Flames of War FTW: Utilising Advanced Tank Rules
July 3, 2015 by warzan
It wouldn't be Flames of War without some tank battles and in this edition of FTW we delve into more advanced tactics as its time to utilise the special rules of the German and British tank squadrons.
Watch The XLBS Show
If you're a Backstage subscriber we have even more tank tactics for you as Warren and Dave bring the Americans into the fight and tackle Sherman Jumbo Tanks.
How do you get the most out of your tanks?
Another bloody marvellous episode!
Unfortunately this episode includes some mistakes or misconceptions on using the given terrain board. Hedges provide in FoW normally both advantage in form of concealment and also disadvantages as they hinder movement (aka Bogging checks).
The shown two examples would have been more appropriate on a board without so many hedges.
Strictly seen you are right. But as always the most important thing is to talk with your opponents about the terrain on the board. I’ve seen hedgerows played as “only” slow going (reducing your movement wiithout bogging checks) a lot and I would definitely suggest it on a board like this with so many hedgerows. Especially when both you and you’re opponent running a tank company. Otherwise you will only role bogging checks the entire game.
I hope they got something else for Germans other then StuG’s. Those are lovely little bastards but there is so more for Germans.
Still having to download videos to watch them – nice set-up (as always).
So basically…. use your special rules. Or even more accurately… use your enemy’s rules against them.
You also see the difference between trained vs veterans (starting with a 3 instead of a 4 to hit). I play Americans, Germans, and Fins and definitely the Germans will have the upperhand but the Americans can negate that with a solid maneuver plan (which is historically accurate also). The Fins have no real armor capability, but are good at killing tanks from ambush.
Good job Gentlemen. 🙂
Which briefing is it that has AT15 17pdrs? The only ones I have seen are AT14 or 13.
In marketgarden and Nachtjäger the firefly has a AT of 15 (challenger A30 also which has a 17 pounder)
Re the gun tanks rule, as I understand it any hits that you the elevate to be applied to the gun tanks must all be applied to that type of tank. Eg if you roll four hits, make three successful gun tank rolls these must all be applied to the gun tanks even if u destroy the gun tank with the first round the other shots would be lost and not allocated to the other platoon members therein lays the tactical decision of the gun tanks rule, do I concentrate fire and try to kill the gun tank or follow… Read more »
Love these vids, useful reminders and help keep my FOW interest alive between games. Would love to see some tutorials though for the other FOW games, WW1, Nam and AIW….
Great vid guys
Will you guys ever do a vid that involves the Churchill or Cromwells?
