Let’s Play: Joan of Arc – Historical Scenario
September 29, 2017 by brennon
Leo from Mythic Games directs the action as Warren faces off against Justin in a historical scenario for Time of Legends: Joan of Arc.
In this scenario Warren is playing the English army, made up of expert longbowmen, who are attempting to escort one of two wagons into a neighbouring village. Justin, as the French army with their strong cavalry, will attempt to stop him.
Do you prefer the narrative scenarios or these historical scenarios?
I loved loved loved this, and spent two days with the scenario bubbling in my mind around the other tactical options I could have taken! 🙂
Can’t wait to get home and watch, itching for the Kickstarter so I can lay down some cash.
Oh that was even better than the werewolf scenario! It shows how 1 decision or 1 roll of the dice can have a serious impact. Exciting and very, very close.
Now, what about a battle with the dragon? 🙂
Looking forward to the KS. I’m sold since I’ve seen the minis 😎
Will watch this as soon as I’ve got time!!
@warzan
Bootcamp?!?!
I like any game with custom dice and cards that does not require me to look through a tower of books to find a lookup table. This was well done and cannot wait for the KS.
Doesn’t look like the bases are small enough to get 12 units in a hex.
That’s what i thought, i was confused about the number of units in a league more than a few times watching this demo.
The video you see here uses an early prototype. Since this time the hex tiles have got a little bigger, and the bases a bit smaller, precisely because of the problem that you spotted. We spotted it too 🙂
Not sure I like the idea of being able to activate the same units multiple times, as this leads to activating only the most powerful units and the rest do nothing all game. This was touted as a mass battle game but the demo is just a skirmish, how many bases can you go up to?
Me either. If a league containing 3 ( or more ) bases activates, they should’nt get activated again until a players next turn. It looks to me people will lean towards playing the French, those Knights are chucking out tons of nigh unstoppable damage. Obviously the Scout and othe NPC’s can help ( was it the Healer with an auto-shield ? ), but it’s a very small amount of help against that many Red Attack dice. I know we haven’t seen all the units ( gotta leave some unveilings for the KS 😀 ), but the French Knights seem a… Read more »
@kantor72 – The knights are certainly powerful. There are a few reasons why this isn’t as bad as it may at first seem. Firstly, they can only move and fight if they have charge resources available. Not always true. Secondly, the longbow is pretty effective against them, as was the case historically. It’s not got the same killing power because the rules are more subtle than that. Instead it will kill a couple and scatter the rest. Scattering is particularly effective at breaking up attacks because of the area activation. The damage system and activation system work together to give… Read more »
Cheers for that @quirkworthy . I needed this explanation, it has cleared some things up for me.
Jolly good 🙂
For example There was a point towards the end when Warren chose to flee one of Justin’s cavalry and he put him in the same league as another single cavalry rather than an empty league. That meant Justin could activate them both straight away without having to spend an extra one to consolidate.
It certainly does.
Well this has been found to be false, cavalry can charge two, so they end on an area that hasn’t been activated and so can fight again. Bows also can’t interupt as the attack happens after the charge so there is no opportunity to do so. What we all feared came to pass and massed mounted knights are OP.
I thought about that for a bit, but then realised that the fact that you can only activate each League once (excluding the Replay cube) will limit this. Sure, it will be possible, but it’s going to take some canny planning to pull it off. It’s not like Infinity where you can dump a bunch of orders on a rambo unit. Sure, you Charge with Knights and attack and then stick a red cube on the League they’re on to attack again, maybe a pink cube as well if you’ve got one. Obviously, my understanding of the rules is woefully… Read more »
As is mine, but currently i feel it should be a single activation per bunch of bases, not per league. I’ll probably understand more once the KS drops in 10 days or so and information starts getting released.
@hithero – sometimes you do want to move the same units more than once, and sometimes you don’t or can’t. It depends.
Obviously, if you’ve executing an ambush, as shown here, your main strike force will make big movements. However, having played this scenario repeatedly, I can tell you that the French cannot win by using only one group of Knights. Just doesn’t work.
I don’t know how many the maximum is. We should try several boxes in a battle at once and see 🙂
Excited and hopeful about the game’s potential! Does it seem a little confusing to see which of your units you’ve used? Seems there was some confusion in the middle about which units had moved into the league and what not.
As mentioned above, the units in the final version will have smaller bases and the hexes will be slightly larger to help things fit better. This was played with an early prototype.
After fully watching the video and thinking things over, I rather like the way that the knights worked.
Big cavalry charge exploiting a weakness and charging down an unprotected flank, sowing chaos and devastation before them?
Functioning as intended, I’d say!
Did @dignity just beat @warzan on camera?
Am I the 1st to be shocked by it 😉
I really enjoyed watching this, but did Leo state or was it told elsewhere as to the historical outcome of the scenario?
The French obliterated the English.

Thanks for the link. I bet that one French knight was already sick anyway.
