Thanks for the link, I wish I’d been able to find that by myself but I’ll put it down to one of the joys of being 50+.
I was looking at doing a tour of the Nottingham Lead belt with Geek Nation Tours when Covid hit. I think keeping those little producers going is essential to the hobby. As much as I like the look of 3D printing, I wonder what it will do to smaller independent companies.
February 12, 2021 at 8:34 am #1609906Thanks for this thread chaps – I need a little free time here to fully digest it and get up to speed. I shall however return!!! 😉
February 13, 2021 at 9:42 am #1610317Different personality types and how they wind each other up, specifically related to gaming.
So the historical button counter can’t understand why anyone would enjoy a “what if” scenario “because it didn’t happen like that”. Or the WAAC, competitive, alpha-strike, list-builder can’t get how winning is just not a big deal to the casual gamer who plays a billion different ststems and can’t actually focus on one game long enough to learn the rules properly. And vice versa.
Basically, how we all enjoy the hobby differently but often seem to assume our own motives are actually universally shared. Supplemented by a dose of how we rarely see the flaw of intolerance in ourselves because we believe that objectively we are always correct, when in reality so much of our beliefs are subjective.
February 13, 2021 at 11:11 am #1610353Raw vs rai (rules as written vs rules as intended) should some rules be like IKEA instructions, show not tell
February 13, 2021 at 5:24 pm #1610551- What makes a game the most fun ?
aka : does one need to ‘win’ and how do you handle being defeated (all the bloody time) ? - how to enjoy a no-win scenario …
Where is the fun in playing a Kobayashi Maru equivalent for your system ?
How would you convince someone that it can be fun ?
February 13, 2021 at 9:45 pm #1610629@limburger no wins are one of my favourite types of scenario, just because you play by being creative, it doesn’t have to be rouge like rinse and repeat futility, play the mechanics not the game
e.g if I ever found my self locked in a room having to cut my foot off to escape then I’d decapitate the “corpse” in the middle of the room first and save myself from increasingly worse films 😉
Then again its a hackers mindset, so unless your happy playing with the unexpected in ways not intended I imagine it could be quite frustrating
February 14, 2021 at 1:58 am #1610698@timchubb it is frustrating because games in general and society teach us that we need to ‘win’ at everything.
I’d be tempted to argue that everyone needs to go through a literal no-win scenario to learn exactly what that feels like. However … the question remains : how do you present it to a (new) player without making them feel that it is pointless to even consider playing.
It is kind of related to “how to make (assymetric) scenarios fun”, because those too tend to have (what feels like) a pre-determined winner so it can feel like it is silly to play.So … plenty room for discussion 😉
And that’s what we want for Cult Radio topics right ?February 14, 2021 at 11:20 am #1610837When I was first taught to play Mancala, we played by what I was told were called “African rules” (we used to host international students, and I’m ashamed to admit, I forgot exactly who it was taught me the game) – there’s a specific rule in the game that says if a move exists whereby you make it impossible for your opponent to play, you must choose an alternative move. It reinforces the idea that the game is a passtime, not a competition.
It had a subtlety to the rules for scoring (so someone could be “winning” without collapsing the game) that I’ve forgotten since. But it stuck with me that there existed a game that had a rule specifically preventing a player from ending the game by creating a “winning” situation.
@limburger – we should all get to play a no-win game you say? (cough, Brexit, cough). No thanks.
February 14, 2021 at 12:33 pm #1610865@blinky465 I wouldn’t call Brexit a game …
February 14, 2021 at 9:56 pm #1611173Not so much a topic for minis, but more the music on Wednesday evenings – how about a night of cover versions?
Which covers are better than their originals? I love Nena’s 99 red balloons but there’s no doubting that Goldfinger did an absolutely stunning version of it. Me First and the Gimmees have put out some brilliant covers of all kinds of genres. The Wildhearts version of Understanding Jane puts the original to shame.
[btw anyone covering a Bob Dylan song obviously doesn’t count – as well respected as he may be as a song-writer, I don’t think there isn’t a Dylan song that isn’t improved by someone who can actually sing covering it 😉 – ducks for cover ]
February 15, 2021 at 12:28 am #1611264I second a covers night!
That would be ace, used to do a covers dj set at my students Union, before the rock night proper started (and the rock night if dj dave didn’t show up)
@blinky465 stop it your scaring me I shit you not you keep stating exactly my points of view on tooo many things, 100% agree on bob dylon, existential crisis of am i a warhammer or a narrative driven skirmisher, play rugby like rhino, 3am is the productive hour, mellow birds before bed and several other things lol is the multiverse overlapping¿? ¿?
(I’ve been on tour with goldfinger when I used to be a roadie, awesome chaps, made me join in backing vocals for 99 Red balloons one drunken night in france)
February 15, 2021 at 12:32 pm #1611407@timchubb – not in the least bit envious of your roadie exploits! My brother-in-law used to live in Berlin and we turned up one Thursday night for a surprise long weekend visit. By the following night we were playing a 40-minute gig in a seedy basement nightclub and we ended our set with Goldfinger’s version of 99 Red Balloons. Apparently that song is *the* “Berlin Anthem”. Went down a storm – best gig I’ve played (and it was only to about a hundred sweaty drugged-up punks!)
Right, let’s get this thing put to bed – here are a couple more for you:
Brown sauce on sausage butties (vegan or meat, I’m not fussy) never red (ok, only in emergencies).
The new Star Wars movies aren’t terrible.
Canal boats are awesome.
In we’re still in accord, the only possible answer must be that we are, indeed, the same person. In fact, has anybody ever seen us in the same place at the same time??
February 15, 2021 at 9:33 pm #1611557I dont think there is any other sort of German nightclub but seedy (unlike italy where its derelict and 50/50 chance of electrocution depending if the earth is actually connected), last time i was in berlin we soundchecked with take my breath away from the top gun sound track because its berlin 😉
brown sauce is the only sauce all others are imposters, fruity for streaky bacon, HP for everyday use, and daddies for chippy (although i have been known to enjoy tartar sauce with gammon)
I enjoyed the new films, (i prefered the source material/inspiration to the original films, dont get me wrong there good but i prefer the dune universe)
Lived on a narrow boat for 6 months in bristol harbourside and loved it till it got too cold in winter.
How the hell did we survive meeting at games expo!!
February 15, 2021 at 9:42 pm #1611559@timchubb – holy shit! I’m amazed we didn’t cross the streams – my wife and I lived aboard our narrowboat for over a year, up in Llangollen (about ten years ago). This is too spooky!
I’ve had experience of dodgy Italian wiring when we were over in Sicily last Feb – “what’s that funny buzzing noise? I haven’t got any pedals in my input chai….. btzzzzt”. I literally drove a 4ft metal spike into the ground outside my mate’s house and ran the earth (from my UK multi-plug adapter) into it! He promised he’d get his electrics looked at. I’m not convinced he ever did…
February 15, 2021 at 9:58 pm #1611564@blinky465 they probably looked, just didn’t take it any further….
