The Waffen-SS were the elite combat arm of Hitler's personal bodyguard. They were always in the thick of the fighting, scrapping across the Eastern Front against the Soviets in often brutal circumstances. When the Americans and British were moving to invade Normandy they were returned to France to help build up the defences of the Germany army in preparation.
When the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy it was up to the Waffen-SS to throw them back into the sea. Obviously, that didn't often work out but that didn't stop them being a rather immovable bastion which the Allies found tough to shift.
Flames Of War Waffen-SS Pre-Orders
As well as the book which contains all you need to run yourself a Waffen-SS force, you'll also be able to pick up a new Starter Force to get you going.
Waffen-SS Starter Force // Flames Of War
This set comes with a bunch of big chunky tanks, some specialised infantry and also a lot of quick-moving options for scouting the positions of the enemy. You've also got some serious artillery backing up your force, making this a pretty elite army to tinker with.
As well as that, you'll also be able to pick up a swathe of additional miniature packs throughout the month of August. This is just a snippet...
SS Panzergrenadier Platoon // Flames Of War
Sd Kfz 231 SS Scout Troops // Flames Of War
It's always good to see lots of additional infantry getting dropped into the mix, especially if you like the idea of elite troops who are focused on getting stuck right in! If you're interested in more of what they have to offer then check out the pre-order list HERE.
Are you going to be taking up the Waffen-SS as your force of choice?

A great looking unit, Ooh more puma’s nice.
Starter set looks epic
Great looking sets with lots of options so a fab way to get started
Although I do play FoW WW2 Germans, on personal principle i don’t play the SS.
I may however invest in the book to see what I’m missing.
“It’s always good to see lots of additional infantry getting dropped into the mix, especially if you like the idea of elite troops who are focused on getting stuck right in!” …I’m going to go out on a limb and say most people who saw Waffen SS weren’t quite so excited to see them get stuck in to their work. I’m never going to play Waffen SS and won’t criticize those who choose to. It’s a personal preference (I play Fallschirmjager). That’s not my issue. I think the word choice on this article could be better given the subject matter.
same reason I will never play british paratroopers
Why is that if I may ask ?
bloody sunday massacre
I get it, but I think that if I used massacres as a yardstick I wouldn’t be able to play any WWII scenarios… or almost any historical conflict for that matter. All of the allies killed their share of POW’s during the war, and shortly after the German surrender, as did the Russians — but the victors write history of course.
You could always play the German side at Arnhem and get your licks in…
Fallschirmjager massacred a good percentage of the Cretan population.
First off, my point was more about the wording of the article than what the Waffen SS did.
Secondly, I know there were lots of massacres and realistically nobody has clean hands in the German armed forces of WWII. Fallschirmjager were not created to be what the Waffen SS was created to be. It’s a personal choice and I personally don’t want to play them. I’m not excusing what the Fallschirmjager did. Just looking at the greater context of the war.
I’m pretty sure you not embracing the ideals of the Nazi party when you are commanding your Fallschirmjager. It’s the last thought in your head as you enjoy the hobby. And I’m pretty sure everyone else is not embracing the ideals of the Waffles SS when they put their toy soldiers on the table. One is not more honourable than the other. They are all bad.
Some context on why it isn’t the last thought in my head. A former very close friend who I started wargaming with actually became a neo nazi and we had to stop gaming together because I won’t stand by that. Another member of our group had feelings of admiration for the SS and their combat prowess that eventually grew into comments that made our wargaming group so uncomfortable we had to ask him to leave the group. Maybe I should’ve mentioned those experiences earlier but they left a bad taste in my mouth. Both of those guys loved seeing SS… Read more »
I’d be looking to use this box set as 21st panzer, or Gross Deutschland division personally. I already have an SS army for bolt action and would like to play something different at this scale. I’m also toying with the idea of going falschrimjager but I do like my tanks ??
I like their vehicles but their infantry always look like Gumby. No excuse for that these days with all the CG out there.
