I have started some Forge Fathers models for Firefight, a couple of us who are mostly Kings of War players are going to give it a go.    We will play at the Ribble Warriors in Preston. Lancs, Uk long shot that anyone is nearby and fancies a go but you never know 🙂   Haven’t started painting still in the buying and glueing stage but thinking of going for a grey/blue  colour scheme with electric blue accents.   Not being sensible didn’t go for a starter force as I want all my Forge Fathers to helmeted I want a dwarf miners in Space look.   Anyone else going to give Firefight a try?    I am going the tradition route of starting the models before looking at the rules or seeing if I like the game.

It’s on my list, but I need to finish my deadzone starterset first … and with my kind of speed we probably will be at a new edition (or a new expansion) before I get that done 😀

I’ve been doing some playtesting for it, so my plague force have been expanding over the last couple of years, so ready for games at release.

I’ve also bulked out my Veer-myn numbers with FF in mind.20210120_08441020210120_084009

Finally saw more of the new starter set :

I don’t know how much the rules have changed since previous editions, but I must admit that they do sound cool.
Not having to measure every ff-ing model in a squad is definitely the way to go when you want to make games finish faster.

The only thing that sucks is that the fluff has been a bit tricky to get into and it doesn’t have quite the same level of flash that games from the one company that shall not be named do. However I’d say I’m happy to trade flashy art for an easy to understand ruleset with all faction data available at launch …

The Warpath/Deadzone fluff and lore is actually quite good. Evil human corporations dominating the galaxy, different spheres of human influence with varying levels of equality, aliens with their own agendas or resisting human expansion, ancient horrors lying in the outer dark. It has enough to flesh out your battles and campaigns, but I don’t see it rivalling GW. That sort of market dominance and popularity don’t come along often.

They definitely made an effort in promoting the fluff this time around.

It isn’t as thick and as convoluted as 40k’s, but otoh that makes it so much easier to digest and find a place to ‘game in the gaps’ as it were.

I am not big into the ‘fluff’ as long as there is enough background to help my imagination I am happy.   I don’t think Firefight needs to rival 40k if it can get as much success as Kings of War I thin it will be doing well.   I am looking forward to do a Sci-Fi army   for a change from Kings of War.   I have more trust in Mantic than GW for rules as I have been happy with how the rules have been handles in Kings of War.

First model done trying to work out the army colours it has ended up brighter and less gray than I was thinking of to start with:-277592793_493018869159210_6426778989054309328_n

Sculpts across the range look quite static.

Mantic’s rank-&-file troops tend to be pretty conservative and static.  It’s been interesting watching the old rank-&-file Marauders (Space Orcs) go from weird, ballet-dancing, kinetic, slightly cartoonish buffoon orcs, to now being very two-feet-on-the-ground, gun-aims-right, camo-wearing modern soldier orcs.  I don’t think I’m really impressed by either style.  Fortunately the leaders and special resin sculpts stand out more on the table (but of course are also more expensive).

@dazlamb it doesn’t have to be a lot of fluff, but I find it hard to relate and get a feel for factions if they’re just a bunch of statistics.
It’s kind of why I am so dissappointed with the modern Codexes for 40k. A (good) faction list should be thematic both in mechanics and actual layout/presentation.

Anyways …  rules wise it is obvious that Mantic know what they’re doing and why. I like their no-stress approach, but I’m sure there’s people who can ruin these rules as well by taking them a little too serious and literal …

@tankkommander Mantic is not GW … so I doubt they will mind it if you use alternate sources 😉
I do like that there’s not a ton of fragile crap attached to the models, so you can handle them like the gaming pieces they are instead of trying to use display pieces in a game … and as a bonus they look like they won’t bump their heads or get caught in the local shrubbery while walking 😀

@linburger I am expecting a brief background for Warpath and Forge Fathers in the rulebook and list book and some artwork.   I think I would be put of it was just stats but I expect to sit down with a coffee once the books turn up and read the rule and background and get a good idea of what’s what.    I think Mantic is balanced enough between Rules, Models and background for me.    But the main thing is I am relatively sure I’ll be able to get a game and I think it will be fun.

I just like seeing painted armies on the table and even all Mantic Kings of War elf armies all painted and based up look good to me.   I am looking forward to having a Forge Fathers army I think it will look good as an army.

you’ll see my unboxing next week but essentially two books. Force lists is just that, army lists and pictures of models.

Rule book, 100 odd pages, 45 pages of rules, 20 pages of scenarios, 30 pages of lore and backstory covering the major races and events. There is a lot more in the Warpath Sourcebook if that takes your fancy, or if that is enough for you then you’re good to go.

I know they’re planning more novels and stories as some people want a lot more, while others just want models on the table. So you can dive in as deeps as you want or just paddle at the edge. it’s a nice system

Mantic just posted the best video so far in their how to play series.   The Assault phase.  It is really turning out to show a lot of tactical depth to it.  Far more then just charge in and roll some dice.  You really have to decide how you want to move into combat,  if you want pin the targe first with another unit, and just what kind of resistance you will get from reaction choices.  So many tactical choices to be made in this game.

I bought the set of three books on preorder when they first launched them. I’ve not read them yet… I have just bought the new Kill Team box, so trying to resist another new shiny. Not trying hard, mind you… Are the version differences major and justify the new purchase?
