Hobby VLOG: Oil War Part Two
February 25, 2019 by johnlyons
John takes us through the army lists he has been concocting for his Oil War project!
Taking a look at what has been built so far for both the Iraqi and Soviet forces, John talks us through balancing the two sides with Hinds and Shilkas but also about paintwork we can maybe expect with these two sides going forward.

John also clarifies why exactly we're talking about Iraq and the USSR squaring off instead of saying Iraq and Syria.
Without a calculator could you add 34 and 18? Some say it's impossible...

Really shows how cheap Iraqi stuff is if you can field that on top of the 5 leopards which are half your points cost . Haven’t not read oil wars yet don’t know too much of the story but when they released the t 62 cards for it last year the little story that accompanied it had Soviet’s moving into postitions the Iranians had prepared for them to face off against an Iraqi/ us force
As memory serves there was a picture of captured and burnt out armour after gulf 1 i think that included hummel’s and wespes, I’m assuming they’ve been sold them early on by the soviets and what they’ve sold to iraq has probably been offered to Syria also,
having never played team yankee I have no idea how that would work rules wise, but i wouldn’t complain if the points need balancing more if the sovits brought along indigenous reinforcments
Oh yeah! Panzer 4’s and all sorts of “junk” was sent out there. I think after ww2 everybody was scrambling for arms and settled with anything they could get. The prime example is France keeping a Battalion of Panther’s into the 1950s
Colour schemes sound good. Like the idea of the older tanks being more weather beaten than the newer ones. Very interested in what you do for the table.
desert … obviously 😉 (plenty of that after two desert based bootcamps ;-))
Maybe an oil field at the edge ?
A burning oil field would add an extra wow factor,
Burning oil field gets my vote, that would be epic.
I couldn’t possibly comment….though i am enjoying the process! 🙂
Looking very impressive! It makes sense that you’re considering Soviets when you explain the point about wanting distinctive colour schemes / looks. My point about Syria should actually be split into two. The first was a question as to how the Soviets are going to reach Iraq. I don’t know the story to oil wars but shipping tanks to Syria and driving them across to the northeast seems pretty plausible to me. The second and distinct point was about the choosing to fight in a Middle Eastern theatre with a force that’s very like what you’ve been fielding in Europe… Read more »
On your point of Syria having Russian forces coming. I replied to Porkchop below on my thinking of it. Since he pointed out the Iran/Iraq war would still be in mid-flow.
On your second point of “why bother” you are entirely right. But as far as I see in the rules any list-building options, taking Syrians is really only a change of paint. Which is why I leaned more towards the difference in schemes rather than who’s country they belong to.
@johnlyons – I see your point and it makes sense. My understanding is that Oil Wars doesn’t include rules specifically for the Syrians (I get the impression that it’s just Iran, Iraq and Israel – is that right?). For the sake of an entertaining game you do want to feel that you’re pitting different forces against each other, but I would assume that (if Oil Wars does give rules to Syrians) they would try to differentiate them from the Iraqis in some way.
They have a guide for playing Syrians in Oil War. Which just changes some options in the supports and the like. 🙂
looking good john.
You mean the Soviets would be painted a nice soft pink. Remember alternate timeline, the Soviets used pink tanks. I’m an alternate timeline historical expert, trust me on this. ?
*screams in alternative timeline* …you’re not wrong. 😛
Hi just wanted to point out that the IranIraq war was in full swing in 1985. Team Yankee only starts to diverge from real events in about June, I think.
Now you can set the narrative any way you like but it would be most plausible that Iraq would be kitted out by NATO with French gear and armour. France has been selling arms to Iraq since at least 1981.
Ok, you want to use German armour. Very cool. You might also think about having Republican Guards units.
BTW I love the idea of one colour Soviets.
This is where my lack of knowledge on the timeline comes to bit my rear. So the Iran/Iraq was is in full swing. Then ww3 kicks off. I would imagine the Soviets and NATO would then use this conflict to further their influence on the two nations. Even if Iraq was being sold arms by France, NATO wouldn’t (or probably wouldn’t) consider that a decidingfactor of who they would send to support. I guess narratively you could say the Soviets and NATO would more than likely send a battlegroup out to guide, support and bolster their respective allies in hte… Read more »
