Happy Weekend!
First… to let everyone know the proppa pronunseeayshun is Min-ah-tore. 😛 😛 😛
Nailed it. Min-a-tore.
Yep. With an A.
I don’t care how it’s spelt.
That’s how you say it 😉
@enginseer wins.
As someone who has worked for both the major London Auction houses, I concur! Min-o-tor from the Minoan (Min-owan) culture, who lived below the palace of King Minos.
Min-os or Mine-os ? 😉
Some might say that this was quite the labyrinthine question to ask the community
Happy Burns Night Everyone (who’s celebrating it)!
Aye laddie!
Any excuse for more Haggis
another blur of week and the only reason i feel sane……its weekender time of my favorite addiction

It’s the Weekender!
Man that week went fast.
I was wondering when the Awards Process was going to kickoff. Glad it’s continuing on.
Yep, happy to see it back and what the community picks out.
Boats in the Crusades? Hulks and surprisingly apt Cogs
@Warzan Try this link https://www.naval-encyclopedia.com/medieval-ships/
I pronounce Minotaur as Feckin hell it’s a cow with a dirty big axe
Third Crusade (1189-92) included fleets that sailed all the way from England and Spain carrying Richard I and Phillip II.
First crusade (1096-99) was mostly overland apart from some east Mediterranean sea movement that was the one reliant on Venice and Genoa.
I remembered the type of ships after the show thanks to Medieval Total War!
GW are pretty “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” with this ident… if they had of went the digital option for the music people would have criticised that – saying they are doing it on the cheap, lacks ambition etc. Personally, i think they have learned from trying to do it on the cheap with that travesty of an Ultramarine movie. Also Warren hit a nail on the head when he said “noone in our industry could tell the difference” – people who have bought or painted Space Marines aren’t the target audience of this… this is to… Read more »
I loved that they went full on with an orchestra and a choir. There’s nothing to say they actually paid every single musician who performed on the track – as a musician, just imagine the prestige and personal satisfaction of not only playing on a Warhammer track, but the entire experience of playing in such an amazing studio with so many musicians and singers. I would have paid GW to have been a part of it! Sometimes we do things for more reason than boring old stupid money. They reckon (you know, the collective “they” who know such stuff) that… Read more »
If workshop didn’t pay those musicians I will go to Lenton myself to bulldoze the place down 😉
Even though they can be pretty cuntish with their behaviour, I think paying musicians in “exposure” is even a bit much for GW, more fool anyone who did it for free. If they did, I’ll be behind your bulldozer with a flamethrower to make sure no-one escapes alive!
(Please note I am only joking about killing them, I’ll be happy with maiming).
Very true, they can’t please everyone. I think that they need to hit stories like Inquisitors, Guardsmen and the human element first to get people invested.
As for the Warhammer TV series I remember them saying Game of Thrones was $10 million per episode My guess for the episode guide will be Episode 1 Marines kill some stuff Episode 2 Different coloured Marines kill some stuff Episode 3 Some humans are having trouble killing stuff so the Marines arrive and kill the stuff Episode 4 Marines get in trouble for not killing enough stuff Episode 5 The newly arrived Lady Religious Marines kill some stuff Episode 6 Naughty Marines ask the Marines join their gang as they have more fun Episode 7 All the Marines kill… Read more »
Thankfully, I think they’ll try and avoid this if they want to do it properly.
It’s the Weekend! Time to test my new glasses on close-uo work.
As for expectations or hopes for the 40k TV thingy, those who know me here probably aren’t expecting much from me…
I hope, through the use of allegory, it’s plot devices reveal the perils of believing that those at the heart of government actually have the interests of the majority of the populous driving policy and behaviour; but rather how the agents of the elite are driven by self-perpetuating self-interest. As for their record on environmental issues…
40K – Where every, single, character, ever, is a mary sue 😉
@warzan Were you thinking of me by any chance @22:30 when you stumbled over GW’s name while introducing yet another GW news item?
I whole-heartedly support, and look forward to, the new segment introducing small companies that don’t otherwise get a look-in!
lol
With Minotaur, both pronunciations are correct, the Oxford learners dictionary, derived fron the full OED, inckude both on this page…

My-no-tor
Good luck doing actual good 40K Content that’s faithful to the setting. We should all be prepared for some major retconning and changes in the next few years even beyond the whole Pappa Smurf and his Xenos side piece nonsense we see today. Anyone who’s not Human must be killed on sight. If you’re a psyker you’re enslaved immediately by almost every faction. There is no “Well we’re fighting them but we respect them” they’re literally your racial inferiors and if you disagree with that the only punishment is instant death. That’s 40K and it’s amazing. But is that going… Read more »
The same would apply to the RPG’s they’ve done … and I kind of doubt that everyone plays it like that.
I’m not that sure if the books are that black&white either, but then I haven’t read any in part because it is exactly that grim darkness that I don’t like about this setting TBH.
Whether or not they can convert it into something that still is recognizable as 40k to the fans will depend on how much those fans are willing to forgive. And we’ve all seen how bad (some) fans are when it comes to that part of the equation.
They don’t need to massively retcon the setting to make it PC, they just have to acknowledge that the setting is a deeply disturbing place. In other words, have the Imperium exterminating all opposition in glorious technicolour, but don’t portray them as the ‘good guys’. Either tell the story from the perspective of people who are a bit more good and are more relatable and have them interacting with the fascism of the Imperium or make the nihilism the point of the show. Have the closest thing you get to good guys being forced to be evil because literally all… Read more »
I think Justin almost said “are they mango…” here’s a photo of trees in a mango swamp.(other photos are avaliable)
https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/mangrove-tree-picture-id589053334?s=612×612
I think you both mean Mangrove swamp trees rather than Mango…
There are plenty of trees all over the world where the roots have grown around old ruins etc, and sometimes around other tree stumps or trunks that have then rotted away leaving a cage effect, or where the soil has been washed away. Checkout Anghor Wat temple as a well known example.
If you need time to know how to pronounce it’s probably going to sound something like :
“That’s a mino*splat* …
I hope you’ve remembered to bring a ball of string and tied the start of it to the entrance … as you’re going to have to run.
I do like the idea of someone doing a Theseus & The Minotaur style scenario table to play Mortal Gods with.
I’m not sure it’d work in a wargame, but otoh … a minotaur would make for a cool ‘wandering monster’ in a skirmish scenario.
Guys the NEXT button to start the survey isn’t working when I hit it.
Warren, you’re looking for the Mediterranean Nave, which can be found here: https://www.naval-encyclopedia.com/medieval-ships/
No printable models anywhere, nor even others. You could use this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3129092 and adjust size, add two masts and a bow.
As for the 40k TV adaptations, I’m happy with Eisenhorn. They would absolutely have to stick to human stories though, with a small scope. Big war and battles as background will fail as surely as Space Marines or even Xenos. Moving on, they might do Necromunda, the Horus Heresy from the perspective of people like Oll Persson or better yet, John Grammaticus. A Rogue Trader could also deliver an awesome background and interact with aliens and outlaws on the fringes. I heavily doubt that Angels of Death will be made for the big public, that’s for fans, you will probably… Read more »
Thanks so much for this I have been really struggling to find a suitable ship!
Mine-Oh-tore
The main type of 12th/13th century European ship for transporting people and animals was a “Cog”, I shit you not!: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(ship)
Minotaur (Mine ah tour)
Warhammer tv could be good, as long as they spend money on it, and not make something as dire as the “Ultramarines Movie”
I am pretty sure that it is not the shape of the shield that makes it a shieldwall design but how it is gripped.
Also that minotaur (pronounced the Oxford way) probably did not make it himself, a creature that size is exactly what you would use to break shield walls and the shield he is carrying is probably the only whole one left after his last battle.
Loved the dvd “extras” after the false ending!
Mine – A – Tour
Minotaurus!
Also cutting the rantings and ramblings is… weird…. oO
Well, Ben is back on Dwarves..that is awesome. I went and bought the Hardcore Dwarves. Thank you for giving them some time. I really enjoyed this episode.
Love the Warren-optional stuff at the end lol
I sort of disagree with the 40k movie being mainstream.. look at “The Witcher”..i didn’t love it but I never played the games or the books so I’m probably an outsider, but really super popular
The Witcher as a book series was popular (in Poland ) *before* it became a very successful videogame series made it popular in ‘the west’.
And I’m pretty sure the popularity of series like ‘Game of Thrones’ has been part of the reason why it was allowed to be a tv-series at all.
I think that a lot of us forget how small our view of the world really is.
There is more (fantastical) fiction outside our traditional Tolkien/D&D inspired variants.
I am liking the Dwarves in a different genre aye – still quite like Elves though haha
I say My-no-tore but am aware it’s not correct. That’s what I first came up with reading Greek legends as a child and it stuck 😛
Minatour depends on if you are saying it like a Greek or a Latin. In Greek its ‘Μινώταυρο’ pronounced “mi-no-tau̯ros”. In Latin its Minotaurus pronounced “my-no-tau̯rʊs”. Stephen Fry does 2 excellent books on Greek Myths and pronounces iy “Mine -Oh-Tore”.
Those ships are either Cogs – (they look a bit like protypes for Christopher Colombus’s shipswhich are called ‘caravels’, but flat bottoms) or Hulks (which is a longer wider Cog).
Dictionaries (English dictionaries at least) don’t necessarily describe how a word should be pronounced, only how a word is currently pronounced, and perhaps how it, and it’s precussors, have been pronounced. According to Wiktionary the original Greek word ‘Μίνως’ was pronounced more along the lines of the English word ‘mean’, and the current pronounciations are pronounced as both ‘mean’ and ‘mine’.
Here is David Mitchell’s take on saying the word ‘valet’ correctly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iRN8iJDi_I .
The first thing i thought when i watched the new Games Workshop film preview is that the people making the film have already had to compromise and dumb down on whatever ideas they had, assuming they are the people who made those well received fan films, or in any case someone brought in because they a vision of some sort. EDIT: I took a second look and i’ll add in the word ‘may’ to ‘have already had to compromise’. Anyway, visually it’s good, very good in parts, but the script is hammy and dumbed down to the max, e.g.: Someone… Read more »
