I’ve played loads of games in my time and have many fond memories, but I’m generally happy for them to remain as games of my past. One game I would like to play again is Raw Deal, though as an OOP CCG which no-one I know plays anymore, that’s not likely to happen.
@Sam – grab a copy of Epic (any version by Armageddon is my favorite last incarnation) and enjoy GW rules at its best
http://www.net-armageddon.org/
I’m a big epic fan too. Still got all my armies, I started on the Epic Space Marine (2nd box set I think). This was the one with separate expansions for Squats, Chaos etc. Managed to get all the expansions and have armies for each.
Stay sharp, trust no one and keep your laser handy !
paranoia could be a great laugh.
Trust no-one? Why do you not trust the Computer, citizen? Only traitors would not trust the Computer. Are you a traitor, citizen?
haha did you guys ever try the online version of paranoia? It was basically a chat room but good fun!
I think I will always keep some stuff to play certain games from my past, whether they are out of print or not. Some games just seem to connect to each of us.
Here’s a few more that’s not on your list, but a blast to play.
HeroScape
Gorkamorka
Legends of the High Seas
De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA)
Star Wars D6
DC Heroes
Ghostbusters RPG
Chill RPG
HeroQuest
Warhammer Quest
Torg
Awful Green things from Outer Space
Judge Dredd Board game
Gunsmoke
Any FGU RPG
FGU ruled! Hard to find and very expensive – back in ’83. When I was posed to Aldershot a couple of years later and found Esdevium Games on Victoria Road, right at the top,if my memory is correct. They used to advertise in WD and stocked all manner of weird and wonderful things. They had every FGU game. The only one I never got around to buying was P&G.
Very complex though. Combat was a struggle sometimes, but after Traveller, the first rpg I played was Aftermath.
Wow, I remember that shop when my dad was posted there, I spent grand national winnings of 15 squid on a Heroes of Legend board game
FGU still exsists

FGU – Merc , what a fantastic concept. Still, there Are a few issues with it, but its forgiven! I also have a soft spot for Space Opera, completely OTT ruleswise, but still, what a game!
Also, anything by Tom Wham, his sillyness and randomness warrant special mention, that man is a game god!
I LOVED Space Opera. I GM’d an awesome game of that back in the late 80s. Such great memories.
Have recently got into confrontation/hybrid and am sad I missed it in its day but it has been fun starting a collection. I play retro computer games and the same applies to both, if you enjoy a game age is not a factor.
I’m a big fan of 40K 2nd edition, probably play more games of that than the current one if I’m honest, and Necromunda. The campaign system is somewhat flawed, but its such an atmospheric game, I never get tired of it. That’s probably my main point about Age of Sigmar, I’m not entirely sold on it as is (the models are nice though, and for GW the starter is really good value in that regard), however, there are another 8 versions of Fantasy to play. GW may stop supporting those games, but they will always exist. I do understand this is… Read more »
Snit’s Revenge is always good for a laugh.
The Herbert Family refuses to give the rights to Dune for a game since that old one was released. It was rethemed as the game Rex.
Battlefleet Gothic
Family Business Card game is great as well
I think i’ll always be a Blood Bowl player! Aftermath rpg, Morrow Project, Call of Cthulhu, V&V, Dungeonquest (still play it), Man O War (awesome game) and a dabble with WoD back in the early 90’s. Tried restarting my interest in rpg’s a few years ago and it didn’t work out.
A good source of wargaming/rpg nonsense is Scribt. Heaps of modelling books and magazines – usually have a trial month too.
Wow! Morrow Project, haven’t heard that mentioned in an age! Still have the game though, not sure why, will I ever play it again, or more to the point, find some others to play it with?? ; )
I don’t have a copy – wasn’t mine. Don’t suppose you want to ‘trade’?
Good to have some news from the teacher. I agree, but i think new games have better game mechanics and of course a bunch Of new minis.
Most of the new games I see these days are still using a lot of the mechanics that were being used 30 years ago. There isn’t much new out there rules wise
Just like life itself, tends to go in cycles, and the older you get, the more ‘cycles’ you see! (Unless you live in Amsterdam, and everyone gets to see them!) ; ) Sorry! Couldn’t resist it!
I just bought Warhammer Fantasy Battles 3rd edition (1987) on eBay.
Well done! Spread the word to others, so that those, seemingly, disaffected people out there will maybe realise, you can play whatever you like, it is always about ‘your’ choice, not having to sing along to the ‘one hymn sheet’
When I despaired of 8th ed I decided to give 6th ed a go. It was the only edition I hadn’t played and it had a rep as one of the best. The 8th ed armies were compatible so no new minis were needed, and the rulebook and army books were very cheap to pick up second hand. I managed to get a sum total of zero games in (and it remains the only edition I haven’t played). It turns out that just deciding you want to play it is not the same as getting the opportunity play it. Heck,… Read more »
SAM, you missed fantasy 8th edition on this list, lol
I left the hobby late 90s, early 2000s, and despite the odd dabble, got rid of most of my stuff. Getting back into the hobby, I totally regret that decision, but I kept a few games that were close to my heart. I still play BattleTech, have been since the mid-90s 4th edition box. Necromunda still lives in my loft, and I keep promising myself to take it to the club one day. Space Hulk was my first GW game, and I still have my 1st edition set with Deathwing, Genestealer and the compendium book. Full Thrust, which I still… Read more »
All of these, fun and enjoyable games to play, in their own right!
If you have any 15mm sci-fi figs, try Gruntz 15mm! If you are the type of player who enjoys stat cards for each of your units, then this is right up your street!
…Stargrunt! First resin stuff I ever bought was GZG barricades back in 1991-2. Their alien race was great – so were their vehicles. Brilliant rules too.
Full thrust and Stargrunt and Dirtside are all excellent games and now all free to download as well from was.gzg.com

Still play blood bowl,
I did have 64 teams,sold a few.
Now down to 40 teams,
Awesome game, built a stadium for it,
And a ship for blood bowl at sea rules.
The guy who ran a club we used to go to built a stadium – mental. Spiked turnstiles, A vampire doctor with mummy stretcher-bearers and ‘toilets’ for re-roll counters. I asked him why. “For when your rolls are shit” was the reply! He even made a Bloodweiser blimp.
I still run a Blood Bowl season every year. Used to go to small tournaments too. I don’t have s much teams as you do, though. I have 6 teams (included a 3-in-1 undead/necromantic/khemri one) and I just gathered all the miniatures I needed to make a 5-in-1 elves and amazons one. The next event on my calendar is a Death Bowl match (4 teams on a pitch madness).
Loved Man O’ War, it’s what got me into the hobby. Have a soft spot for Necromunda aswell. Time for trip down memory lane me thinks.
There are so many awesome games that I played that GW dumped; Mordheim, Warmaster, Warhammer, Necromunda, Warhammer RPG (although that’s FFG too), Warhammer historical, Man o’ War, Battlefleet Gothic, Warhammer Quest, Blood Bowl, Space Crusade, Advance Space Crusade and I wish I’d played Gorka Morka. The up side is most of these are now in an electronic version and I don’t have to suffer the constant price hikes of minis, the difficulty of finding opponents or the cost in time and money of painting. I kept all my minis even though I sadly rarely get to use any of them.
BFG was one of the best GW games ever.
Back in the day I used to grab almost anything by GW. I had three or four editions of Warhammer Fantasy, 40K 2nd edition, Necromunda, Gorkamorka and the older Epic games; Space Marine and Epic 40K. I was too young to appreciate most of it and it all ended up being dumped or given away. It was only when 40K 3rd edition rolled around that I started to take the games seriously. I still have some of the old rulebooks though and it’s a lot of fun to look back through them. I like to go through my old White… Read more »
WD was a great magazine. Don’t know how far back you go with it, but in the old days they even used to write/print articles for other peoples games! Radical or what?
Dune was picked up. Kinda. FFG picked up the rules, reskinned it in the Twilight Imperium universe as the game Rex, and streamlined the rules.
Happy memories of Man O’War with brother. Can’t beat a bit of nostalgia.
How about quality though? You think the games were better then? For me, it is way better today. Not a technological junkie, no mobile phone or facecrap and I don’t even watch tv, but gaming is so much better with the internet. In the dark ages you had to write a letter to a company, with added postal order, to get a list of what they made – usually no pictures either to hide the bad quality of the minis. Allow 28 days for delivery, etc, etc. That is if you could even find these companies in the first place.… Read more »
Technology has definitely improved things for us. Aside from the ease you can now discover new games and order minis, having quick access to a large community of gamers is a huge bonus for issues with rules or general gam advice.
And the net has done wonders for the hobby side of gaming. Tips and tutorials have never been so abundant.
Not sure I ever played B17.. Struggled through it maybe but never played
