Not everyone has the same high demands of their ‘painted’ minis as some of us do.
I’ve seen 3D printed avatars based on photograhs.
And they did looke pretty good depending on the level of detail and colours of the subject.
If they can do for the colour proces what they’ve done for their ‘custom’ minis themselves by preselecting colours that are guaranteed to look good for each part of the mini then they have potential to deliver something really amazing. That could be a gamechanger *if* (and only IF) they can do it at a reasonable cost.
I’d suspect that even in a worst case scenario you may be able to a lot with a wash or a few highlights.
Skip the priming and only do the fine detail …January 14, 2020 at 4:23 pm #1470671Now Live
January 14, 2020 at 5:13 pm #1470676Great to see Tech advance but Insane prices..!!!!! and do you get…… i stick to 3D printing and painting myself…Looks like people just want the single test mini…. but boy that money clock is going up…
January 14, 2020 at 9:10 pm #1470743It’s obviously not meant for masses of miniatures (yet), but unless you are handy with green stuff and paint brush your chances of creating a custom mini for your hero character are pretty slim.
I don’t see any mention of size …
As a comparison this is an alternative for the cos players amongst us :
https://www.3dgeneration.com/en/3d-figuren/prices/a 3d printed full colour 10 cm figure based on a 3D scan costs 99 Euro …
It’s similar to the shapeways coloured figures that were posted earlier and they do look really good.
I suspect that depending on the colours chosen during the design stage the Hero Forge minis might surprise.
If they’re smart they pick preset colours that give the best print results. However even without the 3D printing the potential for testing paint schemes on a virtual version is a nice bonus.
January 14, 2020 at 10:59 pm #1470745Size-wise, their current interface has an actual height tool that shows the models height in mm if the pose was standing straight. Anything up to ~37mm fits in their standard pricing, bigger gets into the XL pricing (~ an extra $10 on the current system).
Production and shipping is through Shapeways and I anticipate some grumbling as the queue for fulfillment stretches months-long once the design tool opens. They said printing will be done on a Mimaki 3DUJ-553 full color printer, which I assume is a little better than a home model 🙂 !
January 16, 2020 at 6:42 am #1472459> still nothing to write home about for wargaming.
Definitely not for wargaming. You buy a GW 40K miniature, assemble it, paint it, and it looks exactly like it should be in the army lists.
You buy a RPG miniature, and you should be lucky if it matches the class, race, weapon, and armor of your character. Never mind that it doesn’t match your character’s hair. Never mind that it doesn’t match your character’s equipment. Never mind that it doesn’t have your character’s secondary weapon. Never mind that it has a pose that doesn’t reflect your character’s personality.
Oh, and you have to paint it too, huh? Spend all that money on paint and brushes when you don’t want to paint? Spend hours learning painting when all you want to do is paint one single miniature?
You know, I could buy my own cow and slaughter it, but I think I’ll go to a restaurant instead! :/
January 22, 2020 at 9:50 am #1476754so, on their current platform, if I wanted to custom design some Blood Bowl players, what sort of height would I need to stack up to GW’s current range for the game?
I have had a go on the Heroforge site and am I happy with what I can do, just not sure what I should be setting their slide option too!
As for the colour element that’s coming, not sure I am overly keen on it currently, the minis that are shown (as I think has already been pointed out) aren’t the same figure, and the colours look a little flat too me.
But I do think the overall package is quite impressive and future iterations of this may indeed see a huge change in how minis are produced.
January 29, 2020 at 10:18 am #1480400First “independent” review from Black Magic Craft…..
January 29, 2020 at 11:57 am #1480461Seen that this morning too. the tl;dr is “good as a gaming piece (for D&D) but no where near miniature wargaming”
And for the price still not mine.
The STL Option seems good though
January 29, 2020 at 7:26 pm #1480564Checked out the video for BMC and it just doesn’t do it for me either. The tech is cool but the modelling needs more “character”. Dynamic poses/effects make the unliving come to life. Kitbashing also can do the same with personal flair. I’m not sold on dropping my hobby not the prospect of losing commissions for people who don’t paint.
