Get Started in Flames of War with Open Fire!
August 24, 2012 by brennon
If you've ever been tempted by Flames of War from Battlefront Miniatures then this might be the set for you. To get you started in the Third Edition of the rules they have created an absolutely epic 15mm Starter Set, Flames of War: Open Fire!
All the miniatures in the image you see above come inside this kit as well as a few other bits and pieces too...
"These two forces give you a British armoured squadron with support from some fearless US paratroopers to deal with the German grenadier company defending their V1 launcher (yes that is in the box as well) with the aid of a StuG platoon and some anti-tank guns. As well as the plastics, the box comes with a quick-start booklet, terrain, tokens, dice and a complete 296 page copy of the rules for you to dive into after you have played a few games."
Let's take a closer look at some of the models in this set...
The Box Contains:
∙ A 52 Page Full Colour Quick Start Guide. ∙ A 296 Page Full Colour Complete Rulebook. ∙ More Than 118 Finely Detailed Miniatures. ∙ V1 Flying Bomb Terrain Feature. ∙ Cardboard Terrain. ∙ Tokens. ∙ Objective Markers. ∙ Army Lists. ∙ 20 Dice.
While the box set is aimed towards beginners in the hobby all of the miniatures inside are compatible with the Flames of War range. The models themselves are looking stunning and will be the perfect launching point for anyone interested in getting involved with historical wargames.
You can find this set in your local gaming store or on the internet from the 20th October 2012.
Start saving the pennies now folks, shiny syndrome has struck!
Is this truly one of the best Starter Sets out there?
Plastic Infantry??? looking nice
plastic AFV- look nice but I assume they are the same ones that where a pain to assembly from Achtung
A really good product by the looks of it
Wow, this is a good looking set. I’ve always wanted to try FoW, I may look into purchasing this.
Those plastic infantry look superb.
Okay, those plastic infantry look better than most of the metal infantry that’s come out from Battlefront recently. I want more of that. It’s nice to see a good starter set for Flames of War. I’ve always kind of felt like the starters were kind of lame compared to many other companies’. The force composition is a little odd, but it’s still something you could play with for a while before diving completely into the cash sink of minis and books. The cardboard terrain and markers are a nice inclusion too. Any official word on price? I’ve heard rumors of… Read more »

Here’s the Wayland link that is also on the right hand side of the story. It’s in Sterling but should give you an idea bud.
BoW Ben
That is a very reasonable price to pay for a starter set in fact if you split it down the middle with a friend we’re talking peanuts.
We don’t have any FoW players at our club I may suggest this set for a club purchase.
This may be the ‘easy in’ BF need to get more gamers interested…
Great looking product at a competative price , (yes Ill probably get one too!)
Now that’s a starter set I am interested in – hope there will soon be more details about the miniatures included!
Seriously impressed with the plastic infantry!
The Plastic tanks from the Achtung box were awful to put together, really prefer the metal/resin offerings from Battlefront
I agree that the plastic tanks in achtung were a pain to assemble without gaps but im still very tempted by this.
1) Ruddy hell I only bought Achtung! starter set the other week. Wish I’d waited now. No troops. Frustrated sob…
2) Yes the tanks were rubbish to put together in terms of the gaps that got left. The Sherman tanks especially. The Stugs were ok though.
I know its annoying to have paid for achtung just to see this released but if you can stomach more plastic tanks then combining achtung and open fire gives you 2 quite cool forces around 1000 points and for around £70 (maybe better if you shop around) its a great way to start flames of war, also you may want two copies of the rule book as they fall apart really fast.
Wow, the detail on the infantry looks superb. What turned me off of the old Open Far was the lack of infantry, but this one looks great!
I saw that the War Store has this set listed at US$63 as of 10th October which seems like a screaming good deal. This might get me to break my minis stalemate and pick up yet another game.
