Bolt Action & Flames of War Terrain for Dr. Dave!

In this week's show the guys settle down to have a look at all the cool WWII content that Warren and Dave have been filming. We also have two new gaming tables to show off and get the low-down on how they were made.

I believe I’ll take this episode to Starbucks.
Well im half tempted to watch it on my break at work, which will be me sitting on top of a roof apex because im cementing in ridge tiles lol
Good show. Shortish, but very gaming-focused.
Look forward to the modelling articles – Hobby Lab, I believe Warren said, and some tutorials from Romain.
Homerun guys with that board. It looks awesome and it is perfect for portability. Exactly what I was looking for.
When will it be up on Hobby Lobby 🙂
Can’t wait to get started on a board. I know Citadel don’t make the grass mat anymore but Woodland Scenics do some that seem real nice. Will pick up the lumber tomorrow.
Looking forward to FoWFTWII and Bolt Action.
Um… you can only have one R2D2 in your list- It has the “unique” dot.
Yeah, it’s not a normal R2 unit that restores shields, it’s R2-D2.
So you should only see 1 X or Y Wing in the entire squadron getting their shields restored.
I’m guessing a lot of people already know about this, but this is the perfect resource for making your X Wing forces, it’ll ensure you’re on the right track.

That has to be some of the best looking great value for money terrain I have EVER seen. A stroke of genius, guys. Very handy for me as I play 15mm and 28mm.
Gotta admit. This is the first weekender in a long while that bored the shite out of me. Still rather wath this than most of the crap out there though. :-p
You answered your own dilemma there, Warren. The sniper is meant to go on an elevated position. You’re obviously free to make any game whatever you want it to be, but playing a TLoS game as it’s intended involves getting your head round the minis being static.
I can see Bolt Action and 40K mechanics going well together, they’re like cousins. Which I guess would make Alessio their uncle lol.
I agree 100% about the sniper. He’s modeled like that on purpose I think to reduce his LoS because otherwise he’d be really, really overpowered instead of just overpowered 🙂 (I’m an Enforcer player so I can’t complain)
Great show lads brilliant ideas for terrain, can’t wait to see the how to vids.
1. Dave rocks
2. Really looking forward to the XLBS and bolt action.
3. Hobby Lab = awesome idea
4. Great news on Romains upcoming vids.
Really enjoyed the show and the half hour probably just saved me 800 calories in biscuits.
The ridges and furrows you see in agricultural fields are caused by the actions of the plough 🙂 Also if you are out walking or driving anywhere if you see fields which are now covered in grass and other stuff but have the outlines of these furrows you could potentially be looking at thousands of years old agriculture!
I love winter themed Tables.
For snow you could try to add some blue (very very little) into it. This will work against yellow.
In terms of LOS one of the ways around it is to do what Warmachine and Hordes do. A miniature has a ‘cylinder’ around the base showing just how high it can be. That means however you make your miniature it never changes in terms of what it could potentially see. It does deal with the whole ‘but he is crouching’ thing.

It would radically change DZ as a game to the point you’d have to re-write some of the mechanics.
Yeah most likely – just bringing up a system that allows for this kind of modelling. I don’t like some of the other things about Warmahordes but I do like that. Makes things a lot more simple most of the time.
It was heavily discussed during the open beta and there were some vocal and persistent proponents of the cylinder LoS model. The TLoS model was chosen because it did a better job of facilitating the intended gameplay experience.
That said, anyone can play DZ or any game however they want. If I ever went back to WFB I’d not be using the LoS rules they brought in for 8th ed.
Yes, very true. I think as a whole I have no problem with the ‘dynamic model’ thing, especially when it comes to cover. If I can shoot you from behind the cover as you ‘peek over it’ then I assume the enemy can shoot back at me and just get some kind of cover bonus.
I do like TLoS though – seems to work with most games quite well.
Bet there’ll be some confused checkout staff around the country thinking “strange that’s the third person who’s come in and bought two odd carpet tiles and a mat”.
Hobbylab sounds like it will be hit especially with the emphasis on storage
Nice table, I use Morrisons 99p doormats for fields, gives the same ploughed effect and if you flip them over they have a rubberised Tarmac looking surface for roads/car parks etc.
Think I might go to b&q this afternoon to get stuff to make your flexible hedgerows though, looks excellent, much better than the crappy Brillo pad based ones I’m using now.
Looking forward to FOWFTW 2 and bolt action vids.
Great vid again guys, good ideas for scenery there.
For Warrens ‘Giant rocket of Doom’ idea, you want suethe smoke generators, they are sold in model railway shops and cost £12 to £20 or so a piece depending on how much smoke you want. Just hook up to a 9 volt battery and off you go (they are designed for 12V max input but work fine on the 9 volts). They use a non toxic oil to make the smoke so it’s all safe as well.
Dave is AWESOME!
Good show. Wish it was longer, very interesting stuff.
That line of sight rule isn’t perfect but it is clear; I side with Justin.
Also: DAAAVE! Wahoo!
That’s some good looking terrain. Thumbs up for Lloyd and Warren.
Modular ( has Dave would say )
I was looking at those tiles and thinking… “humm!!! 10x10cm (completely arbitrary number) triangle tiles. How modular would that be?”
Anyway, Happy to see Dave again

B&Q is also going on ze list
I think, I want a game of bolt action or fow with Dave, both of us in our uniforms! The tank nut vs the tactical genius 😉
Awe another weekender time to break out the paints and some coffee,
Gotta say that game board is pretty sexy eye candy indeed. I am fighting the urge to start flames of war and you guys are making me fail at the attempt of showing the world that I am not a sucker for a good war game.
Great stuff. I was going for a cityscape bolt action board, but I might have to get some mats if it’s that cheap. Although those trees cost a pretty penny, don’t they? You must have about 20 there.
I’m excited for more! Whoop, whoop Dave!
A simple basic way to deal with it for those particular models is to just rest the sniper barrel on top of the barricade. Sure, the models base isn’t completely flat, but hey, it’s better than slowing down a game. You do run into some fairly irritating issues though, I admit. Particularly with things like the 2 Goblin snipers, the orx and plague dogs (One model is rearing up, the other is running) plus the 3 plague 2nd Generation variants. At least with them, you could just swap out the model as they’re exactly the same, I don’t think most… Read more »
It’s a real shame in the case of the goblin snipers. The dancing one’s one of the worst minis in the range, while the kneeling one is the absolute best IMO.
I think the kneeling sniper minis work really well. You have to get them up on a elevated position with clear lines of sight for them to work.
Such great ideas for modular terrain! For those of us without a dedicated gaming room these ideas are going to help out lots. Can’t wait for the modeling show!
I just want to say that I love the silly animal cups.
