Let’s Play: Core Space – Get the Goods
November 17, 2017 by dignity
We have Colin from Battlesystems in the studio this week to play a demo game of his upcoming Sci-Fi adventure, skirmish game, Core Space.
Check Back Tomorrow, Friday 17th For Their Kickstarter Launch!
Battlesystems, who are more known for their amazing clip terrain pieces have delved into the world of game design for their deep space game, Core Space. Survive the hijacking of space bandits, or the ruthless Harvesters while working together, or alone to claim your objectives.
With actual in-game tokens for your weaponry concealed within the terrain, this is a great game of discovery and item management during your tabletop adventures.
Are you a team player or a lone wolf?

Seems a bit awkward using rulers amongst dense 3d terrain, so why not make use of the grid for faster, more accurate measuring?
I have to agree with @hithero — I believe the game would be with a grid movement system either square or hex. The ruler looks very awkward.
I feel the same way. absolutely crying out for space hulk style movement, the ruler is just too vague and clunky. you need to package this as a boardgame, missions, terrain and miniatures in each expansion. you would be producing some of the best looking boards in boardgaming.
the ideas and concepts behind the game are great, it’s the sort of game we all want to play. but pulling off this kind of progression is very very difficult. too many variables, so difficult to balance.
I will be keeping a close eye on the games development.
It does seem strange to be using rulers when you’re playing on a grid and all of Battle Systems’ scenery has grids printed on it
I agree. A grid movement system would suit Core Space more.
Well I thoroughly enjoyed that, I will definitely tune into the Kickstarter. Visually one of the best games I’ve seen and the RPG and PvPvGame elements seem extremely well done.
I take the points about movement rulers vs grid movements but equally I really do like that the free-form movement that gives the open-world tabletop type feel. You could take the game onto custom boards/mats with loads more terrain and make it really epic.
The war game / board game / RPG hybrid is a real selling point for me. Can’t wait to see more!
sounds very interesting, I like the fact that is a skirmish game not a board game and that it is made for 1 – 6 players. Battle Systems terrain is always great, we use some for our infinity games.
I wonder if the game is intended to expand into more open environments where the rulers are more clearly needed?
I really like the look of it anyway and it seems pretty fluid. Definitely considering backing, nice to see it is is already close to funded a day into the campaign.
Assuming it’s intended to be played on Battle Systems terrain (and let’s face it, ideally they’re going to want you to buy more of their terrain) then I doubt it. All of the Battle Systems terrain sets contain a printed grid. So if it’s compatible with all their other sets then IMO it would be easier to just use the grid than rulers
It seems to me that the growing threat of the Purge is pretty well balanced, and I like how they shape the second half of the game. Happy to back this one!
Pretty sure you can use any type of terrain with this game, also the game should be pretty flexible when it comes to miniatures. BS stated that they will release a character creation system so you can create you own characters and crews. Also they plan to let players create their own missions and post them on their website. It sounds to me BS is happy to provide a sandbox to tinker around with and see what the community comes up with, which makes the game very interesting for me. I dare say it what about a bootcamp…now I need… Read more »
looks interesting.
I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. To me, this is very reminiscent of shows and movies where the protagonists are necessarily the “good guys”, but are at least better than the “bad guys”. Quite evocative of the Firefly universe or edge space Star Wars stories. I also concur that there should be dual rules for movement, grid and ruler based, that the players could choose. With this terrain, I would choose grid based movement and reserve the ruler rules for more elevated terrain scenarios.
Update: Colin replied to my question about movement. He said you can totally use the grid for movement and use the ruler to measure just weapon range. I’m happy to see that option included in the game.
