Pre-Orders For The Horus Heresy: Legions Imperialis Fire Up Soon
November 13, 2023 by brennon
Games Workshop has revealed that pre-orders are FINALLY coming up for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis. Their new "epic scale" (8mm) wargame, designed to play out some of the biggest battles of The Horus Heresy, will be on a two-week pre-order starting from this weekend.

Shop Warhammer @ Store.OnTableTop
Starting things off, we have the Legions Imperialis boxed set that you can see here. This allows you to build two armies split between the Legiones Astartes and the Solar Auxilia OR you could bring them both together to create a full force for either the Loyalists or the Traitors.
The set comes with 223 miniatures (spread across the multiple bases) including characters, infantry, vehicles, walkers and the impressive Warhound Titans. You also get dice, tokens, templates and more for you to use when diving into the game alongside those core rules and some scenarios to play.
Enhance Your Army
As well as the boxed set, you can also get your hands on some extra miniatures for both your Space Marines and the poor mortals that have to follow them into battle. You'll be able to get a smaller set of miniatures like the ones below.
The Legiones Astartes // Legions Imperialis
The Solar Auxilia // Legions Imperialis
If you've decided to split the box with a friend then these might be a good next step for you to consider. Maybe bundle the boxed set alongside one of these sets so that you've got a good way to bolster your forces on the tabletop beyond your initial games.
As if that wasn't enough, you can also get packs of heavy armour and more for you to use alongside your armies. Maybe you fancy the Kratos Heavy Tank Squadron or their pack of Rhinos which are going to be good for getting your forces into the heart of the action?

If you want to arrive in style then you can also get your hands on the old Aeronautica Imperialis Thunderhawk Gunship which might be useful when you're looking to blast your enemies to pieces whilst delivering your hard-hitting troops into the maelstrom.
Thunderhawk Gunship // Legions Imperilais
An impressive miniature and certainly a lot cheaper than trying to get your hands on one for full 28mm wargaming on the tabletop!
On the other side of things, you've also got some great reinforcements for the Solar Auxilia. For example, you can roll into battle with the pretty badass Baneblades that a lot of folks will know from Warhammer 40,000 but still made quite a name for themselves in The Horus Heresy all the same.

Going back to Aeronautica Imperialis leftovers for a moment, you'll also be able to get your hands on a bunch of aerial miniatures that will see themselves reinvented for Legions Imperialis. In this case, you've got the likes of the Lightning Fighters.

I do like that Games Workshop are at least looking back at some of their earlier work and doing something new with it rather than leaving it as a missed opportunity. This is just a snapshot of the miniatures that they are going to be bringing to the tabletop for Legions Imperialis though. There are loads more aircraft, walkers and other vehicles which can help supplement your force.
Not to be left out, we also have the likes of the Armiger Knights...

...and some Questoris Knights that will be offering their own brand of brutal battlefield killing to your army of choice. As with all of the miniatures for The Horus Heresy era, you can paint them up as Loyalists that are looking to defend Terra and the Imperium or you could go full Traitor. So many different planets and their forces threw their lot in with the Traitors!
Questoris Knights // Legions Imperialis
Looking back to Adeptus Titanicus, there are also some of the larger miniatures from that range making it into the mix. Would sir or madam like a Warlord Titan that doesn't mean you need to take out another mortgage?

Games Workshop have clearly had a lot of this kit sitting around in the warehouses for a while and they've decided that now it's time to simply unleash it all on the tabletop in one big go. It will be interesting to see what the uptake is on Legions Imperialis now. Has the wait been too long? Has the hype behind it died off?
Furnish Your Battlefield & Learn The Rules
As well as the miniatures, you're also going to be able to get your hands on battlefields and some small scale terrain for use in Legions Imperialis. These look like tiny versions of the classic Gothic Ruins that many of us will remember from older editions of Warhammer 40,000.
Terrain // Legions Imperialis
You look to get a good amount of buildings for your infantry to hide in and around as well as plenty of scatter. I'm sure that a lot of this will end up being good basing material as well as terrain in people's collections!
Capping things off, we also have some of the extra bits and pieces that might need to play the game should you come at things from a different angle. You have the Rulebook...

...and also things like the Army Cards that will be great for referencing things in the heat of battle. I would imagine these aren't going to change any time soon either so you're (hopefully) not going to need to repurchase these in a few months time.

With such a HUGE dump of releases for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis, it will be fascinating to see if Games Workshop take this any further in the future. Could this be the most we see for this particular game for maybe half a year? There is a lot for people to be getting on with and I can't see anything obviously missing bar some of the main characters of course.
That could be quite fun! Small, resin versions of the Primarchs and other major characters. Even if they do do something like this, I could see this being a very long way off. They have The Old World to bring back in February next year!
There is a lot on the way for Legions Imperialis and it would be interesting to hear what you folks think!

No orcs, no squads, no eldar of either taste, no ‘nids…. *yawns*
I know what you mean, it would have been good to see what tau and necron titans (or equivalent) would look like. I still have all my epic stuff so I’ll stick with that and see what mantic are going to do with warpath. It’s not like any of this wont be available at a later date (OK maybe not the big box).
Yes, but also no Tau, so it’s not all bad.
It was my big game 30 or so years ago. The models look great, the nostalgia is working hard. I already have a lot of unpainted plastic (not to mention resin, metal, MDF, foamboard, ah you know).
The question I’m asking myself is can I be arsed? I think the answer is no.
No leaks on the expected price for the starter set yet? I’ll bet on £100 for this one (just in time for Xmas and adding the FOMO for parents having to buy a set for their kids), it’s not going to be cheap (if you look at the release and price of the Titanicus set when that came out with just two Titian, two “small” Titans and two Knights in the game). I think a lot of us are remembering the nostalgia for the old Space Marine game when you got a shedload of figures and tanks etc in the… Read more »
£120 for the base box apparently
I think that’s actually a really reasonable price for the amount of models and gubbinz
Dunno, in the Starter Box it’s two of the smaller Titians (Wolfhounds), eleven tanks, and the infantry shown in the two pictures above. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/11/12/sunday-preview-war-on-an-epic-scale-in-the-age-of-darkness/ Compared to the old Space Marine box set there’s a LOT less in the way on plastic crack (even although it was 6mm instead). it had…… 16 Land Raiders 32 Rhinos 320 Space Marines (@5 minis per base that was 64 bases vs the 40(ish) in the new box set). …and we’ve got to remember that historically these “Starter Boxes” are usually the best value point for GW games (they really hit you up for the… Read more »
Yeah, I guess if you’re looking purely at the numbers of miniatures the 1st Space Marine would appear to be better value. Thing is, these models are far better sculpted, better scaled with each other and there is so much more variety. I mean, do you really want to show that a unit is armed with missiles or assault weapons by having a different coloured base? Or would you rather a spiffy new model that actually has a missile launcher or assault weapons. I haven’t finished all the core heresy novels but I am a huge fan of the setting,… Read more »
It’s about 17-24 plastic miniatures worth of models if you translated the plastic into 28mm + the two small titans.
For £120…..
Granted printed books are expensive these days since covid.
Compare that with Epic wargame range from Warlord where you get a massive volume of v. good epic models.
the only epic for me comes from Warlord but hope you 30k fans enjoy ?
It’s a no from me.
My main interest these days outside of Blood Bowl – is just painting stuff – and I couldn’t see to paint these when Epic came out so I have no chance now!
This going to cost a fortune.
Indeed. I am going to be VERY broke from this!
It being 30k rather than 40k, and the likely price make this a firm “no” from me. FOMO has long since worn off. I enjoyed Epic Armageddon and will dig that stuff out of retirement if I feel the need.
I wait for the 40K one before I make a choice….
I wonder if this drop is bigger than it would have been if the launch had happened in August.
My thought is that we are looking at 2 or 3 sets of preorders, possibly to help clear the shelves in GW’s warehouses and maybe get their releases back on schedule.
I thought they entire point of epic was to have a big game on the “cheap”.
The prices are insane, I don’t see anyone investing in this. Why isn’t it a fully playable game in a box? It’s epic!
