Community Spotlight: Starship Battles, Looted Walkers & Fantastical Terrain
June 15, 2018 by brennon
We stop into the Projects again this week and see what people have been working on. We have some very different approaches this week, showing off finished work, lots of WiP and even some table builds as well.
As always, everyone featured here wins themselves a Golden Button for their efforts and gets added into the hall of fame!
Darkstar Project by oriskany
We're looking at something a bit different to begin with here for the Community Spotlight. As we said, the focus of the Projects section is vast, opening up chances for painters, hobbyists and even those looking to develop their own games. That is exactly what oriskany has been doing with his Darkstar project.
He has been building up his game from the ground up, looking at concept art for the various ships and developing the rules through a series of test games too. The range of options he has been looking at for the game is vast as you'll see when you check out his project on the link above.
This amount of work, detailing each of the ships and the gameplay options for everything, deserves some recognition and it would be awesome to see how this all comes to fruition.
This is something we hope that more people are going to do. I love the idea of people beginning to plot out how their games grow here, offering up downloads for people to get stuck into, and using the community as your sounding board.
It will be fun to see where this goes next, and of course, make sure to chime in and talk to oriskany over on his project about the progress for Darkstar.
Looted Primaris Dreadnought by grotlobba
Focusing in on something which is at the WiP progress stage at the moment. grotlobba has been tinkering away on this amazing Looted Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought. This Ork Mek has had a lot of fun with this particular walker.
There has been so much love and attention put into this build. Firstly, cracking open the Dreadnought and dropping one of those alternative Orks into the mix must have taken a lot of effort, but its when you look towards the rest of the model, with the additional weapon components and more, that you start seeing this come to life.
grotlobba has gone into a lot of detail about everything to do with the process over on his project page, showing off how the individual components came together and where certain parts have come from.
To find out more make sure to go and check out his project page, but in the meantime, I'm sure you have loads of questions. I love the amount of extra effort that went into making sure that those bolts all looked authentic! It really adds to the piece.
Fantasy Terrain by soldado
Last but not least we look towards some wonderful terrain from soldado who has been working on buildings and more for use in his games of Burrows & Badgers.
All of the above buildings have been picked out to represent a down and dirty looking Fantasy world from the kingdom of Northumbrya.
Not only has soldado been showing off the final products, which are looking fantastic, but also some of the progress that went into building them, especially pieces like his river section and bridge design.
It is great seeing terrain projects like this come to life, inspired by the worlds we play in. The terrain is looking awesome, but also the painting too, which puts these pieces up onto the next level as you get a very cartoony, vibrant world to play around in.
What Are You Painting Right Now?
Every week we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects, it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it!
We don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran of the brush, everything you do inspires us to create more and more content together!

not only three fantastic projects and worthy recipients but also three incredibly diverse projects. It’s great to see that the new project system really lets people explore the range of activities that the hobby encompasses more so than just looking at one facet.
Top work folks
agreed 🙂 it’s wonderful to see such a wide range of projects 🙂 it’s a big old hobby we have, and it’s always great to see the different things people are up too 😉
wow. every singe one of this projects is mind blowing.
Stunning work folk’s love the work on the projects.
Thanks very much everyone for the kind words, and thanks once again to the Beasts of War team for the great Golden Button honor! Congrats to @soldado on the scratch-built terrain and @grotlobba on the kit-bashed mek!
Although hold on a sec … Fantasy world of Northumbrya? Wasn’t Northumbria an actual kingdom in Dark Age Britain during the Viking Age?
congrats, the game is looking very promising so far 🙂 I’ll be keeping an eye out on the project blog 😉
Thanks very much, @motioninpoetry – I’ve recently heard from my gaming group and I think we’re on for some more gaming on this tomorrow! 😀
Oooh Yamato-esque ship combat YES!
Long live Leader Desslock! 😀 😀 😀
woohoo, cheers guys. Thanks for the comments and well done to @grotlobba and @oriskany
Fantastic job all! I am especially pleased to see Oriskanys project here…it’s such a great take on a ‘futuristic’ naval game. I seriously hope someone comes along and picks up the modeling line 🙂
Thanks very much, @aurorainbag – I’ve been tinkering around with some more advanced drawings / design concepts for some of the ships, I hope to have some of it posted soon (wrapping up other BoW projects first). 😀 Glad you like the project! 🙂
will be cool to see the new concepts 🙂 what scale were you hoping to make the ships ?? 🙂
Well, to be honest, it’s not a miniature game. We have 3D playing pieces, but they’re just that, playing pieces instead of any kind of scaled miniature. As you might see on the project thread, each hex is 180 kilometers. On the table the hexes are 1.5″, so technically the table is at a scale of 1 : 4.7 million. Such is naval wargaming, especially in space! I’m always tinkering with more drawings. After six years the USS Oriskany has been re-drawn and re-designed more times than the bridge of the USS Enterprise. 😀 The spreadsheets that drive the design… Read more »
ha ha, yeah I get what you mean, I was more talking “mm” scale 😛 like e.g. 50mm ships maybe 😛 even a 30mm mini is around 1/60 scale (even though there is no industry standard for what 30mm scale is, some measure to eyes, some to top of the head 😛 ha ha) anyway, I think most people agree true scale doesn’t really matter when it comes to a game, as long as the game is fun 😉 anyway, it might be worth exploring the idea in the future 🙂 or maybe even just using card playing pieces kind… Read more »
I won’t lie, I’ve always had the idea of a 1:500 or so scale model of USS Oriskany in the back of my head (about two feet).
Some amazing work on the site once again. Congrats all, not least the Ork walker, which looks a ton of fun.
Grotlobba your conversion is amazing well done.
