@phaidknott : I think at this sort of scale tanks aren’t a lot of fun for exactly the reasons you mention : the arms race.

The single tank my opponent had in my last game at bootcamp pretty much dominated the field.
That wouldn’t have been bad if I had got the PAK into position …
I also forgot that my AT rifle should have focussed on the Bren carrier, but that was me being a newbie.

There still were good moments in the game despite all of that though.

I’d say similar things happen at 15mm where the speed and firepower of aircraft tend to take the fun out of the game.
I think every scale has the ideal unit type.

@limbuger : Yup things can happen that way. It takes your local gaming group to come to a gentleman’s agreement on building your lists for a game for this to work. This “nerfing” came about in our group for BA when we found that tanks were dominating what is essentially an infantry skirmish game. So for a while we banned tanks and only used armoured cars, and we found the games were simply more fun (and the battles were decided on the tabletop rather than how you built your army list.)

For this early period in N Africa the most common armour were basically the “tankettes”, like armoured cars these are basically immune to small arms fire (well at range anyway), but an AT rifle can take them out. For the infantry facing them the main threat comes from the tanks MGs (so why do you need big guns to fight infantry). From the stuff the bootcampers got at the weekend the DAK got a great force to build up either “historically” or the more usual “tourney list” aspect. The Brits got the Matilda (but it’s still armed with a 2 PDR, so it’s not got HE and needs to rely on it’s MGs to take infantry out).

I’ve played a fair bit of games from the N Africa campaign and enjoy the aspects that set it aside from the more usual fare (especially in the early years). But it takes a bit of restraint in building army lists to have fun (for example go for the later period and someone buys an 88 or even worse a Tiger I and the game is pretty much decided before the miniatures are put on the table (remember we’re talking about wide open vistas here with little or no cover to try and sneak up on things). It’s one of the reasons why our group stuck to the early period.

So by buying PZer IIs and Vickers, you still have a “tank”, but your anti tank capabilities can also be covered with the AT rifle. And as these were issued to each squad, these were fairly common. But by fielding the bigger heavy tanks in an infantry skirmish, the tank stops being a supporting element and becomes the dominant factor (or however kill the opponents tanks first wins the game after a few turns delay mopping up the infantry that can’t damage it).

But try a few games just using A/Cs at first only, and see if you feel it gives a better game. The competitive army list you can leave for an actual tourney. We just found that our games at the club became a lot more fun, AND became more historically accurate (in regards to the equipment used) without having to use things that were battalion or regimental assets supporting a mere infantry platoon 🙂

in the western desert book it reads in dug in section being dug in is the same as going down then it says (+1 to hit 1/2 he rounded down)  and if you go down (+2 1/4 he). so 0n the first would it be +3 hit and when you actually go down while dug in a +4 to hit. the down stacking with the dug in ??? or am i over thinking this haha jeff( jackie)

@jackie that’s an interesting question I’ve not got access to the western book yet, soon I hope 😉

If I was a betting man I would say that is a misprint based on the old rule which was an additional -1 to be hit when down, in fact the rules quick ref at the back has the same mistake. Personally I would play it as the -1 to hit 1/2 the HE, rather than making that a -3 but I can see the argument for it because of the inclusion of that line.

I checked  FAQ or the forum and no one has asked the question yet. I’ll pop a message to Charlie on the super secret facepage thing though and see if he can clarify it.

[EDIT] Just saw the rules as written, change that to a -2 and a -4 respectively to be hit with the 1/2 or 1/4 HE hits, I think that makes more sense until an offical FAQ comes down.

Thanks very much @damon, @buggeroff , and @brucelea – finishing up unpacking now and taking a quick inventory to check what was damaged, not only for LRDG pre-built army, but new DAK components, Panzer Leader, Darkstar, and ll the other materials I brought with me (it was a busy week!).

Seriously, @damon and @brucelea – all respect to Bolt Action, but that Panzer Leader was probably one of the highlights of the trip for me.  If you guy are serious about remote e-gaming to keep that ball rolling (with some smaller games to start with), please feel free to ping me via PM or [email protected].  We’ll see about setting something up.

@torros It was very tempting to stay.  However, being a Florida girl, I might eventually miss the sunshine.

@brucelea We will definitely will take  you up on your offer!  Be afraid and be warned…you will need to play many panzer leader games now that @oriskany knows you enjoy it.

@gladesrunner and @brucelea – Sunshine and Panzer Leader, the only two things a man needs in life.

    Well, and Quavers.  😐

Did up a couple of Jeff’s Valentines (owed him for assembling my 4Ground buildings).
Leaving the weathering and damage up to him.

damn … if only I had won my games the DAK would have been even more victorious.

OTOH … maybe the 8th Army is glad I wasn’t on their side ? 😉
