Community Spotlight: Shambling Survivors, Boarding Parties & Spectacular Space Marines
October 6, 2017 by crew
We're back with some more awesome Community Spotlight goodness this week. As always, share your work in the Hobby & Painting Forum over on Beasts Of War and you might get picked for a Golden Button!
This week the entries have been picked from the What Are You Painting Now? thread which was set up by the ever awesome caladors. If you would like a chance to get featured with a Community Spotlight, make sure to make your own awesome thread within the Hobby & Painting Forum for the rest of us to see!
Walking Dead: All Out War by norgalad
Leading the way for us this week we have norgalad who has painted up a whole bunch of his Walking Dead: All Out War miniatures from the awesome game by Mantic.
As well as painting up loads of the Walkers from the game norgalad has gone through and painted each of the characters as well. I like how each of the Walkers work well as a shambling mass but the spots of colour throughout help to break things up and add some colour to the tabletop.
Here we also have some of the characters mentioned above with Rick & Carl...
...as well as the awesome Lee & Clementine from the Telltale video game. The paint jobs are on point and the style allows you to immediately pick them out on the tabletop. The bright colours are of course refreshing to see in anything tied to the post-apocalypse!
The choice of basing style is good too as it works well to frame the models. It shows just how the texture paints and effects work from Games Workshop too with that cracked earth look. A great set that I'm sure is wonderful to play with.
Black Ogrun Boarding Party by lawnor
We now move onto lawnor's work as he paints up the final Cryxian models for his Warmachine collection. It's great for someone to get that sense of satisfaction as they come to the end of a big project. Check out his Black Ogrun Boarding Party.
If you go over and check out the post on the link above you'll see that he's been very regimented about getting his models painted and I think it has paid off as these miniatures are looking superb.
The darker colour of the skin has been shaded very nicely allowing for a good contrast against the brighter clothing which marks them all as different. While a lot of the models are in the same pose, I think the different colours help to define a bit more identity throughout the set.
I like that the rims of the bases, with their facings marked on them, have been done in a subtle way too which means that they still feel like characters and troops on the battlefield rather than just gaming pieces. The numbering system in gold on the back is well done - I love me some roman numerals!
Fleshtearer Space Marine by avicenna
Last but not least we turn to the world of Warhammer 40,000 again and take a look at the work of avicenna as he painted up this fantastic Fleshtearer Space Marine with some incredible attention to detail given to every facet of the model.
The aspects of the model that really stood out for me were the ways in which the shading has been done across the armour and the glint of light off the different segments and the amazing detail that has gone into the face! Look at that fancy space vampire!
Some stunning painting continues as you circle around the model looking at the chipping and beaten look to the shoulder pads and the wear and tear on the gun too.
I think you'll agree that this certainly shows off the Fleshtearers in a very good light indeed. I'm used to seeing them with a much darker red scheme but I think the lighter design here, almost verging on pink in places, works very well.
Even the back of the model looks great (that one's for you Lloyd). Getting black to look like black and yet not just be a void on the model is also impressive and something I still struggle with.
