New article up on the Warhammer Community website:

    https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/02/06/cartography-in-the-old-worldgw-homepage-post-1fw-homepage-post-1/

Something interesting to note about the vid in it; it shows several names attached to coats of arms dotted around the map.  At first glance it looks like they’re redrawing the map and adding new subfactions into the Empire, but what’s notable is that the names shown, Magritta, Ludwig, Wilhelm and Sigismund are all names of claimants to the Imperial throne during the Time of the Three Emperors so it looks like the revival of WHFB is going to be set in the past of what we’re all familiar with; so not only is it going to serve as a ‘Horus Heresy’ period/game for AoS, but will also serve as that for classic WHFB as well.

For those unfamiliar with the fluff, the Time of the Three Emperors was a period between the mid 16th and early 24th Centuries, Imperial Calendar, during which the Empire was divided due to multiple claimants to the imperial throne.  Will be interesting to see what this. Means in terms of new fluff, rules, minis, etc

Yup seems that way. So time line wise it will be all the way up to the time of Magnus the Pious.

Gut feeling is a) skirmish ala Mordheim and Empire in Flames but I feel more likely is b) Warmaster scale.

I saw someone on he AoS FB post on this suggest that the names would imply a time of 1999IC, which was when Mordheim was destroyed.  In light of that, maybe this is a sneaky hint that we’ll be seeing Mordheim return via Specialist Games in addition to the mass battle system?

I knew GW would fail and foul this up. They can’t help themselves.

I don’t follow. What have they failed at doing?

@doctorether I suspect they have failed by not giving everyone everything they want.  Or by not cancelling Age of Sigmar and relaunching Warhammer Fantasy Battle exactly as it was in 2015.  Maybe.

Also, I do not think we will see anything at Warmaster Scale.  It never really seemed to me that it got too much love and, of all the specialist games, it’s the one I see the least people calling for. Could it be Mordheim, or have a Mordheim tie in?  Maybe. But I suspect we’re going to see a rank and flank style game at £28mm.  Obviously just my opinion and pure speculation at this point, I just can’t really see GW diving back into the small miniature scale market beyond Adeptus Titanicus

Seeing Warmaster again would be great . GW still own the rights to Warmaster edition Rick was writing at the time of his leaving

I’d certainly be buying a new version of Warmaster if that is their chosen direction but like a few others I think it it more likely that they go 28mm in some format.  28mm is their default position and Warmaster always felt like a bit of a vanity project for both designer and sculptors, none of whom are still at GW.  It is a great game and 20 years later still has an active community but perhaps not the sort to attract a commercial return in the manner of Bloodbowl.

Mordheim still seems highly likely for a relaunch at some point, whether tied to this project or not.  Lots of love out there for it and GW can see that similar games (Frostgrave) still have significant traction.  At the Plymouth show last week the biggest and best display table had a game of Ghost Archipelago on it.  I can easily see that sort of attention being lavished on Mordheim should it return.  Mighty Empires is also there as an option as we haven’t seen a version of that in a while.  I’m sure they won’t do this but I’d like to see a combined scales approach where we can run faction campaigns in Might Empires, fight grand battles in Warmaster and then get some narrative action in 28mm.

What do people think of the idea that this will be run and the models made by forge world as a vanity range

If this is the period where ‘Mordheim’ as a game is set then the WFB ‘re-launch’ kind of makes sense.
It might be how WarCry and Age of Sigmar share models.
They could use Mordheim as a starterset/introduction to the ‘classic’ WFB setting …

They never said it would be a mass battle system, did they ?

They haven’t really said a great deal beyond a vague hint about square bases

I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t do square bases after all …
it’s at least 2 years of development, lots of things can change.

Heck … it might even get canceled.

I am pretty sure it’s an “epic scale” game due to a clue in their logo (have a closer look) given that no one really wants an epic scale warhammer game it makes sense that GW would do exactly that.

I doubt you’ll see a Mordheim game because they already have Warcry. If Forgeworld are involved then that is evidence that it’s a skirmish game though, true, but the effort they’re investing is quite high … the issue is of course if Resin models are going to be involved.

It’s a massive fail because the easiest and best route for GW is simply to produce that “Warhammer 9the Edition” and heal all wounds. Clearly Age of Sigmar was a defective rule set that was rushed out the gates and the “2nd edition” of AoS is actually a patch not a new edition.

If you scan the warscrolls of AoS it’s clear that a “rank and file” mechanic was and still is being threaded into the game but they can never decide how to facilitate this (“wholly within” as opposed to “within”; the spear rules etc. etc.).

Without a doubt (imo lol) they have a proper Age of Sigmar second edition rule set – which has quite a lot more rule mechanics – in the works. The straight forward, obvious route to take other than scrapping AoS (which they will never do despite none of their success being down to AoS, rather it has been down to Start Collecting boxed sets, easier rules, bringing out factions which are often classic Warhammer factions that could have existed in Fantasy) – but the straight forward route is to bring out  secondary “Warhammer Old World” boxed set next to Age of Sigmar 2 with both games using the new AoS rules. This means that they can use that 40+ years of Warhammer Fantasy fiction and keep it relevant, barely have to lift a finger fluff wise, heal all the wounds they created, allow everyone to use their old figures, and, more importantly, almost all the AoS miniatures are -reusable or can be used for both games (even simultaneously).

Of course they won’t, because they’re obsessed with copyright (though they can re-name the original factions.. like they did 40K, no one would care at this point).

a ‘defective’ rule set that’s earning them a ton of revenue isn’t quite that ‘defective’.

Those ‘wounds’ only exist in your imagination, because you keep rubbing them every time you see GW do something that isn’t aimed at you and that manages to make them (a lot of) money.

If anything the only thing ‘wrong’ with AoS was that it was released before it was ready, but that’s has been fixed.
No one forced you to switch versions or stop playing WFB.
It’s not like this is a computer game where the ‘old ‘ versions are unplayable as soon as a new patch is released.
Never mind that with 9th Age you’ve already got the ‘classic’ WFB … (which isn’t attracting the following it ought to if people actually wanted that sort of thing).

A mere re-skin of AoS would not need 2+ years of development.
Never mind that it’s never ever going to satisfy the whiny beeps who saw their precious fantasy world replaced by something more successful and easier to get into.

I think if anything GW is hoping people have forgotten about what WFB was so they can create a new game without having to stay true to the original rules and background.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they declared all of the ‘old’ fluff to be invalid like Disney did to the expanded universe stuff for Star Wars …

So keep scratching that wound … it’s only going to fester and make Nurgle happy.

btw : of course they’re obsessed with copyright, trademarks and such … they’re business, not a charity.
