What’s Inside The New Warhammer Age Of Sigmar Launch Box?
May 17, 2024 by brennon
Now you've seen all of the Games Workshop miniatures coming for the Stormcast Eternals and the Skaven in the new Warhammer Age Of Sigmar launch box, it's time to dive into the rest of the contents of the box and the ways that you can play using the books and more.
Skaventide // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
Shop Warhammer Age Of Sigmar @ Store.OnTableTop
The main thing is that the new Skaventide set comes absolutely packed with miniatures and books. There are twenty-four Stormcast Eternals miniatures and fifty Skaven ones. You'll also get the terrain and all the books, accessories and more that you need to start playing games. More on that later. Make sure to check out the links below for more images of the miniatures...
New Stormcast Eternals Miniatures
New Skaven Miniatures
There are some great miniatures for you to choose from, even better if you dive into the new edition of the game with a friend and split the box. All of this lays the groundwork for you to start diving into the new edition in a number of different ways.
Spearhead
One of the new ways to play is Spearhead which is effectively like the Combat Patrol of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar. Small armies do battle on a battlefield that could well fit onto a coffee table and see who is victorious after about an hour of play. The new Skaventide set comes with the miniatures to run two new Spearheads for Stormcast Eternals and Skaven plus all of the bits and pieces you need to play the game.
Spearhead Set-Up // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
A portion of the miniatures shown above can be used to make the Vigilant Brotherhood and the Gnawfeast Clawpack. Each set of miniatures has been balanced against the other and whilst the core of the rules remain the same between regular Warhammer Age Of Sigmar and Spearhead, they have condensed some aspects to make it quite easy to pick up and play.
The new set comes with the Spearhead book, Fire & Jade, which covers battles in the realms of Aqshy and Ghyran.
Spearhead: Fire & Jade // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
Inside the book, you'll find all of the current Spearhead/Vanguard sets and rules for using them in the Spearhead game mode. You'll also get your battlepack of rules and cards for playing the game, introducing the way to use battle tactics and commands. Capping things off are four pieces of terrain which should lay the groundwork for your initial adventures in The Mortal Realms.
Spearhead seems like a decent mode of play for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar but the proof will be in the pudding. I like the fact that they seem to have playtested it more and I hope that it still remains tactical and replayable, especially on those smaller tabletops.
Core Rules & General's Handbook
For those wanting to dive deep into playing Matched Play games of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar and more, the new set also contains the full Core Rules and also the General's Handbook for 2024 through to 2025. This will be your guide to playing your tournament games and pick-up games at stores for the next year.
Core Book // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
The Core Book has been updated with a new look at the lore for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar through the lens of mortals. Most of the time, we get a very godly view of The Mortal Realms but this time, the design team have worked to try and give you a look at what it's like for the Average Joe wandering the streets of Hammerhal. I like this and alongside the roleplaying game books from Cubicle 7 for Soulbound, it provides eager narrative lovers with a good way to get to grips with the world.
You'll also note that for competitive players the General's Handbook Cards give you all you need for playing out games with your friends using points. You'll find all of your battleplans, battle tactics, rules, terrain layout suggestions and more. It's a good way for seasoned Warhammer Age Of Sigmar players to just get going.
If Warhammer Age Of Sigmar follows the rules of older editions, the Core Rules will be available free soon alongside the Spearhead rules for each faction. That means that at a basic level, you can play by just snapping up a Spearhead boxed set or using old miniatures to try the game out. Diving into Skaventide however, will give you a leg up and some great options for going beyond that initial entry into The Mortal Realms.
What do you make of the contents of Skaventide?

It looks a decent bundle of stuff in the box, but I’d only be interested if the price is low enough.
Looks to be £160 from Games Workshop so somewhere around £140/150 depending on your retailer.
Last time I bought a GW box I got 20% off, but that seems to be less common now, closer to 10%.
I’m not really a fan of stormcast as I see them as space marines, some of the models are nice. Rats are easy to paint with contrast and that rattling gun looks fun.
More interested in spearhead really, so if they sell that book on it’s own I might just buy that… although I suspect you need the ‘fluff book’ of a billion mini pics and 10 pages of rules.
All the Spearhead stuff + the Core Rules should be free on their website so you’ll have access to that without spending a penny. Well, apart from the minis.
Once again I get to dodge the AoS bullet.
Complete miss as far as I am concerened, hate every single model in the box. LoL.
So, thanks GW, you have really saved me alot of money.
Why then, did you bother to comment?
Lol.
I agree with @slayerofworlds – and why would his punk rock comment be worth any less than that of @bubbles15 ?
I also dislike this box – the Skaven are cool, the Spez Muhreenz in Fantasyland are AWFUL.
I do like the skaven miniatures but I’m not I’m not invested in the age if sigma lore. Probably because I’m old and want them back in the old world but the new crazy weapons guaranteed to kill half your own army is always good
It’s just not very compelling lore. Especially when compared to the old world.
This is typical commentary from older people who haven’t actually READ the lore in any detail just skimmed it and thought OH WOW THIS TINY SNIPPET DOES NOT COMPARE TO THE TWENTY TO THIRTY YEARS OF LORE I PREVIOUSLY INGESTED As an older person who actually has read it, I can tell you that not only is it compelling but considerably more innovative. Much as I love the Old World, it IS derivative beyond belief (and that’s the point). Meanwhile AoS is essentially taking a much bolder approach that while still derivative, has a lot of new ideas. What most… Read more »
This is a good point. One should not criticize without first exploring the topic a tad more than superficially. I’m not terribly into high, wild fantasy but I did find compelling the decision to turn each of the 8 winds of chaos into their own realms. This was a cool concept. Admittedly, GW did not give Old Worlders reason to. From my understanding, the early AOS setting had very little in the way of lore, compelling or otherwise. So if one had given it a look early on, one could easily dismiss it. And pushing Sigmarines did not seem to… Read more »
This is very true. I initially bounced off, HARD. The issue GW had from the look of it was trying to appease people with old lead armies by including everything they could, and that just felt ‘off’ when supported with what was at the time a small amount of lore. It kind of clicked when I realised the ‘Sigmarines’ everyone was complaining about are pretty much the OPPOSITE of Space Marines. Space Marines are, straight up, fascist parodies (or at least warnings). They are intentionally unpleasant, essentially monstrous perversions of humanity that exist to kill and destroy. While there’s definite… Read more »
I agree with this. I initially bounced off AoS lore, but am now quite taken with it. You can set anything you want in it. I’m quite taken with the concept of Shyish, a realm of the dead. That’s an interesting take on Space Marines and Stormcast as well.
Here, here
Where?
Salamander Space Marines. Boom. Argument ruined. Green Marines Matter.
Ah yes, that ONE CHAPTER.
I mean there’s bad faith arguments, and then there’s that.
Unless they are Dark Angels. Secret naughty boys club that they are.
I think I got a bingo.
Exactly this. There wasn’t a good enough reason to turn the page. Which is why the Old World stuff is selling out like it’s the hottest thing since sliced toasted bread. And threatens the end times of the End Times AoS.
Good riddance to Spez Muhreenz in Fantasyland, I say.
I mean this kind of miserable old dude whining is what makes GW properties toxic.
It’s just a trash attitude, pure garbage.
You’re entitled to like what you like, go for it. But try not to stink the place up for everyone else because you think you’re entitled to dump on other people.
Where did I say I hadn’t actually read any of it? Nowhere. Typical response from AoS fans who can’t handle people preferring Old World. Your last paragraph is very telling.
Where did I say you hadn’t actually read any of it? Nowhere. Typical response from grumpy oldies who have an inability to communicate their personal opinion without making assertive generalisations. And yes, my last paragraph is very telling – I’m an older person who doesn’t whinge and whine, gatekeep against younger or progressive people, or make bad faith arguments in a pointless quest to preserve my long-gone youth in a lemon scented cloud of nostalgia. You’re more than welcome to prefer the Old World. Claiming AoS is ‘not very compelling lore. Especially when compared to the old world.’ is a… Read more »
Nah; just because someone prefers the Old World to the new Age of Shitmar doesn’t invalidate their idea of the vision being compelling, or not.
That’s like saying one has to love Taylor Swift’s new stuff just because it’s so compelling, whereas her old stuff isn’t. When, obviously, it’s super compelling.
Which Taylor Swift fan are you? You’re clearly a fan of the new work. A tortured poet society member, no doubt!
Oh look, another old dude who can’t read properly!
Get some new glasses old feller so next time you can respond to what is being discussed.
Those new Skaven models will look amazing in my Warhammer The Old World army. ?.
Seems like a solid box, honestly spearhead appeals more. I was of the mind I wanted to give it a good go having abandoned 3rd, and grabbing the lauch box. However, while I don’t think any of the models are bad, none really excite me, 40 clanrats to paint certainly doesn’t. The warlords beast looks like it is that skinny to keep it easy build.
Then the price, £160 (pre-discount) is right on the tipping point for me. So pondering, could be in part warlord currently have me far more excited with punic wars and v3
The figures are fabulous looking painted up.
Seeing as all of the Stormcast I bought in the last launch box I bought has just been retired meaning I can’t play with them after such a short period (including covid when no one could play) you will forgive me for passing. Fool me once – shame on you GW, fool me twice…..
