Asset Drop Nov 2017 Box Quick Look – Part Two
January 5, 2018 by johnlyons
I'm back again with the November 2017 Asset Drop box so it's time to take another Quick Look at one of the tutorials and paint sets.
The box came with a selection of paints and effects including:
- A trio of Secret Weapon Acrylics: Rubber Tire Set
- AMMO fromt Mig Jimenez Metallic Colours
- BrokenToad Weathering Pigment
- Coat d’Arms Brushscapes Textured Paint and PaintBrush
This time I thought I'd try out the Secret Weapon Acrylics and see how they'd work on some armour.
I picked out a Black Diamond mini from the Relic Knights game as their armour really benefits from this very dark look.
Although the video might not catch every detail the rubber paints really do an excellent job.
What's your technique for dark non-black armour? What do you think of the selection in the Asset Drop Box?

I think I’ll be signing on for a month at least, and back ordering that box. I’m with John, in that its all about that book. Keep including detailed useful tutorials teaching us a variety of new and useful tools and I can see me keeping ordering more.
Cheers John and Assetdrop for getting these videos out there.
I thought we could back order old boxes? I can’t see that option. Am I being blind? I can see where to order individual paints, but I was hoping for the whole box and guide (and discount).
Hi Lawnor, apologies for the delay in getting the past boxes up. You will definitely be able to buy them. We’re hoping to upload them on Monday. The store needs a redesign to incorporate the past boxes, and also to add all of December’s paints. You’ll probably notice it’s a long page at the moment, and so we want to make it a bit easier for people to navigate first. If you drop me an email on [email protected], I’ll make sure to message you when the boxes go live so you can grab November’s 🙂 Subscriptions for January’s box close… Read more »
Brilliant. Cheers. I tried adding all of Novembers paints to see if that triggered something. it did take a while. I’d suggest an option to show only one/selected months paints, or at least an add button that doesn’t leave the shop every time. But you’re not really a shop shop so its less of an issue. Once your range expands it’s going to be hard to find anything the way things are though. I’ve already subscribed for the next box. Keep up the good tutorials. For me this is a monthly painting lesson teaching me a new technique and supplying… Read more »
Really enjoyed these videos John. I started with the November box and also received the December box. It’s been good to see someone else following along with the instructions from the manual. They both proved to be relatively simple tutorials, but it’s always nice to have a video to follow along to also. Hope to see more of these “quick look” style videos in the future.
They’ve got extra videos and tutorials on their website for subscribers too. I’ll look closer at them when i come to using their January box on something. Out of interest, what was in the December box?
Hi Lawnor, the December’s box reveal is now up and on our website. You can check it out here: https://www.assetdrop.co/decembers-box-revealed/. And thanks so much for subscribing! So great to have you on board for January’s box 😀
Hi thepaintingbozo, thanks for sticking with us for the November and December drops! We’ve really enjoyed watching John experiment with our guide and paints too. I’m glad you found the tutorials simple- that was our aim 🙂
The paints do look interesting. I will need to see if I can track down a bottle or two.
I was delighted to see that Asset Drop included the rubber tire set.
I’ve been using the set for a bit and I’ve loved it.
These are the first five of my Black Templar Primaris Marines. I airbrushed them tire black to start and then airbrushed in the lighter colors up to the highlights. Then I edged them in the rubber highlight with some additional white edging.

Really happy with the results, but in the time it took to do those my buddy completed all his nurgle army, bought more, and completed those too! ><
Hi bazleebub, they look fantastic! I really like the accent colours you’ve chosen- red and white add great contrast to the rubber tire colours, and bring the whole army together 🙂 For the Painting Guide, I painted Madison Yoshida from Anvil Industry, and chose red for her sword and other smaller sections for that same reason.
By the way, you’re friend may have painted his whole nurgle army, but I bet they didn’t look half as good as yours 😉
Excellent job! Exactly how I thought they would look when I thought about them.
Excellent review John will you be doing any more on any of th other asset drop boxes???? I like the look of the Secret Weapon Paints….
great way to grow as a painter. hope to see more of these.
I’ve been pondering about subscribing since early December I haven’t done any painting in ages through lack of time organisation etc I’m wondering if getting a monthly tutorial may be the format to get me to do _something_ It’s quite a bit of money (not bad value for money just quite a bit more than a subscription to a magazine or something) but that might actually work to my advantage If I’m paying for a turorial hopefully it’ll make me actually use the stuff each month and if I can do that if might get me back into painting regularly… Read more »
Or at least, I was going to…
When I click on ‘Get Yours’ I get a pop-up telling me it’ll be sent on 27th Jan and that a subscription will automatically renew… but it doesn’t actually put a subscription in the shopping cart, and there’s no ‘next’ button so I can’t actually subscribe.
Am I missing something obvious @assetdrop ?
Never mind – I’ve done it. The bottom of the pop-up wasn’t visible on my laptop screen, and scrolling just moved the main page in the background. But by logging on via my PC I was able to access the button to put it in my cart.
Am I right in thinking that I won’t receive the January box? That I’ll start receiving the boxes from the end of February?
Presumably once I’ve registered I can now log in and order those from October – December?
If you ordered before the clock ran out (Its got 2.5 hours left on it as I type this) you will receive the January box (In February, I believe due to when they post them, and how long it will likely take). Older boxes will become available to buy, once they’ve added them to the shop. They haven’t done this yet, but it will be coming soon.
Hi lawnor, thanks so much for replying to angelicdespot, I really appreciate that 🙂
Hi angelicdespot, so sorry I didn’t catch your messages earlier. Interesting feedback about the button not being visible on your laptop and scrolling not revealing it. We’ll look into reducing the text in the box, or making it wider, so the button is visible higher up. Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention – feedback like that is invaluable for making our website user experience better! You will receive January’s box because you checked out before the subscription window closes at 12am tonight, Lawnor is exactly right 🙂 Same with the older boxes too. They’re going up… Read more »
Thanks @assetdrop and to @lawnor
In the T&Cs I think it says that if you subscribe in month A you won’t receive a box until month B. I don’t know if you’re expecting many people to read the T&C, but I think it contradicts what you’re both saying here – and which I think I did see somewhere else on your website. Certainly the email confirmation I got told me that I would receive this month’s box.
I’m looking forward to it!
Rubber armour very Mad Max, but the finished effect is brilliant for a stealth suit/shield affect love the video guys.
If anyone has been waiting, the previous boxes are now available to order:
