this squad, just got to do the metals, transfers and basing. Then the transfers and basing on the previous squad, but I’m waiting on one more resource to finish those guys.

    #1356169

Ok… so I got out of work and it was *quickly calculates* -15C and not shy of pretty damn windy. I’m back home and bundled up and glad to see that there’s a sizable difference between the outside temp and the indoor one. I’m very glad that I just replaced the air filter for my heating system on Tuesday.

Quite a bit I missed from the beginning but I can say on the cartoon front that there was quite a bit I remember from your list @sundancer . There also were other features that were up at about the same time as I remember in Italy there were quite a few anime releases on Junior TV that come to mind:

    Lupin III

Galaxy Express 999 (Maitel still makes me melty)

    Fist of the North Star

    Captain Tsubasa

    Captain Harlock

    Saint Seiya

Ginga Patrol PJ (which I’d say is an inspiration for the current series Cells at Work. Platelet FTW!)

Hakushon Daimaō (found this only remembering that it had genies and was the source of inspiration for the character Sumomo in the series Chobits)

    Yatterman

and then there was a co-op station in Italy that I remember Italian and some British programs running on Channel 55 that ran Star Blazers

Right, to add my two cents to the musical mayhem

I would not be the person I am today without growing up and catching on the Armed Forces Radio broadcast of Dr. Demento on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.

A less obvious choice attached to the popular genre of hair metal/rock

    Now to continue breaking away…

A great addition to the film “Toys”

I try to forget all the Whitesnake, Def Leopard, Foreigner, the Pet Shop Boys and quite a few more that I trip over in digging into music.
