May 12, 2023 by brennon
It's OTT Weekender time! Tuomas Pirinen, the creator behind the 28mm grimdark wargame, Mordheim, has set his sights on a brand new miniatures game featuring themes of heaven and hell called Trench Crusade. Featuring a brand-new set of 32mm miniatures from James Sheriff and with artwork by Mike Franchina, this is looking like an epic new grimdark wargame.
With a good-looking new wargame in the works by the mind behind Mordheim, are those seeking a good grimdark campaign game finally going to be getting themselves the perfect game?

Nice to see GHQ on Indie of the week
Their 10mm ranges are nice but they are bigger and properly proportioned so don’t fir in that well with other ranges out there
The vehicles and ships are beautifully designed but again larger than most other ranges out there and significantly more expensive especially if your looking to play something of the likes Test of Battle or Spearhead . There are cheaper slightly less detailed alternatives but if I coukdcaff8rd it it woukd always be GHQ I’d go for
If your in the UK then Magister Militum is the retailer
It just doesn’t get better than GHQ for 6mm/10mm. Problem is it’s SOOO damn expensive. It’s always amazed me how nobody here in the UK has ever got near to casting 6mm with a similar amount of detail (we’ve got Heroics and Ros, Scotia and Irregular. Hell of a lot cheaper, but the models are rather basic in comparison). 2D6 are probably the nearest, but their range is extremely small (but they’ve only been going for a couple of years now). 2D6 charge £1.20 for a “tank”, vs £2.80 for GHQ from Magister Militum. I’d LOVE to buy more GHQ… Read more »
The newer H&R stuff from what I’ve seen are nice
@phaidknott Has somebody taken over Timecast
not yet TC was still up for sale last I checked
Ok, Trench Crusade seems…odd.. I’ll have to go check out the FB page.
It looks like they are going all in on the grimdark
Does anyone know why there’s a sudden glut of WWI games? There’s Forbidden Psalm: Last War, Gloom Trench 1926, Turnip 28, Blood & Valor, Sludge, and now Trench Crusade. I’m just really curious what triggered this particular zeitgeist. We passed the 100th anniversary years ago so I don’t think it’s that.
Turnip and Sludge are fantasy napoleonics and blood & valor has been out for four years. No idea why the others are cropping up now but maybe it’s because WWII is so saturated as both a market and a concept for fantasy setting.
Think people are looking for grimdark inspiration and WW1 has that in spades I’d say
The dammed from Wargames Atlantic are going to do very well ?
That Mantic Vault does look interesting. I look forward to seeing how it goes and how it affects the companies sales in other areas. How long until other companies jump on board. I’m not convinved that Armada was the best thing to have in the first month. Fantasy naval combat seems like a bit of a niche within a niche to me. Perhaps im alone there though?
but armada is 100% cad designed and resin made, so it will be possible to make the game 100% digital. As far as getting people to take a look it’s easier to say you can get the entire game/range as opposed to saying here are several components, now go and buy a load more stuff and terrain and then you can play the game
Great Weekender!
A new game by Tuomas Pirinen with art by Franchina and I’ve already got minis from Sheriff on the way. Hell, yes.
Well prepped haha
Ghq whoosh my independent, dont ask how many WW2 ships I have and painted for others…,
1st found them in a shop somewhere and used there T72’s in reactive as Battletech Scorpions ( still work well)
If I had endless money, I’d just buy GHQ all the way. But they are just a bit too expensive these days (even Magster Militum don’t get that much of a mark up as with the current exchange rate the $14 price for a pack of five models works out at £11.25). But when it comes to naval models, no-one else comes anywhere near (still remember buying Navwar models back in the day, cheap but VERY basic). I wonder why no-one this side of the pond come near in casting in a similar quality given the decades GHQ (and CinC)… Read more »
Well looked at the Blood Red Skies releases, Warlord seem to be quite happily pricing themselves out of the market….. https://store.warlordgames.com/products/blood-red-skies-heinkel-he-111h-squadron £28 for THREE He 111!!!!!! seems really expensive, especially when you can buy 100 1/300th Battle of Britian plastic minis (perhaps a bit rough, but they are just 10p each) from Plastic Soldier Company. https://www.theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk/product/battle-of-britain-100-x-1-300th-assorted-new-planes-superior-quality-plastic-grab-bag/ (you can also buy the game for just £14 (reduced from being £60)). You also missed showing some of the more “ridiculous” minis from GHQ. Ridiculous not because of any other reason other than “How the devil did they manage to do that in… Read more »
@brennon for your WWII british army, the question you might want to ask yourself is “how many companies” if you want one company of infantry or maybe two or three and a tank company or two. 15mm is fine.
If you want a full battallion of infantry, and a full battallion of tanks, or maybe two full battallion of tanks. 6mm might be more your poison 😉
Or you could do both 😛 both is good. oh and with 28mm with Bolt action and Chain of command, just sayin 0=)
I am very tempted by Chain Of Command despite saying I want to go smaller haha
I really like chain of command, it really scratches my ‘getting it mostly right’ historical accuracy and fluff itch. bolt action is fun but its basically 40k but better and set in ww2 (note, i’ve not played 40k for 8 years now so it may be a bit unfair)
Star Wars Legion prices have definitely leaped, which sucks as it has really been gaining in popularity in my area this year. But then so have Mantic games and the Vault is exciting. I may finally get a 3d printer even! The Armada ships in the first batch are actually everything from the retail fleet starter and fleet booster boxes, so I think what they are labelling as ‘fleet booster’ is probably the XL ships and/or fliers to complete the Orc and Basilean fleets. I already sub to the companion and am very tempted to pick up the vault now… Read more »
happy gaming weekend, OTTers. hope all well
That is a lot of money for some Ewoks.
Are we waiting for the brits, to come as a stretch goal in War Games Athlantic?
wouldn’t have thought so they’re in tooling now and on the release schedule as an upcoming pre-order. Ben is just being impatient
Ben is right.
Manic should do new elves.
They were the first army they did and it shows.
Beautiful new elves would be great.
I love the Mantic 3d STL files for the upgrades.
It is great to upgrade your army.
