March 7, 2017 by brennon
If you're looking for a jumping off point as you get into El Alamein and Flames Of War 4th Edition then you might want to check out this boxed set from Battlefront, War In The Desert, which gives you a taster of what lies ahead as you begin gaming in World War II.
Inside the box, you get a number of tanks to get you going including one plastic Panzer IV, one plastic Panzer III, one plastic Grant, two plastic Crusaders, two plastic Tank Commander sprues, Flames Of War 4th Edition mini rulebook, one Flames Of War ‘Start Here’ booklet, two Terrain Cards, six dice and eight Unit cards.
This is effectively a quick start guide to getting into Flames Of War and playing games in the new edition. You'll be learning to play and getting instruction on the mechanics as you go through a series of different scenarios.
If you're interested but don't want to give in this then gives you a nice taster of the world of Flames Of War. I think this could be a good idea and let you know whether or not you'd prefer to focus in on the British or the Germans as your next step.

For $35 this is a great start! Feels a tad bit like a TANKS starter though, wish maybe it had some artillery or a couple Infantry stands to make it feel a bit more varied. Still, can’t beat the price!
Yep, TANKS in a box.
The TANKS game by GF9 comes with 2 US tanks and 1 German tank for like $25 retail? So $10 more for 2 more tanks… the GF9 tanks are more late war (generally) while I guess this 4th Edition of Flames of War is starting mid-war… but I too kinda am surprised by the lack of artillery or infantry just to separate it from the GF9 version (even if same models)
FoW and Tanks are both from the same company as battlefront own GF9. Tanks is a quick play version of FOW using the same plastic tanks. The Tanks game is getting the same mid war tanks later this year (April and May I think)
great boxes love the details they can get on the models now.
I think I will be giving this a whirl 🙂
I have a gaming buddy that got me to try out 3rd Edition FoW and I just couldn’t get into it…
that said, I’ve just read Team Yankee and am tempted by this… not sure if the lack of infantry is a plus or a minus though… I did hear on one of the interviews that they are planning to do more infantry going forward… and curious to see if they do all Plastics for the Italians… so that’d be nice!
Seems like nice boxed set to get.
I play late war but i’ll certainly be picking this up 🙂
$35 for 5 tanks and a spin UTA into the v4 rule set. Pre-order done. Wathching the past three days of the boot camp make me think i will enjoy the changes.
*spin up into*
I just hope this A5 booklet is better quality than the V3 one. XD
So tempted to get into MW with v4
I think this is a great way to get into the game as it limits the rules you have to learn, and most people will always have tanks in their forces, but not everyone will have infantry. I hope they do an add on with the infantry and artillery rules. that would be awesome, Start small, this will also help when teaching a friend how to play as you have basic rules and scenarios which will help you find new partners to game with.
The unit cards look more like the TY cards. The ones at the boot camp looked very different.
