SITREP: Welcome To The Ops Center With Oriskany
February 1, 2019 by stvitusdancern
SITREP Podcast is very excited to bring you the first episode of the Ops Center hosted by Jim "Oriskany"
In part one of four, Jim takes you through the background of the Sinai War of 1956. He delves in the background and tactics of this war and how you can take all of this rich information and use it in your games, no matter what form you play!
Let us know what you think and what battle we should explore next.
Nice work Jim.
Thanks very much, @grimwolfuk , and thanks for the awesome green title slide graphics you made for this! 😀 Appreciate the support and the talent!
“War by cease-fire,” I like it. And interesting note on the Eisenhower-Khrushchev connection. This was in the middle of the “We will bury you” days, banging his shoe on the table at the UN.
Thanks very much @pslemon – Kind of ominous, given the news of the day (the US no longer abiding by the INF treaty in Europe). I mean, the Russians haven’t been abiding by it for decades, and the EU / NATO isn’t lifting a finger to help in this regard. But we might see a slight return to the old European arms race with regards to intermediate range ballistic weapons. 🙁
Great stuff – look forward to pay attention once I get off work
No no no! You’ve got to get your priorities straight @rasmus You’re supposed to pay attention to the article… I mean video article… Not some boring job ?
For the record, the script on that video was something like three articles worth of text. 😀
@gladesrunner sadly the work is what keep me in toy soldiers
Awesome. Have a great weekend! Looking forward to the game of Darkstar tomorrow! 😀
Wow! This is great. All the information of an Oriskany article without the hard work of reading. I can actually just listen to him and I feel smarter.
Well no, hold on, @gladesrunner . I’m just trying to fill in background so people might get more interested in modern wargaming, a little more serious and grounded material. They say narrative is an important part of wargaming, and they’re right, but before you start blowing up Archers and T-34s with M50 Shermans and AMX-13s, it helps to at least sketch in a little of the REASONS all this is happening. And other buffs on the site might tell you, I had to leave out a lot of stuff (Straits of Tiran, more tension on the West Bank with Jordan,… Read more »
Excellent video, Jim! Love the historical presentation and images, as well as the practical gaming advice.
Thanks very much, @umbramancer – yeah, future parts might pivot more toward the actual tabletop wargaming aspect of it – this one had to not only sketch in the background for the 1956 war, but the Arab-Israeli conflict in general, and the whole Ops Center series. 😀 Next one will get “hot” much faster, and hopefully be significantly shorter.
Really nice summary of ’56, gives an insight into the plan for war and the execution. Looking forward to more of this.
Questions for the future episodes;
Do you think the ’67 assault through mostly the same areas was easier or harder for the Israelis?
Did the Egyptians learn from ’56 or did all the shiny new Soviet kit and defensive doctrine they were using lead them to feel over confident in their defences in ’67?
And thanks for the shout out, glad to help.
Awesome, @damon , thanks. And yes, it’s definitely a SUMMARY of the 1956 War. I mean people have literally written books about it, and of course we had to “leave off” Operation Musketeer entirely.
And no worries about the mention, sir. Seriously, those games wouldn’t have happened without you, and I may have stepped on my XXXX there regarding the different variants of early Israeli Shermans. 😀
Great questions! Perhaps we will get to them in the next episode! 😀
Great work Jim. I am now waiting for the War of Many names ….the 73 war …The Yom Kippur War, The Ramadan war, The October War….
Thanks very much, @tacticalgenius, and yes … I am actually looking forward unashamedly to the 1973 War as well. All three names will be presented, but Yom Kippur will probably be the “standard” simply because it’s what people are familiar with (and that’s what they call it in new Team Yankee Arab Israeli War book).
But yes, I get you, and different viewpoints WILL be presented, especially the Egyptians. And, eh, if I can be honest here (shh … don’t tell anyone), 1973 is probably my favorite, with 1956 taking second place).
Yom Kippur is interesting because there are no walk overs for the IDF in ’73.
Absolutely. The AT-3 Sagger Missile and “Black Monday” (8 October 1973). Then of course, the Valley of Tears.
I bet theirs a few people wish the had some of that dessert heat at the moment in the us and uk.
nice picture of the old UK antitank @oriskany
a great start to an interesting topic. @oriskany
Thanks for the comments, @zorg ! Yeah, those Archers were actually pretty badass. Their defense in the games was too weak (open gun compartment, old Valentine chassis, thin armor) But they did have 17 pounders in them, which have them a long range and a hard punch. In my games with @damon , we found that if we could make the Israelis come to the Archers, and if the Archers get the first shot, they can put a hole in an AMX-13 or even up-armored Shermans all too easily. 😀
So I just sat down in the ol’home theater and watched this gem up on the big screen. Well done to all involved! For the record I have subscribed to the channel that produced this informative video and look forward to what comes next. I enjoyed all of the content in this episode and really perked up when at the tail end the narrator included information on playing out tabletop engagements based on this info. I’ve always wanted to dive deeper into the wars faught by the IDF. I’ll use miniatures so the info about using battlefront minis and data… Read more »
Thanks very much @templar007 – and you actually bring up a very good point – thanks very much to @grimwolfuk for his help with the green graphic layout (w/ Podbean, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter) and of course super thanks to @stvitusdancern for the some help with the audio (my voice needs all the help it can get) and for coordinating with the rest of the OTT Staff for getting up posted here today. I promise the 1967 and 73 war will have some more tabletop wargaming discussion. There literally isn’t a 1956 Sinai War miniature game that I’m aware of,… Read more »
Great work can’t wait for the rest.
Was Israel concerned about an attack from Syria or any of their other neighbours in that area. Having a lot of their military in one area must have been a tempting target.
Thanks very much, @elessar2590 – and happy weekend! Great question! I can answer partially now, the rest I might save for the Q&A segment in the next video? Regarding Israel’s other neighbors … okay, we’re talking Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. Lebanon: Not really a threat. In fact, Lebanon’s never been a threat to Israel not only because of its demographics, small size, and internal conflicts and struggles. Lebanon’s TERRITORY, on the other hand, can be problematic once it gets settled by groups like Hezbollah and the like. Hence we see Operation Peace for Galilee in 1982, etc. But these weren’t… Read more »
@oriskany nice start there jim I don’t do modern gaming but from a learning point of view I thoroughly enjoyed it looking forward to the next one. who knows I may just start this modern lark….. from a personal perspective I am hoping you cover the Aiden conflict as my father fought in that one in the royal marines just before i was born. id like to understand a bit more as I know he lost his best friend, (a couple of rounds to the chest) which still colours his views regards all Arabs as he calls them to this… Read more »
Thanks very much, @wolf320f – I think Aden could definitely be added to the mix. The next three parts will round out this Arab-Israeli War series (1967, 1973, and 1982-present), after that we’re building up quite a list of interesting topics and requests. Vietnam is on the table, Gulf One, Gulf Two / Afghanistan, Ukraine, ISIS, and one thing people have definitely been asking for is the Falklands. So if the Sitrep keeps getting support, views, and comments (both here and on our other outlets), we could be at this a long, long time. There’s plenty of information and wargaming… Read more »
well Jim ill certainly keep watching
Thanks very much! 😀
@wolf320f my father was in Aiden to he served in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Northumberland Fusiliers).
@grimwolfuk my old man hasn’t really spoken much about it other than a few passing comments and a brief chat when I myself was deployed to the gulf on a warship. All I know for certain is about the loss of his mate, the Beverly and ive seen a few slides of burnt out vehicles. Oh and the story of how he lost his front teeth from my mother…… Apparently the marines were used to rolling off of their camp beds at any strange noise coming up from underneath them where their SLR was nestled ready for trouble. He came… Read more »
This is great. Well, if there’s a lot of interest in this conflict it might move up a couple steps on the potential running order. I don’t want to set any list of future topics in stone, outside of the initial Arab-Israeli Wars series, but rest assured this on is definitely in the “upper tier” now. Thanks!
Excellent video! Looking forward to the next episode as I’m really not well read on this topic.
Thanks very much, @neves1789 . Since they say narrative is such an important part of wargaming, and so many people have become involved with certain franchises / systems / settings because of the narrative, I’m hoping to put out just enough narrative and wargaming ideas to maybe get some people interested in the Arab-Israeli Conflict, or modern-era wargaming in general.
Great video Jim. I am looking forward for the next one.
Awesome, @caledor2 – glad you liked it! 😀 The next one deals with the Six Day War, which we hope to have out hopefully in the middle of February. If you want, you can also support us on Podbean, Facebook, and YouTube, and Twitter.

So well put together Jim, another high quality product to add to your impressive library- thank you for taking he time to Produce and share it ?
Thanks very much, @bengal6 – I was actually a little worried the format wouldn’t be that engaging or interesting. Appreciate the encouragement and kind words. 😀
Well done Jim, very interesting. Looking forward to the next instalment. A list in the show notes to further reference material for those who would like to look a bit closer at these conflicts would be much appreciated. Once again we’ll done that man
That’s a good idea, @lug45 . We’ve also talked about the possibility of adding army lists to help people start on gaming in the conflict in question. We’d just have to start by selecting an game system. For this one, GHQ Microarmor and modified Flames of War / Fate of a Nation would probably be the best bets. For purely historical information, the best “umbrella” source is “The Arab Israeli Wars” by Chaim Herzog. Also, anything published maybe Marten van Creveld (“Sword and the Olive” is a good start) is solid gold, not only because of historical data, but also… Read more »
Thanks very much
Great work Jim!
Thanks very much @intelligentmistertoad . I’m glad the commander of 29th Independent Brigade and winner of the Desert Rat award approves! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Excellent stuff, look forward to the next one.
See @gremlin ? I told you I wasn’t really leaving. 😀 Just “closing the range on the objective from a different approach angle,” is all. If there are any post 1945 conflicts you’d like to see resolved, just let us know. 😀
I suppose as a Brit it has to be the Falklands.
You are not alone in your request, @gremlin . 😀
Fantastic stuff Jim.
Perhaps in another vid you could give a little of the European involvement and also the roll of the UN on the ground.
I think it was the first Irish evolvement 2 observing officers.
Keep it up.
Thanks very much, @goban – Modern War Magazine did a great article more specifically about the French and British involvement vis-a-vis Operation Musketeer (Issue 37, Nov-Dec 2017). The issue also discusses Joseph Miranda’s “Operation Musketeer” by Decision Games. I didn’t mention it in the video because again, it deals more with the European side of the issue. Modern War is a positively fantastic publication I have recommended in our podcast several times, not only because of its content, but because it deals with the whole “wing” of the wargaming industry that doesn’t really get covered here on the site. It’s… Read more »
Really thoroughly enjoyable. Massive coincidence that not 5 mins before listening to this I booked my honeymoon to Egypt! Not sure the new Mrs Wheeler will be too keen to go visit the old battlefields though 🙁 And i’m not sure my copy of “Fate of a Nation” would make for good pool side reading either lol.
Glad you liked the content, @davebpg . And congrats on the nuptials! And just tell the new “Ms. Wheeler” that “Chinese Farm” is an exotic Asian garden and spa resort. You can act disappointed when you get there.
*GASP!*
“Honestly, love … I had no idea this was a tank graveyard!”
🙂 🙂 🙂
