Is Oldhammer The Best Warhammer? Why Are Classic Miniatures So Popular? #OTTWeekender
December 9, 2022 by warzan
It's OTT Weekender time! Is Oldhammer the best kind of Warhammer? We dive into a discussion on why classic wargaming miniatures are so popular and where the charm for those old-school miniatures comes from.
There are a lot of classic miniatures still available on the market PLUS there are plenty of wargames, roleplaying games and more that make use of old-school aesthetics and would match those epic, older miniatures. Is it a case of old techniques for sculpting being more charming than new 3D sculpted miniatures?

Interesting subject because I was looking at a number you videos on mordheim. I believe a recent major gaming event for it occured in the USA. It peeked by interest in looking at the models to get a warband myself. I started looking a number of sources including from Bens youtube channel. It is good to see a number of companies still making models for it. One the videos I came across rather than using old minis they used the GW Hexbane’s underworlds warband as witch hunters and 40k Battle Sisters as sister band in Mordhiem. They looked amazing. It… Read more »

HAIL SANTA!
Yay it’s the nutters R.Us. Show.
Good old Friday weekender,..oh yes always a book…..and Vikings at war already backed on kickstarter..
They will make Gerry World to worship proper figures.
Another Friday swings round and another weekender to entertain us.
Will you guys be covering the news that more games rights have been sold off by MYTHIC. What with the previous ones being passed on, and the UK office being closed off a few years back putting all their staff out of work they haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory since bursting onto the scene with Pantheon
What are each of your thoughts on this news
I want to see some good news in the fact Mythic are cutting costs at least to stay afloat and hopefully ship the vast number of games they did kickstarters for and as yet failed to deliver them to people. I understand Monolith bought Reichbusters and Solomon Kane. Cmon bought Super Fantasy Brawl, Enchanters, and Steamwatchers. Hopefully this will generate the funds needed to see through the remaining projects so people are not left out of pocket. Which sadly includes myself and my increasing failing hope I will see a copy of the darkest dungeon. Which they are selling copies… Read more »
Dear Santa,
Please send me a microscope, as I desperately need it for my forthcoming shipping …..
Ooh fabulous looking game mat books.
Just like the astronomer in Deep Impact get the book get the book get the book the book the book the book.
Fab show guy’s.
I miss the lore of the old world. I used to buy every codex, even if I didn’t play that army. Just so I could read up on all of it.
I do like those MCP minis and I am drawn to a spiderman related force, possibly spider foes moreso. My friends have been startig to play MCP this year and I’ve wanted that core set for a long while. I’ve a £50 voucher for your store. Any chance you might get the core box in stock before that voucher expires?
i shall ask Tom, but MCP and SW are notorious for their god awful stock delivery
Very nice metal minis
nice metal minis
Old school or new school miniatures? Honestly if its a good looking mini I’m there. I have a few thousands miniatures (maybe more) from the 80’s to recent releases.
Yes, Books over tablets. Table top RPG is my reason to unplug.
Wittering is as traditional as sculpting in greenstuff and metal (not that any of them are always good mind)
Have a great weekender!! Great show
@Warzan, stuff the grumpy grognards it is after all December. Now if you started in September, i would give you a whole barrel of crap. Old minis can not be beaten, i look back at those days and get a longing to revisit those days. There where so many nice minis, I just wish I had got more than i did. Mars bars in the fridge, you need to try one from the freezer. They last a lot longer, and they can break a tooth. @warzan, if you want to start a old metal mini movement sign me up. Now… Read more »
I have not hot into Marvel Crisis Protocol but if they ever release a Captain Britain set, I am straight into this.
book justin but you dont read comments
LMAO, harsh but true mate 🙂
Great to hear support for hand scupted minis. When crafts are lost they are lost. CAAD is great for vehicles and hard surface but characters tend to loose a bit with a step or two put between hand and sculpt.
I was around when Oldhammer was a thing.. it’s like 8 bit video graphics. I’ve been there done that.. not interested in doing it again. While “hand sculpted” minis are full of character. I just kind of prefer the newer stuff. I’m not going to say your wrong if that’s your thing, but I think some of the computer sculpted stuff is really really good.
Wow that was interesting and a little chaotic
Old is ultimate!
