Let’s Play: Conquest
January 29, 2018 by dignity
You've seen our how to play video of Conquest so now Leo from Para Bellum Wargames will put Justin to the test in this full-on battle.
The game will be played with a time limit of about an hour and a half and you will see the full flow of the game from the initial deployments to the inevitable battlefield clashes. At the end the commander with the most victory points, determined by killing enemy warbands, will be the victor.
With about 160 miniatures on the battlefield this will be an epic match up!
Will you be playing this one yourselves?
I really like the activation system paired with the spread out deployment. My only concern is that it looks like it can get crowded really fast limiting tactical options for outmaneuvering your opponent. Will the game be playable on a 4 by 6?
I can’t remember the exact time in the video, but he does say it can be played on 6×4 playing field, with some additional rules specifically for it.
Bear in mind, units die very quickly 😉 I quite like the intensity that the smaller battlespace gives
makes me happy seeing those massed ranks. one of the best sights in tabletop and a genuine rarity these days.
It all looked very cramped on a 4×4 to me.Stuff like the keyboard, dicetray and cribsheet should be off to one side, away from the play area.
I think he mentions playing it on a 6×4 but given the size of the units an 8×5 would probably be better
I agree.Particularly with the way deployment can work out if you roll high and get a lot of units available to deploy.
Just remember, this isn’t a cookie cutter fantasy game. The system is designed for a 4×4 space. The 6×4 is for exceptional battle sizes.
You’ll generally only be bringing in 2—3 units on turn one, then you’ll have you Offside deployment too and you can move freely through friendly units 😉
What do you mean by cookie cutter game?
Like kings of War, wrath of Kings etc. Things that generally play like or if not in the same vain as warhammer fantasy. Thus is completely different apart from dice and measuring sticks 🙂 this size board would be far too small for any of the affor mentioned but this has been specifically designed around a 4×4 table. Nice to know I’ll have a 2×4 space at the end of the table for all the dice/references/beer/measure etc
You mean the same way Warhammer Fantasy and it’s ilk are all based on rules from the 60’s and 70’s with just a few minor tweaks here and there?. Its just I suppose you could call it traditional gaming.I still think 4×4 is far too small for this type of game given the larhish size of the units
Trust me on this. It isn’t 😉
I must have missed the previous demos, but this looked really good. Great to see fast moving, fast playing mass ranked battles. Reminds me of what I liked about War of the Ring from GW.
The table did look very crowded, although the game still seemed to play / work… Maybe it would just take some getting used to?
Has the scale of this game been covered anywhere? How tall are the miniatures?
I think if we consider that the dice tray and other objects were obscuring part of the table, and one player was really not deploying to make use of any kind of flanking, there looks to be enough room to manoeuvre.
I was also a fan of the battle report, though I’d actually prefer all non-impact damage to be simultaneous.
Yeah, my comment wasn’t suggesting that the game was too crowded to function, just that the look of the game was very crowded. It seemed to play very well.
I really like the looks of the game and the mechanics. Unfortunately, many of them are the kind I absolutely suck at. That whole restricted movement thing (needing to activate one unit before the other to make sure it has room) is something I am embarrassingly bad at.
That being said, do we have any information on availability of the game through normal distribution channels? In other words, can I buy this from my friendly local gaming store in the US?
Very cool to see a full game, been looking forward to that. The pace of play and the way units come on I think are both nice features that distinguish it from some other games out there. I get the impression its designed to work in an organised competitive scenario as well. I get the idea of not making characters larger than life, that being an ethos of the game and the setting. I do think though if I was to change one thing, would be to add a bit more mechanical flavour that was unique to the faction. Might… Read more »
tournament play is precisely the level of playtesting that the game is currently going though before the books go to final print. I have been shown a few sneak peaks of 3ups of the Brute Drones and Knights being prepped as tournament trophies 😉
I’d like to see the minis… I see on their site, it looks like they are doing some sort of barbarians. If that’s the case, I’ll wait for those and buy them for another game, as i can’t stand rank and flank style games.
