The force is low today, after only one day off on the weekend, and a 12-hour shift yesterday.
Got home, crashed, woke up, and I’m back at work, so no hobby accomplished! I’ll make up for it this coming weekend.
Game on, everyone!
August 20, 2019 at 4:29 pm #1428190@unclejimmy you can still get good knock-offs out of Russia. I see them often on EBay, particularly the $120 Forge World space marine kits, which usually go for about $15.00. Some are made in China, and show up on Alibaba in quantity: minimum order 50,000 or some such nonsense.
@limburger I would disagree that GW makes the best kits. They are getting killed on their sci-fi IP. Here are just two examples. First, a few more Tau models from Wargame Exclusive:
Another example. Raging Heroes also does way better Sisters of Battle. The GW ones look like dudes.
I think GW is falling further behind actually, but you can see there’s an effort underway to turn things around.

I’m not talking about the model design (which can be uninspired and lazy).
And I’m pretty sure they don’t have an assembly booklet like GW do either. In terms of total pacakge their (modern) plastic kits are really good.
If you carefully cut the parts of the sprue you have practically zero mould lines to worry about as well.Warlord are pretty good too, but then some of their kits are Italeri designs …
If only they would put some effort into their assembly instructions.Compare that to the likes of Zvezda … which is cheap for a very good reason (lower detail & quality).
August 20, 2019 at 5:26 pm #1428197Ah, sorry @limburger. I misunderstood. Yes, they do go together quite well. I’ve built a few razorbacks and just finished my realmgates, and there are very few noticeable seams… and the instructions were good
August 20, 2019 at 7:45 pm #1428222Geedubya range especially considering how much of it they churn out is top draw. Mantic are getting there but seem to have the cheap and c.. Oh just watch the Weekender. John echoes my sentiments.
True story about those radio control tank kits. On one of my trips to the local store some chump butted in to show off his tank and drove it around just really annoying me.
After a while he offered me a go. I confirmed the controls with him and then shot him in the dick with his own tank. One of my proudest moments.
August 20, 2019 at 8:07 pm #1428226@ceppie – real life does suck a fart from an old man’s arse and holds it in like a bong rip! 500pts. If I bought that bit of land you could quit and come and work for me.
I am sure I could match your current wage, but the benefits would be good. Plenty of 12 hours works days after some White Rabbit! Ten minutes before Heather comes in we can look as though we have been doing something. If something really needs doing we can get someone in!
Too many days like that will mess you up. Like when Apu thought he was a Hummingbird.
One of Dave’s friends bought a copy of the FW Eldar Titan. It was a cleaner cast the most FW kits. £110 and it was perfect. The company we used to buy from even do knock-off minis. For £70 Dave bought this stunning sculpt of Kolek Sun-Eater.
I bought the Nurgle Lord on horseback and the Dwarf character mini and they were perfect and less than half the price. However, they were delivered by hand and were packed inside some china figurine package! Not at all dodgy.
The Tau lady must get some serious wedgies!
All the new SoB minis are clearly all computer made. No feeling to them.
@limburger – Zvesda kits rule!
I think their models look pretty good.
@woldenspoons – shooting a choob in the dick with his own tank is my story of the week! 1000pts. I love it.
August 20, 2019 at 8:11 pm #1428227Some more bits to slop some paint on…
…and I now have two crates of Infinity style bits to make things out of!
The dead General Rimmel. He is a radio controlled zombie.
Kelly and Oddball. Woof-woof!
August 20, 2019 at 8:16 pm #1428229@woldenspoons – when we used to still have our martial arts ‘club’ we would get the odd Bruce Lee coming in and flexing their muscles. This chopper was reverse-roundhouse kicking an empty drinks can from one the top of someones head. Derek wanders over and I can see him talking to this guy who has even had the nuts to walk in wearing his own black belt!
Derek puts the can on his head and the guy does some fancy kick and knocks the can clean off his head. The guy picks up the can and outs it on his head and Derek just front kicked him in the mushkie.
August 20, 2019 at 8:28 pm #1428230Good old shot to the nuts. Definitely my finishing move.
August 20, 2019 at 8:54 pm #1428236@unclejimmy GW operate in the hobby/games/entertainment market. They compete for teenagers and men’s pocket money not only against other similar companies who sell similar products but they also compete against TV, Sports, Music, Train Sets, Computer Games. Even before that, they allow other hobby shops to sell their product at a lower price, yet they still are one of the better performing chains on the British high street. A pub doesn’t allow you to bring in a few cans from the offsales, or restaurants don’t allow you to bring in your own dinner you cooked yourself, so why does not allowing other paints to be used in your store make you a monopoly? Owning and protecting an IP does not make you a monopoly. Being the most successful company in your specialised area, does not make you a monopoly.
Zvesda kits are decent. They aren’t that much cheaper than PSC or Battlefront. Though a problem with mixing them are slight differences in size… Battlefront are a bit chunky compared to the other 2.
Bolt Thrower did three sessions for John Peel, pretty sure I have it on CD somewhere or I may even have it on vinyl… been years since I listened to it.
My big boy is now glossed and got some basing put down this evening. Perhaps even get him finished tomorrow.
August 20, 2019 at 9:13 pm #1428247Who makes the oddball mini?
August 20, 2019 at 9:38 pm #1428250You get what you pay for … ain’t nothing wrong with that, provided you know 😉
@robert Warlord has them and it looks like the full crew from the movie :
GW have a monopoly in shops that is not good for the hobby.(period)
I dislike shops that only ever sell the one product/manufacturer (Apple, Bose, ), because they don’t allow you to chose from competing brands and it creates the kind of tunnel vision that almost put them out of business …Such a thing may be ‘legal’ and it definitely makes sense from a business perspective (owning everything from manufacturing to retail is great for margins/profit), but that doesn’t mean it is good for the consumer as they get less choice and a product that is needlessly expensive.
It is true that they’re competing against other hobbies, but so is everyone else.
They are however not even half as good at using the connections they’ve got as they could be (their licensing is ridiculously short term focussed as proven by the licensed mobile games …).August 20, 2019 at 9:56 pm #1428255@woldenspoons – it was the first move I taught Eve when she was young. If someone doesn’t go down then your next move should be to run…very fast! All of your fancy Martial Arts are bollocks. 100pts.
@robert – I never said that me wanting to use a single non-Wacoshop paint or something better than their shitty brushes made tham a wannabe superpower. I was just pointing out that they turned into total bastards towrds their customers when they became a ‘business’. What it the mantra…it’s not personal, it’s just business?
They even stopped you mentioning other peoples games. Not trying to promote them, but just mentioning them.
I know what you mean about the Battlefront minis. Have you ever tried the ones from Westwind?
If Bolt Thrower did a Pell session then I will have to find that. Peel sessions rule. I have heaps of them. All of the 80’s “Festive Fifty” too. I didn’t get to listen much after July 1985, but would try and catch up at xams. That was where I first heard Public Enemy.
Mr. Nurgle looks honking. I can smell it from here! Unless Heather has cut an air-biscuit and not said anything? A few more pics if you get time…pretty please.
Oddball is Artizan miniatures (I think!). I have Joe too.
@limburger – I did see a Golden Demon entry in WD once that was a standard Marine, but with a MaxMini head! Someone missed that one. They do make some outstand stuff if you have never checked them out.
Before I see if any of the unwashed are interested – anyone intersted in some Infinity terrain. There are two full sets of buildings from the Tohaa starter set and for OP Firestorm. Never even used. There is the playmat thing too.
August 20, 2019 at 10:05 pm #1428258Well, you have 24 more hours to get you bits sorted for this week. There is nobody in tomorrow and I don’t have my Puggies until friday so I will be all your tomorrow as I try and get some of these things finished!
Question: does anyone have a good/easy way to paint lighting effects?
August 20, 2019 at 10:21 pm #1428265Things like these :
https://maxmini.eu/by-faction/orcs-and-goblins/orc-alliance-veterans-miniatures
35 Euro for 5 Nobz is GW prices … they do look cool.
They also have something called Ork Alliance Willys ?
Not sure if I dare click on that link …(just kidding … I know the original WW2 Jeeps had that name)
