I’m going to try out Infinity for the first time next month. After many many years of being a loyal GW customer i’m finally taking my first few steps away for the giant that have sett his own pants on fire.
And reading through the free rules on their homepage i can just say…wow this looks like a fun trip.
Great read btw!
Infinity is very different from 40K and in my opinion a lot more exciting. The ARO mechanic that makes it ‘always your turn’ is brilliant. It takes a bit of getting used to and it definitely helps to play through the game with an experienced player. But after my first introduction I quickly became a convert. I hope you will have as much fun with it.
I’ve never been too shy of trying new games. Since I’m more of a builder/painter than a gamer any good looking model or army display can attract my attention. My biggest handicap is the size of my wallet. 🙂 I still have a 10mm Warhammer Historical army in the making lying around. Got encouraged by a few friends to get into that game, but never got around to play it yet, since all the models have to be painted and based before you can practically use them. Eventually it got abandoned in favor of other projects. (See comment above.) Next… Read more »
Inspired by your content on historical gaming I had FoW or Boltaction in mind for some time. Living in the region of Germany between the dutch border and the Eifel (Battle of the bulge), I think it could be interesting to visit some of the historic places to learn from the past.
I was not sure if I should choose FoW or Bolt Action, but having only a limited space to play (the classic 120×180 / 4×6) I think I’ll go for 15mm to have a lot of tanks on the table.
This is a great article! I’m particularly happy to see another BoW team member dip his toe into the chilly waters of historical gaming. 🙂
In all fairness, although usually a historical gamer, I’ve always liked sci-fi as well. Especially cheesy, light, “populist” sci-fi. My other half (BoW Backstager @gladesrunner ) got me playing “King of Tokyo” (Godzilla monster game) at the gaming club the other day, and it was great! 😀
If I could get some more people interested in my area, I would LOVE to get started in X-Wing!
Not sure it will be this month but I have the new genre/era itch – going to try saga but still weighing up french indian war and american civil war as options further forward.
I have gaming ADD. You are an enabler, Sam 😉
I’ve been looking to get into Bolt Action, steampunk games like In Her Majesty’s Name and ancients based games like Saga at some point. I’m waiting until Salute before diving into another game or set of minis to buy, so I can try out the demo games on the day. There’s some games that have free rules that I keep forgetting about, so I’ll have to check them out too. I’ve also wanted to check out boardgames like the CThulhu based games shown on here. The only barrier to playing them (other than having even more minis to paint) is… Read more »
Are there no gaming groups nearby?
Well this is an interesting article. I started my wargaming in the Warhammer Fantasy world. I always had an interest in history as well. So that’s where I headed. However that is not to say I avoided Sci – Fi when space hulk first came out I loved playing it. Never proceeded into 40 though. But my aim this year is to enjoy more sci Fi hence the DZC weekend 🙂
I’ll need to find an odd genre – as I seem to have them all covered – or rather I need to find time for the games I have … so I did join the DzC bootcamp – just to get one more game …
Sam, couldn’t agree more. It’s well worth venturing out of our comfort zone from time to time. In the last few months I have ventured into playing Kings of War and now have both Dreadball and Deadzone figures in my painting pile thanks in large part to the enthusiastic coverage on BoW. Being devil’s advocate for a moment, I think one of the reasons for the popularity of both Bolt Action and FOW is that both strongly resemble certain well known Sci-Fi rules which makes the transition easier. However, for those of us coming from the other direction this makes… Read more »
Battlegroup and CoC are indeed more “accurate” games (and so that’s my preference, personally), but I can’t deny the appeal and fun (and success) of BA and FoW. 🙂
CoC? Ooooh Call of Cthulhu!
Oops, that’s what I get for not being specific. 😀
I’m just waiting for my Batman Miniature Game rulebook to show up.
After 20 years of 40k and squarebase, D&D, pathfinder a little warmachine and hoards, I just built my first 500 points of early-mid war Germans for bolt action… now where did i put that feldgrau paint…
In two days is the “Tactica” here in Hamburg. One of the largest and best tabletop conventions in Germany. I hope to get in a game of Fields of Glory Napoleonics, as I’ve read over the rules and it seems very interesting but very complicated.
Anyone else at the Tactica?
I’m moving from 28mm to 20mm (1/72) to play large battles, with a plan to play Bolt Action for starters, but I’m now looking at building a Republic Roman army and navy, there are some reasonably priced plastic kits for Roman Galleys, to play Hail Cesar. Moving to a smaller scale will take me out of my painting comfort zone, as I don’t generally paint anything smaller than 28mm. Now that I’ve started looking at possibilities at 1/72 scale Im tempted to go into historical periods I wouldn’t have considered before, such as Napoleonic’s and American Civil War. I also… Read more »
I keep looking at in her majesty’s name as a steampunk alternative to general gaming its my favourite genre but i am totally missing out Malifaux was to diluted of the genre and whilst Wolsung is awesome looking but i am worried it is the same.
In Her Majesty’s Name is an excellent game system and one which I think would meet Sam’s request for rules which make the transition to a different genre easier. You control the background and can add or subtract those elements you want to get the flavour you like. So you can add more steampunk if you want, focus more on the Victorian Sci-Fi element or simply use it for what I call “Boys Own Adventure Gaming”. You can stick to historical weaponry if you want or add in more exotic fare like arc rifles. It is also well supported by… Read more »
Should have said one of the big advantages of IHMN is that you are not tied to a single figure range, but can use any figures which give you the look you want from whatever source you like.
Just play Flintloque, Slaughterloo or Panzerfauste, you’ve got the best of all worlds then!
