Knight Models lost out on the Marvel game. If you’re going to get them into tabletop games going down that route you could check out the Legendary: Marvel Card Game or maybe Dice Masters.
Many thanks for the clarification @brennon 🙂
Marvel games? Wizkids also has it covered in Heroclix .. (again.. overlooked *sigh*) and Marvel Strike Teams. They also have Marvel Dice masters (or had .. not sure if they are still coming out with them.)
HeroClix is a great idea but I think the models put some hobbyists off. It’s perfect for someone new to the gaming world though.
Dice Masters I did mention above though and it is a lot of good fun, especially when you can pull together a themed team like the X-Men or the Avengers.
The registry of battles should have a place for posts on how to lay out your tables, setup rules, stuff to relate it back to games. You may of mentioned that i was only half listening and I’m not going back!
Yep, I’m wondering if projects is suitable for writing those kinds of posts? (As Projects will be linked to battles natively)
Awesome idea – might be a hell of a job fighting the way through the “facts” and some cases may be very contentious…
Hi Chaps, I think the opportunity to name the Catalogue of Battle, the Battleogue is t great to be missed!
Like how every time you guys read out my username you stumble over it; we really should work out some sort of shorthand or nickname to make it easier on you guys. ? Don’t know about the movie, but in the book Radagast doesn’t save the dwarves from the spiders in Mirkwood; Radagast doesn’t even appear in the book (he’s mentioned once when Gandalf is trying to mooch a place to stay the night off of Beorn, but that’s it). You might be thinking of Gandalf saving them from the trolls earlier in the book @dignity . The index of… Read more »
I’m surprised Sam didn’t run into the set and shout at Warren the full Mirkwood spider situation!
The Battle of Red Cliff is amazing – there is a great movie of the same name that is well worth a watch – slightly “computer game-y” as the heroes do far too much but it is how the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” was written (well the first couple of pages anyway – I found it very hard going!)
I have only seen this now… Trust me, I intend to sit them down and go through it with diagrams and flowcharts.
Also, Red Cliff is a fantastic film.
In colour with icon etc I hope!
Did Hard. Please someone make it. “Tower Crawler”. Solo mode John Mcclane starts inside room against SO terrorists. Multi-player co-op Mcclane inside, scattered SWAT team members force entry from exterior.
@dignity Two big things on Little Big Horn.
1. The Native Americans had both Horses and Repeating Rifles and they vastly outmaneuvered and outgunned the US Army.
2. The Americans were on foot (they had dismounted from what I’ve read) and had Single Shot Rifles plus the US Cavalry wasn’t trained to fight pitched battles in this time period.
I would like to look into the “Suicide” angle because it seems fishy to me. Maybe as the battle went on Natives picked up US Carbines and fired them back at the Cavalry?
The suicide angle was pushed a lot in the late 1970’s and 80’s even mentioned in the alt history ‘The Indians Won’ novel but no sure how its currently percieved. Think it came from Indian account the appeared around that time.
After a bit of digging it seems to come from a handful of Academic papers written in the 80’s which are horrendously bad. Seriously I used my Uni Login to read them and wow they would have been instantly failed by any Professor if I handed them in to my HIS-101 Class. They came to the suicide conclusion based on a handful of American Indian Accounts (which were contradicted by at least as many contrary accounts by other American Indians) and, this is the really intellectually dishonest bit, modern 1980’s Armed Service Suicide rates. They compared the suicide rates of… Read more »
@warzan @dignity there is a movie of the battle of Red cliff, called surprisingly Red cliff.
I would like to see the chinese version for the home market which is twice the length of the one released for the west
It’s available as the Special Edition – I have a copy so I know that it was released into the European market.
Two versions, the standard one (about just over 2 hours) and the Director Cut/Special Edition – which is much better – though it clocks in at nearly 4 and a half hours viewing time. The extra on the SE version about the warship they built is really interesting
Thanks for the info I shall go and look for it
It’s a fantastic film.
I like the idea of a catalogue. I agree with justin in that it should have a “War – Campaign – Battle” filter. Take Davin. War – “Star Wars” – Campaign – “Original Trilogy” – Battle – “Davin” or The Iranian Embassy Siege. War – “Cold War” – Campaign – “Iranian Revolution” – Battle “Iranian Embassy Siege”. The only problem I see with List O’ Battles is it might be hard for new people to find things. For example if someone is interested in the French and Indian War they would have to first go and research all the battles… Read more »
I wonder would ‘War’ be enough and does it need ‘Campaign’?
Could get awkward or confusing if the battle is a campaign, eg. Battle of Britain, Battle of the Atlantic.
Ideas for stuff in the entries;
Who fought who, when, why, type of battle; mass battle, ambush, last stand, etc, result, suitable gaming system/rules or if a game specific to the battle already
exists, suitable scales and
figure ranges, terrain type, any resources/websites/ groups that have information about the battle if the player wants to do a deep dive into the fluff/ history.
Just a few ideas to kick off
Here’s a list of just the battles of the American Civil War https://www.historynet.com/civil-war-battles If someone came into that looking for content about a particular campaign they would have to go out and do extra research before coming back to OTT and selecting those battles. For example, let’s stick with the American Civil War, if someone has just painted up some United States Coloured Troops for a game like Sharp Practice and they want some inspiration for their games they could just go “War – American Civil War” – “Campaign – Late Western Campaign” – “Battles” and find everything they need.… Read more »
For what it is worth I agree with Justin. I would like to be able to search for Star Wars battles I can recreate – or Black Library Warhammer AoS or 40K battles from narratives or .. as he mentioned a time period .. I would like to recreate battles from WW1. I have my armies .. I know what time period or fictional setting they are in .. I want to know what options for great battles in that setting I can find ..
I think the British v the pirates in the Caribbean may be an interesting time to cover.have you considered Dr who game @warzan
For a pure sports based tabletop game, Crash Tackle is a good rugby sim. Likely OOP, I was able to find enough to print and play it. Minis existed for it, but playing with just the two-sided tokens is less cluttered and quicker playing.
I still have my 1984 copy of Statis-Pro (American) football card game, though so I may be out of touch …
I think the “Battle Registry” should follow along the Levels of Wargaming, perhaps with a “War” or “Time Period” level sitting over the top. This would help link the more board and chit style game – sorry I don’t know the correct terminology here – which otherwise you could be cutting out. I’d need to go back and look at what @oriskany set out to come up with an entity/relationship diagram… I think even just a “Battle” would be too higher level to end at, when say Waterloo could be broken down to a series of more detailed “Actions” (for… Read more »
I think actions might be just a little too far. Maybe those things could just be titled “La Hey Sainte (Waterloo)” and put under the 100 Days Campaign. Once you break it down every battle is really just a number of actions put together which seems like a bit too much depth for a simple index. The only reason I’m proposing Campaigns is because Uniforms/Equipment/Vehicles/Tactics can vary enormously from campaign to campaign while Actions within Battles are set in the same period. Take Scarif. You could have “War- Star Wars – Campaign – Original Trilogy – Battle – Scarif (X)”… Read more »
Sports games though not miniatures based would be for American Football Paydirt and Statis Pro football. There is a status pro baseball and boxing as well
Battle library
Like: yes
Support: yes (I’ll be a librarian. Huzza!)
Use tag/hashtag: OH HELL YES
What to fill it with:
* Universe (real, Star Wars, Warhammer)
* Place (Place, Planet, System)
* Time (date, “during A New Hope” )
* Units/Personal of importance (known named individuals, Ship names, Generals, famous fighters)
* Has been already done in “system x”
It’s a hell of a lot of work.
“It’s a hell of a lot of work.”
Yes it is….
Are we sure it is worth the benefit?
I think I’d have to rewatch the video to find out what that was again.
It would help people who want to make “bigger” projects like “all battles in the life of General X” or such things. For most people it’ll be not much more than “interesting fluff” but the really hard core gamers will gobble that up and homebrew the sh*t out of some rules.
Would you (and others) like to see this registry also applied to the BoW/OTT video and article content as well? – Where applicable of course.
Yes, would make sense IMHO
@Warren there is a football that came out on KS a couple of years ago which is very good and I know some footie fans who don’t game but will play this.

Theirs always subbuteo ???
@warzan glad to have inspired you lol
The battle directory is actually a really good idea. I’m happy to add battles, especially those from the far East. The ability to add info, links for more in depth info and links to rule systems suggestions and miniatures would be good. Maybe links to terrain tutorials as well maybe useful. I would add a film/documentary section as well as this may provide more info or inspiration.
There are several battles I can think of to add already.
@Warzan You mentioned an actual Soccer game whilst discussing @horati0nosebl0wer ‘s comment about interests in gaming, guildball / football etc. Have either of you heard about 4th Quarter football?
https://www.facebook.com/FourthQuarterFootballGame/
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/243113/fourth-quarter-football
This is an American football game that was kickstarted and successfully funded by a buddy of mine.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Bilbo and the Dwarves where saved by Wood Elves from the spiders in Mirkwood after Bilbo had done most of the work himself. I may be wrong, but having just re-watched the Hobbit again (all 3 films, as well as LotR) for the second time in eight months im pretty sure it was the Elves. Im with Justin, if theres a documentary about Little Big Horn and it brings new light to what happened it needs watching. Ill be back later as i still have a few things to comment on,… Read more »
@warzan Hmmn! off top of head for Battle Directory
Breakdown Historical- 20/21 century, 17/19th. 12th-16th 6th-11th. Ancient
Sci Fi Tv&Film , Book,
Fantasy ” ”
above and initial breakdown could be broken down more as it develops say for sci fi- T.V & Film Star Trek, Babylon 5 etc
Justins comments on the battles thing make sense, as for having other more fantastical battles instead of listing it as “ww2, Eastern Front, Stalingrad” you could do it as “fantasy wars, lotr, helms deep” or “sci fi, Star wars, Original era battles, Scarif”
From the frozen hellscape of the mountainous part of the US I’m glad to see that the idea of sport was able to hold. Regarding the playspace for gaming it is generally the game store that is central to the American gaming scene. Most libraries are rows of shelves for books and not much in the way of tables/anterooms where people can congregate. Public access computers are prevalent and take up what floor real estate might be occupied by tables. In general I think that the general atmosphere of boisterous gamers and the accompanying gamer funk is what might lead… Read more »
Hmm.. recruit a normi? Well, get them into how awesome and mind-activating the tabletop hobby can be! Simple mechanics at first, then expand if will-be. Roll your favorite type of dice [after figuring out the normi’s favorite kind].
The directory of battles would be fantastic!
I’m not sure about copyrights, but would you perhaps be able to import lists of battles from Wikipedia? This would save lot of manual work and create a link to the Wikipedia pages for further information.
I once played the Germans in a Normandy Landing game of bolt action, and it was one of the most boring games of my life. After 4 hours I’d lost 1 panzer, an anti tank gun, a flamethrower team and like 3 other guys, whereas I had killed over 500 allied troops. At one point I moved my remaining 2 panzers down onto the beach and started chasing things about just for something to do.
Let’s just say I’m not a fan of meat grinders.
I’m using Lord of the Rings as the hook for my Snag a Normie project this month, I’ve been lucky enough to find some nerds who hadn’t been exposed to gaming. They got pulled into d&d a year or so ago but as soon as I mentioned LOTR miniatures, they were right in. I’m hoping if I can get them into the game, by the time the new Amazon show comes out, we’ll have a wee team to try and snag other normies. Star Wars would probably have worked with them too and I’m thinking of painting up a couple… Read more »
