What Is Sharp Practice? Introduction With Rich From Too Fat Lardies
October 26, 2017 by dignity
Rich from Too Fat Lardies has joined me in the studio today to introduce me to Sharp Practice a large skirmish game at the end of the Black Powder era, roughly on the end of the 18th Century.
Sharp Practice allows you to create smaller armies in which you can still participate in large-scale period battles.
Perhaps you need to aid a carriage across the field or defend against a vanguard force before the main army arrives. This game focuses you towards those smaller, narrative stories.
What do you like about this game?

Excellent game that I’ve been playing a lot lately. You really can make Sharp practice what you need it to be. If you just want to throw down minis and roll dice it works great and if you want to drive off the dastardly enemy while picking up women and getting some loot and fame along the way all while putting on a pretentious aristocratic accent the game facilitates that perfectly.
Lots of great options here for fun games. I’ve read too many Sharpe novels though to try anything else first, so it’d be Peninsula war for me.
Looks great. Be keen to try this out for NZ Wars. Brits against Maori Pa.. or Maori attacking Stockade.
I would love to see the Irish War of Independance (Black & Tan war) and the Irish Civil War.
OK no muzzle loaders but very few machine guns.
bolt action works very well for the Irish wars,
Perfect for all us wargaming Butterflies who lead busy lives
Looks very nice, did not get the middle bit of the video 14 min about wich terrain you should/can use, would love to here more how the game works, mechanics wise then what gamemat would be good to use.
Check out the recent Sharp Practice article that came out earlier this week. Head over the Historical forum “Sharp Practice After Party” and ask any questions you have.
Yes I thought that was really strange and a complete waste of time as well
I need to get some other games up to speed first but I am definitely going Sharp Practice for F&I.
The Danish – German war of 1848
Or going a bit off the wall and do a “Last Samurai” Japanese civil war
well remembered @dignity I just assume you all tune out once I start waffling.
But yes Sgt Bernard “More than twice a hero” mcCabe
His two most famous actions was planting the colours on top of the rampart at Sobroan and spiking the guns at Lucknow.
Sharp sounds like it could be a winner, I’d need the residencys walls built along with the buildings as well, can I borrow @lloyd for a while? 😉
Good to see more material on Sharp Practice and hopefully there will be a battle report soon. Justin’s focus on terrain was a bit distracting but if anyone wants to find out more on how the game plays TFL have published a good series of videos on YouTube introducing the game.
