Let’s Play: GF9 Tanks with Phil Yates
September 26, 2016 by dignity
We're playing Tanks today from Gale Force Nine, joined by our friend and the games master himself Phil Yates.
John's a little outnumbered this time around facing off two shermans but this game shapes up to be an epic battle across the field. Tanks is a fun game that can be picked up and played easily like an old coin arcade game with simple rules and great historical reference for those who want a little more story to their games.
Who do you think will win?

Yes!!!! First to comment! Haven’t even watched it yet but i’m sure it’s great!
Nice match! I’ve really enjoyed the game after a match of regular FoW 🙂
Epic fight gentlemen!
@johnlions
In Kruppstahl we trust but really the crew needs to go back to gunnery school, those Shermans should have been toast!
@dignity
Who told you Shermans habe to stick together?? John?
You can’t find a 4 damage token as you don’t get any. Also, got the Assault gun rule wrong, it actually has a 180′ arc of fire unless any part of the target is to the shooters flank unless it also is in the corridor directly in front.
That was a fantastic game!
I’d like to play this but my LFGS has had the starter sets on order for 3 months now and still hasn’t received any stock!
I got let down by Wayland Games (or maybe the publisher) being unable to complete my preorder.
I went online and found Entoyment Wargaming. They are not local to me, but they are “a” LFGS in Poole UK. Fair price, swift delivery, Tanks! in stock and expansions available last time I checked.
I really enjoy this game and have the expansions which increase the variety immensely. I hope it keeps going as it’s perfect for ww2 fans without getting bogged down in flames of war which although fantastic can be a bit rule heavy (for me at least.)
Have the game am just building the Shermans as have panzers from FOW already.Just have to convince some one in tunbridge wells club to play….should not be too difficult to bend an arm or four. Some may even have a few more tanks 🙂
Nice battle!
And yet, nigh impossible to get state side.
interesting looking game.
Picked this up at Salute. Simple game nothing serious it’s just for fun, which it certainly is. Great little game if you have some spare time at the end of club night. Also it is a bit like X wing where you can rope in people who don’t normally wargame
My son and I love this game. On the advice of Warren at Salute I got it for his birthday in August and we have since expanded our forces. I tried to go cheap and cheerful and came unstuck. I went for Zvezda click together kits on ebay, but the 1/100 15mm scale seems a dodgy size from company to company. I got 3 Russians and a Panzer IV. The Panzer IV was dwarfed by the Shermans when they should be a reasonably similar size. The Russians came up small too, but I got some good advice. As long as… Read more »
Great video! You guys know I loves me some demo games! 😀
I tell you what, I think I feel an “Oriskany Return to World War 2” coming on.
>>>SPOILERS – DON’T READ THIS PART UNTIL WATCHING THE VIDEO<<<
Congrats to @dignity on a great victory, despite @johnlyons ‘ Panther evidently being layered in Chobham armor there for a while . . . 😀
Great game, quick and simple to play. I think I might have to pick this up to get my kids more interested in wargames.
Thoroughly enjoyed the game. cannot wait till my order arrives and I can get playing.
Tanks dogfighting? Err…OK. These kind of mechanics are fine for space or air combat or even something like Car Wars but seem to me very contrived for the historical subject matter.
I kinda have to agree. the game got intense at the end which was fun but over all it feels like a flight game with tank skins. Not really feeling the vibe.
I think the problem is, not enough units and not enough terrain. If the table was more bogged down, they couldn’t “dance” all over the place like the guys have done. But saying that, it will always come down to an aerobatic display with tanks…. Maybe I would feel differently if I owned some small tanks……
There wasn’t a ‘problem’ with the game at all. If they had added in more tanks with upgrade cards and more terrain and objectives, it would probably pushed the length to 2 hrs, if including all the explanatory dialogue to enable other potential players to get the basic idea of how the game is played! Not all gamers are ‘experienced’ or have a broad gaming experience! For a, comparatively, simple game, there is still much to absorb within it and learn how to ‘optimise’ your force potential.
Again another great video from you guys. can’t wait for the next when you use more tanks and the upgrades etc.
This is a great fun and quick game. The only problem with it has been getting your hands on it. I only recently got my starter, from Wayland games, as it is nigh on impossible to get in the States. I have managed to get the British and Russians but have had no luck with the US or Germans. I have the card deck pre-ordered so hopefully when that is released I will be able to play bigger games. I have plenty of FoW tanks my problem is the cards.
The best moment was at the end with @johnlyons *gasp* of realization that he had remained stationary. 🙂
Nice one
Great bat rep, guys. Definitely picking this one up 🙂
Many thanks to Phil for correcting the wrong played rules in earlier videos.
That looks like a deffo for the wants list, though I’d use my 1/72 tanks rather than the 15mm ones. It. Definately looks like great little game to play.
Firstly, thanks for the battle report, it was fun and enjoyable to watch. Secondly, there are quite a few comments alluding to the game being ‘not very realistic’! Let’s see which ‘boxes’ it does tick: it is based in a WW2 setting? Yes! It involves tanks? Yes! It is a fairly quick game? Yes! It is quite easy to learn to play and teach to other ‘non wargamers’? Yes! It is expandable and readily replayable? Yes! It creates narrative, during and after the game? Yes! It is FUN? Yes! It attempts to simulate actual tank warfare during the period? NO!… Read more »
