GW’s Middle-earth Rebuilds Ahead Of War Of The Rohirrim With New Miniatures! #OTTWeekender
November 15, 2024 by crew
It's OTTWeekender time! Despite the news that so many old miniatures are leaving the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game range, many more are coming to replace them and it looks like GW are rebuilding the game and the range ahead of the release of the brand-new film, The War Of The Rohirrim, set before the time of The Lord Of The Rings!
Some amazing new miniatures were previewed this week by Games Workshop in the form of the mighty Snow Troll that will be making an appearance on the tabletop as well as in the new film! We also got a first look at some of the sneaky Orcs miniatures coming our way too!

Amazing is not a word I would use for those miniatures
Different strokes for different folks
This would mean more if you clarified which minis, we look at loads 🙂 @smithsco
The snow troll and new orcs. Certainly high quality but absolutely jarring compared to most of the MESBG range. Detail is excellent and that may actually be the problem. I can’t picture them on the table next to my other miniatures so not amazing. I know they’re based off the new movie but the sculpting reminds me of AoS not MESBG. So in summary…technical aspects are good but feel is way off
A lot of people felt the same way about some of the new Angmar releases and then when they were seen in the flesh alongside the older miniatures, they ended up looking like good matches. We shall have to wait and see I suppose.
I hope that turns out to be the case here. I’ve been a fan of MESBG since 2007…still have the old blue LOTRSBG rulebook. I fear it’s turning in a direction that will turn me away.
They’re chasing the mythical “wider audience” that never appears. I know from conversations with GW employees that they place a lot of weight of starter sets sales for growth numbers and store viability so you and I buying a new rulebook vs some kid buying a starter set they’ll never play is what GW wants. GW would risk their best game, their very loyal community to chase short term gains.
Look at 40K, it’s player base is almost all post 7th edition, long term players have been left behind, I don’t even recognise the game anymore.
I agree with the 40k thing. I built a big Ork army during the End Times, heavily converted, painted to a level that was at my best; I played it once. I hated 9th edition. I wanted to throat-punch the guy I played against. I’m not like that. I lose at every tournament, and usually take home best sport, or best painted, or both. That’s how crap 40k is, now. I have my Orks for sale.
I mean in fairness I’ve found the Catalyst plastic Battletech stuff in stock from more than a few UK stores.
And fairplay to IWM for updating their metals to match the modern BAttletech aesthetic and using the metal to provide alternate loadouts & poses
The deep dive into IWM *is* reminding me that I need to grab some of the various Infantry & Power Armour units…..
Yay it’s weekender time folk’s 👍😆👍
Lloyd diceing with 💀DANGER💀 (Gerry)
Great plan’s a strong air captain look to them
The seven seas off rhye ?🤔
Worst comment of the week would be a very high bar indeed.
I’m sure you can give it a go lol
I do! Terrible comments almost daily!
I’d probably be in the running too 🤣
For what we’re losing this troll and two orcs feel kind of insulting.
Plus all the other stuff for WotR. I’m not massively annoyed with the stuff that got “legended” bar a few of the Dwarves and Elves.
It’s pretty disgusting, Goblins lost half their major heroes, Rohan lost a bunch, Khand gone, Far Harad gone, zero logic to it, book characters are gone while invented ones are still around, movie characters are gone but invented stuff is still around. They have deleted articles on Warhammer Community where they said stuff about the new edition so I assume they were all just lies. They also deleted the article where they promised that all the new Angmar stuff was going to get free pdf rules since the book was dead on arrival. They keep lying and they keep not… Read more »
I literally lost all my interest in LotR when they cancelled so many minis for what is going to be, at best, an awful cartoon that makes Hello Kitty look epic b
The game table’s look great @warzan
Great show guy’s 👍
Diamond Troll Nipples!
They’re cold for sure. Could cut diamonds with those. As a Canadian, I can relate.
Ah yes – Ral Partha….
The second biggest name (only Minifigs were bigger) in wargaming minis when I first started.
And still some of the most beautiful and iconic fantasy figures ever made, I especially love their Elves and Dragons.
I just tossed 200+ blisters of Minifigs because they were not even worth selling for the weight of shipping. Just right into the recycle bin.
I played LotR when it first came out in the early 00’s, but only bought a smal handful of the ‘official’ GW minis.
My Dwarves were mostly Mithril with a few Grenadier and Vendel mixed in, as far as I’m concerned, Mithril are the closest to what professor Tolkien probably had in mind when he wrote about Middle Earth.
I remember the Uruk Hai being virtually invincible in that game.
I was lucky when LotR came out, there was a volunteer GW program “Grey Knights” in Canada; as a result I got all the books for free (across ALL the ranges!) and was the #1 or #2 event person in Canada. For every event, it was $100 of product, sometimes even more. I had SO MUCH GW product.
Interesting to hear Gerry’s comments on Battletech , think the period played can very much depend on the game you want to play. If you want to play how I learned the game as a semi roleplaying campaign with most of players taking the part of a lance or Company then he is totally right on playing in pre Clan era , particularly for the umpire , who has enough to do running multiple mechs without exotic weaponary. The game can be speeded up for normal games by allowing better piloting and wpn skills . Star league era wpns are… Read more »
