Community Spotlight: Mighty Ettins, Gambling Centaurs & A Golden Primarch
November 17, 2017 by crew
Make sure to join us for a stunning Community Spotlight again this week as we feature more of your work from the Hobby & Painting Forum which consistently impresses us.
What do you make of some of the work that has been shown off here in the forums?
Ettin by gorrillawithabrush
We're kicking things off with a project that has been long in the finishing but has ended up looking utterly amazing. Take a look at what gorillawithabrush has been doing as he finished off this amazing Ettin from Atlantis Miniatures.
This massive monster is looking fantastic with a lot of great work being put into the skin and those frankly absurd tattoos which have been painted onto the model. I think the dark leather works exceptionally well against the paler skin and you could see this beast being a great dungeon delving enemy.
Additionally, we also have this amazing looking base which was sculpted and painted too. You can actually check out the link above which shows off some amazing work in video form as the base came to life.
I think we can safely say that the base and the model as a whole are looking perfect. Make sure to take a closer look at the model as well and you'll notice the shadow of a beard around the Ettin's heads, a fantastic little touch. It does conjure up the image of the Ettin using his other head to see if he's shaved properly!
Centaurs by baronvonuppercase
Next up we're sticking with mythical monsters as we take a look at some fantastic Centaurs which were painted up by baronvonuppercase.
Once again we're seeing a really nice contrast between the light and dark on the miniatures and the muscle definition has come out wonderfully as you look at the paint job in more detail. This goes for the work across the torsos as well as the actual horse body and legs.
While normally it would be strange seeing so many of the same miniature, posed as they are, I think this shows a nice degree of skill to match the scheme across all three models. It goes to show that batch painting can build some cool techniques that you can use going forward.
As everyone is getting into the Mythic Battles: Pantheon mood right now with the delivery of the Kickstarter it's neat to see some more of these Greek themed miniatures popping up showing off some cool ideas we could use on our collection at large.
Roboute Guilliman by agis
Last but not least we have agis who has returned with more stunning Warhammer 40,000 models. Here we have his work on Roboute Guilliman, the Primarch of the Ultramarines.
I particularly liked that with this scheme instead of going for blue, Agis went for the striking and powerful gold colour which reflects the Emperor a lot more. It does certainly make sense considering he wields the blade of the Emperor as his weapon of choice.
It tells a nice narrative, as Roboute becomes the stand-in for his father's campaign across the stars, desperately fighting to keep the Imperium intact.
There's even this alternative helmeted version that has been painted up as well. Whilst I'd normally prefer the helmeted version I think in this case the face has been painted so well it looks too fantastic to cover up.
You can see Roboute arrayed here alongside some of agis' Blood Angels and you can start to appreciate the scale of the model at this point. The abundance of gold could have been quite overwhelming but I think the way it has been shaded and dotted with other spot colours makes it fit just right.

Incredible jobs everyone!
Inspiring to see your color scheme for Guilliman, I think I will try something similar myself.
Its been awesome to see the progress and final result of the ettin. Insane job!
Very clean paint job on the centaurs, personally I think the skin and armour looks particularly amazing.
Every single piece is just out of this world and worthy worthy winners @gorillawithabrush – the tattoos just blow my mind, especially the dragon on his thigh, so much detail! @baronvonuppercase – the muscle work on the entirety of the models is just wonderful. Especially like how the light looks to catch the raised areas. I know personally such large smooth areas of skin like the lower centaur body makes me struggle to break up and highlight so seeing it like this is inspiring. @agis – really just stunning work and so much to take away technique wise from a… Read more »
All three are awesome! We’ll deserved.
