Flames of War hit Vietnam
February 24, 2011 by beerogre
Many people have been wondering where Flames of War could possibly go next... well now you have your answer...
Yeah... Vietnam baby!
Look at some of the cool stuff that's going to be available.
From their announcement:
Last year in Wargames Illustrated we tried something new and let a charge of enthusiasm for an exciting period, led by Pete, culminate in our first attempt at adapting the Flames Of War mechanics to other periods. The result was a wonderful success and with so many people getting excited about both the idea and the period we realised that it could not simply be a one-off. What we have decided to do is bring you Vietnam part II this April with a following instalment each year. The rolling plan has us adding to the forces, models and how it can be played. This has made us realise that Flames Of War Vietnam has become our second period and it will receive ongoing support.
Phil takes us back to a Vietnam in WI282 to bring you the armour and new helicopters for the US and the big guns for the PAVN. Rather than just taking up space in WI we decided to include the 48 page intelligence handbook as a bonus with WI so that everything you need to play is now its own book as well as being free. Phil being the excellent chap he is did not only get you new lists but included everything from the first outing we made to Vietnam so this booklet really has everything you need to play.
Does anyone else think that FoW will be moving on to the modern Middle Eastern conflicts next?
BoW Andy
peronally I think these may sink like a grot attached to a treasure chest in the US but I like them as for middle east may still be a bit raw maybe the faulklands first
GOD I LOVE THE SMELL OF NAPPIES IN THE MORNING!!!!!
im would be happy for this if i new someone that either was a fan of flames of war or a fan of nam
Used to play a lot of skirmish vietnam. Only way I found to capture the nature of the battles and make it tense for the us player was to run the vc/nva as a ref controlled force. That way ambushes actually worked, where the enemy forces were coming from was unknown. H&I was a random, but powerful tool. We liked to play that the us had all the power, but understanding where to use it, was the secret to winning.
Using the same system we could play with the VC on the table and the ref controlled units were US special forces. The VC player had to find the marine recon or A-teams before they were hit by air strikes or the air cav turned up.
Good point @tinracer
Interesting that i was chatting with Battlefront (senior guy) about 2 years ago about doing a Nam based version and he asked ‘Who would want to play as the VC?!??!’
Seems they may be willing to find out now 🙂
Who wouldn’t? They gave the US more trouble than they bargained for, and everyone loves an under dog.
I would think the VC would be a very approachable side to play if they get the models/rules right
Playing the VC is fun, we had completely different victory conditions.
The VC had to get to a decided US body count to win, and could loose as many as it took. The US player win was based on the scenario – get the patrol of the map, protect the firebase, sweep a village for weapon stores…
It makes me wonder if their little magazine supplement they did a while back was them really just testing the water for a proof of concept? It seemed a bit daft at the time, but with a few token model releases I think it tickled a lot of peoples interests. Having said that it could still sink. Hell i’ll make a good tabletop game… Cold War! where you just sit opposite someone with both of you having a red telephone and nothing happening. Yea!! Ok off that random tangent.. ¬_¬ I have no idea either. Vietnam never really interested me.… Read more »
Another way they could make it work is if the Commies were shown as counters/tokens (space hulk style, but the VC player knew what the counter was) and move them around until the US has LOS? That way the US player could be setting up his units for a frontal attack and then they could all work out to be small units or even blanks? And the 2 tokens on the flank turn out to be the main force.
Just chasing noises in jungle…
Cool.
I just got back from Nam…
Dagenham.
Not so sure it would bomb (please forgive pun) in the USA now Tauboy.
Attitudes have changed afaik.
This looks very interesting but already oversubscribed to games systems 🙁
Oh well have plenty of SEA USAAF and USN/Marine kits in 1/72 to keep me occupied in theatre for a while.
Back when I was in High school, my teacher would tell me about when he was in Vietnam so I actually am very interested in this game. I would probably play it but I don’t know of anyone where I live that plays it, and I have a hard enough time trying to find people that play 40k. If I could convince my friends to play, I know at least one would play VC so it would be hard to get a game going.
This is actually making me interested in playing FoW. Now if only there was anyone near me who played as well…
Peter Pig do a set fo rules called ‘The men of Company B’ which are friggin’ ace and really capture the whole Vietnam feel.

I really like this. I can’t find it on their site though. Has anyone got a link to where it is announced?
Anyone think the next step should be a what if cold war scenario with M1 abrams and T-80’s or T- 72’s squaring off, that would be brilliant
