Thanks for helping keep the thread going, @olliep . 😀
Well, it would be coming up on 17:30 on the beaches soon. The Canadians are finally realizing their flanks are too exposed to maintain the push on Carpiquet, and instead have to focus on linking up with Sword to the east and Gold to the west. Americans are finally starting to stabilize of secure lodgement on Omaha. 1st Commando Brigade arrived about four hours ago to assist the “Ox & Bucks” (Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry) in defense of Pegasus bridge, but the actual line infantry won’t arrive there to “formally” connect with the Sword bridgehead for another four hours (21:30 local, well after nightfall even in June).
In summary, the “Longest Day” is finally drawing to a close.
Dutch ‘Princes Irene Brigade’ landed in August, so technically not during D-day but definitely part of the overall effort.

The bletchley park twitter has been tweeting some of the decoded messages during D-day :
Also this :
Not everyone doing their bit for D-day was a soldier.
Thanks for the ‘shout out’ @oriskany.
You’re quite correct, the Polish II Corps were, at the time of D-Day, still in Italy attached to the British 8th Army. On 12th May, they launched their assault along Snakeshead ridge toward the monastery atop Monte Cassino, the fourth attempt by the Allies to capture the monastery. This was part of Operation Diadem, a large offensive by British 8th Army and US 5th Army. The Polish suffered horrendous losses in their first assault which lasted around 3 days. Their second assault on 17th May was again met with resistance but the Germans began withdrawing on the night of the 17th leaving the Polish to finally take the monastery on the 18th May with little, if any, resistance.
While the Polish cracked the nut of Monte Cassino, in my view it’s doubtful they would have succeeded had the Germans not withdrawn. Instrumental in the success were the French Expeditionary Force (FEC) of US 5th Army, who advanced ferociously and rapidly up through the Aurunci Mountains and then turned East into the Liri Valley that the British 8th Army were advancing up. This freed up the British reserve of 58th Infantry Division to advance and swing around behind Monte Cassino and begin cutting off the German retreat. This really forced the Germans to retreat from Monte Cassino for fear of being surrounded and cut off.
Two days before D-Day, General Clark of US 5th Army entered Rome and the British 8th Army began to redeploy back to the East coast of Italy.
21:45 hours in the invasion zone now, and the non-commando ground forces from Sword Beach have finally linked up with the Commandos and the airborne troops at Pegasus Bridge. Meanwhile, a German counterattack has been defeated at Gold (Kampfgruppe Meyer), Yet the Germans have also driven back to the coast at Lion sur Mer, briefly splitting Juno Beach off from Sword Beach. Meanwhile, as darkness falls, Allies start to prepare to bring in D-Day+1 forces, including 2nd US Infantry at Omaha, 90th Infantry at Utah, and lead units of the 51st Highlanders, 49th Infantry, and 7th Armoured (the famous Desert Rats). Although many of these units would not be fully deployed until perhaps week later, reinforcements continued to pour into the beachhead.
I think something like 180,000 Allied troops were landed in all on the opening day.
But of course Normandy campaign doesn’t end until mid-August with the closing of the Falaise Gap at Argentan, and the destruction of 7th and 15th Armies.
So I’m gonna go ahead and sign off. Thanks to everyone who helped keep this thread going on this important day.
Absolutely no worries, @redvers – it was the least I could do. Those are great projects you run that should really be getting more attention here in the community.
No problem, @olliep – it was no WWDDC, but still felt like it had to be done.
Meanwhile, we’ll be running a Gold Beach recreation live on the web for community members @damon and @brucelea . 4PM UK time, Saturday, June 8.
Let me know if anyone want to check it out s it plays live (probably won’t be putting up a battle report) – I can send you a link to the web conference.
