The Other Side By Wyrd Games Live & Funded On Kickstarter
December 14, 2016 by deltagamegirl22
Merry Christmas to all the Malifaux players out there as the first day on Kickstarter has been a successful one for our friends at Wyrd Games with their much anticipated, mass battle tabletop game - The Other Side.
The game is not only live on Kickstarter, but is already funded...so bring on the stretch goals!
The Factions Of A New World
Who would you choose to play as? Factions are labelled as Allegiances in the Other Side, and at this time you have four very different Allegiances to choose from including...
The King's Empire
Abyssinia
Gibbering Hordes
Cult Of The Burning Man
They couldn't be more different, and they all look amazing which translates into, "How do I choose?" Better start allocating your Christmas money to make that decision a bit easier.
The Game & Miniatures
This game is designed for players to get a feel for what life looks like on the other side of the breach (see what they did there?), and offers the ability for you to get to experience the steampunk world with a higher miniature count to capture the feel of other larger scale games that some of us enjoy, plus the gorgeous look we've come to expect and appreciate from Malifaux models.
You can find out more about the game in the video linked at the top of this page giving you the full on Demo Game for you to get stuck into. It's a big epic thirty-minute video but it will run you through the basics of a game.
Essentially you will choose Commanders for your games and the number of them will dictate the scale of game you get into. One Commander leads to a smaller skirmish whereas three or four might lead to an epic battle. You then make up your forces, spending points as you wish with the likes of their huge Titans taking up a big chunk of the points.
The game changer with this project lies in the fact that these stunning models are preassembled! Yes, that means you are that much closer to being able to play right out of the box with their 32mm scale models on their new bases which collec them together into their groups as you'll see here.
They have explained that there will be options for picking up unassembled miniatures further down the line but this just seems to make sense with the way the industry is going, especially for finely detailed models like the ones you see here.
The miniatures here have been painted up by the awesome Den Of Imagination and they really are stunning looking.
It's looking like it will go down a storm right now and things are hotting up as the campaign continues to gain traction.
Stretch Goals
So far they've already popped their way through a number of goals and the rest will fall soon we imagine.
We shall see how far this goes but we can see this appealing to Malifaux players and those who are fans of bigger mass battle games.
What do you think?

Oh dear. I already spent more than my quota on Kickstarter in the last few weeks
Mythic Battles: Pantheon, Kingdom Death: Monster and now this. No chance, I’m literally drained out. I’m just hoping there will be not stretch goal with Polish faction box…. heh
Bad timing for me, would have liked to back this but hit my kickstarter limit on Mythic Battles and Tales from the Loop.
Me too. As pretty as this is, my wallet snapped shut at the very thought of a KS so soon after MB:P.
Being initially really excited by TOS I am giving this a pass for now. Having backed MB:P and holding on to my 200$ Black Friday KD:M pledge, another quite costly KS is beyond my means atm.
Some KS are simply too good not to back if I have an interest in them. MB:P was one of those, simply an amazing amount of free content for a basic pledge. TOS KS does not give me my much incentive to actually buy into it instead of waiting for the reatil version.
The models look great, the price is a bit rich, though I guess 100$ for 25 or 30 pre-built models isn’t bad at all. My concern is how simplistic the game looks in the demo video- in essence, with the exception of Pen vs Armor, it’s stripped down Malifaux, with fewer unique rules and fewer game elements- 3-4 fireteams and mechs vs 7 or 10 unique models. Unless there’s something amazing that’s not been touched upon in the demo vid at all, there’s no real reason to pick TOS over MFX?
This looks like a really nicely done game. It’s seems simple enough that younger players could be taught how to play easily but is deep enough to be fun for more advanced players. However, I agree with @golonka that there really isn’t enough offered to make backing it on KS make sense when we can pick it up at retail on release and save the money for truly fantastic KS projects.
Yeah it’s overpriced for what it is. Shame really I’m a huge Malifaux fan but this so far looks like a miss for me.
My feelings on it are broadly in line with other commenters here. I don’t doubt that the pledge is an accurate reflection of costs, but unless you know someone else who wants to play and will pledge then you’re looking at $198 plus shipping for two very basic armies, even more basic than the ones in the demo video. If the total climbs high enough then stretch goal freebies may turn those into more playable armies and make the pledge better value, but until then it can’t compete with KS minis boardgames for a $ for $ basis, and so… Read more »
That pretty much sums up my feelings about the KS. It’s appealing but for the life of me I can’t figure out why everything is so expensive. The $100 starter boxes (which are $125 MSRP) have about the same content as a Wrath of Kings starter, which retails at $70. Then, there’s that questionable “Retail Only” $50 pledge which has 2 of those starter boxes. So, the boxes are effectively sold at 25% of add-on cost… wow. They’re probably selling them at zero profit to help promote the game, but it’s a good indicator that they could go much lower… Read more »
So glad it has funded. I don’t have the spare cash at the moment, but I’ll love picking these up at retail.
As someone who is just getting into Malifaux and enjoying it, I was looking forward to this but to be honest, now it has arrived I think the factions look generic and nothing grabs me in the same way Malifaux did. So I will stick to my kingdom death and mythic pantheon pledges and give this a miss.
