@tarrox I don’t personally think we will ever be able to develop an AI that can understand context well enough to identify context (i.e. for purposes or satire, comedy or parody). Interpretation of satire and comedy and indeed any form of art is subjective and two people can draw very different conclusions when viewing the same thing. On a personal level, neither conclusion is invalid and they are arrived at based on those persons’ lived experiences, current emotional state and general world views. Even if were to actually develop a true AI accurately identifying context would be no more accurate than a human, probably less so because the “lived experiences” and feelings of an AI (should it even have feelings) would be so vastly different to that of a human that it may well have no real understanding of human comedy and satire.
And that’s one of the real issues. Computers cannot adequately detect any of the subjects for which the article makes provision and never will. Conversely there is too much data to ever be reviewed by humans and so what are the options? Well, in order to protect themselves from lawsuits, hosting platforms are likely to ban anything regardless of its artistic merit and may or may not be able to unblock it if you’re lucky.
It’s simply not possible to implement an automated system that can handle the provisions made by the directive, nor is it practical to implement a manual review system. So the net result will be corporate censorship and as a consequence yet more liberty is taken away from the people and control given to large corporations. Don’t get me wrong I love Cyberpunk with it’s corporate dystopian vision of the future but I wouldn’t really want to live there; but that’s where we’re heading and every concession made to corporate interests is a step closer.
If only all politicians behaved like this lady.
