Read The Battle Of Waterloo As It Happened With The Telegraph
June 18, 2015 by brennon
The Telegraph has put together a rather comprehensive report on how The Battle of Waterloo unfolded 200 years ago. If you've ever been interested in the tactics of the day then you can follow it, a little like a blog or live feed, to see how events unfolded...
The Battle Unfolds
Everything is included in the feed of things as they happened with some fantastic pieces of artwork showing off famous depictions of the event. Not only do they go into great detail about how the battle was fought but give you some interesting historical information about the day and its main protagonists too...
One of the things that strikes you as you read is just how intense it would have been for all involved from the lowliest trooper all the way up to the Generals themselves. Everything hung on a few key moments and it's fascinating to see how it all played out.
While the battle at this point in the day would have been over it they even provided some interesting details about the aftermath. I for one didn't know what a Waterloo Smile was but it certainly adds another grisly note to the whole affair.
As well as giving you a chance to learn about the battle it also makes for a fascinating opportunity for us as Wargamers to re-fight this particular big moment in the history of warfare. Be it through Warlord Games' Black Powder and their variety of sets or any other gaming system you might want to mention you have the chance to see how history might have changed.
Have you fought any tabletop battles today in commemoration? If so let us know below and with what systems!
If you're a fan of military tactics this is a great battle to check out.

Cool – have to try to sneak it in during my lunch tomorrow
Slitherine were running an all day game of the battle using scourage of war computer game and broadcasting live on the military history website
How does Warlord’s Black Powder game play compared to Bolt Action? Does it have the same order mechanic?
Black Powder is nothing like Bolt Action. It is based on Warmaster. There is a really nice interview with Rick Priestley about it on the Warlord site: http://www.warlordgames.com/interview-rick-priestley/
If you want a game similar to Bolt Action check out “Muskets and Tomahawks” by the same folks who do Saga. It uses cards for activations instead of dice but its pretty much the same idea. It mainly covers the FIW period but can be used for AWI and Napoleonic skirmishes as well.
Thoroughly enjoyed this as a read, tried to follow it during the day but it wasn’t to be, so sat down on my break at work on Friday and read it through.
