Should Mantic Games Go Epic With Warpath? Have Your Say!
August 2, 2023 by brennon
Mantic Games have been discussing the future of Warpath. A lot of work has already gone on behind the scenes from Matt alongside Alessio Cavatore to bring the rules, miniatures and more to life for Warpath but on an "Epic" scale. However, with another big company doing something similar, Mantic want your say...
The Future Of Warpath In Your Hands
As Ronnie says in this video, a lot of work has gone into Warpath at this stage but they need the backing of the community to know that this isn't going to fall by the wayside and get overshadowed by the monolith that is Legions Imperialis from Games Workshop.

As it stands, the game is going to be a small-scale affair (somewhere between 12-15mm) with all manner of miniatures getting turned into TINY takes on their 28mm brothers and sisters. The Two-Player Starter Set has already been thought about with the Enforcers going up against the Plague featuring loads of infantry, tanks and walkers. Additionally, there are plans in development for the Forge Fathers and Asterians as armies three and four.

On the rules side of things, the manuscript for Warpath is now available for you to download and read through HERE. It will give you an idea of where the game stands and help inform your decision-making when it comes to helping out Mantic.
There is a forum that you can fill out HERE which could help Mantic make a decision on where to go next. Do they continue with their idea and create Warpath as intended? That means plastic armies, a retail release and more. The other option is that Warpath could become a digital product with STL files and rules available online.
You can feed into the discussion and have your way on the future of Warpath. One bonus that the game does have is that it will feature alien races. Whereas Legions Imperialis features just human forces (and superhuman ones I suppose), Warpath will feature the varied races that Mantic have created for their Sci-Fi universe.
So what do you think? Where does the future of Warpath lie in your opinion?

Well that’s an old school logo right there!
I love Mantic and I want Warpath to succeed. I still play the old rules with 15mm proxies and it is great, but I don’t think it can compete with Epic 40K. I would postpone the game a year and see how the new Epic version does. I know I will be diving in to Epic, because it was always my main game. Therefore funds are low and I cannot focus on two games with the same premise at the same time. I will buy the Warpath rules if they come out – but only that. Whatever Mantic choose to… Read more »
But it is not epic 40k, it is epic Horus Heresy that is coming and because of this a lot of people are not interested as they want their xenos to play with. And if epic HH isn’t doing well then they won’t introduce xenos factions.
I agree they should wait but I don’t think it will take a year to know the result of epic HH, just like the normal Horus Heresy.
It’s not just the lack of xenos factions (especially no Eldar titans). Being stuck in the HH means I won’t be able to field epic Sisters of Battle as they didn’t exist till long after the Heresy ended. Also, plenty of other Imperium vehicles and units from 40K didn’t exist back then either.
No xenos is not a barrier to entry unfortunately. At my club we will be 3D printing out the xenos races in the new scale. And as for the rules, we are waiting until the book comes out to see if we can adapt Epic Armageddon profiles. Since I play Imperium (Astartes and IG) I will be getting the box set and one of each supplement – then I will print out larger armies. After that, if Warpath is still a thing, I will get in to it.
But it does for GW. If they don’t sell kits they will kill the game and this is what will be important for Mantic to see if/when they will launch their game.
Might be easier to adapt the profiles from 2nd edition (Space Marine) which this latest version does seem to be very much alike.
I have all the Epic versions. It would not be a problem, but how do you know it is similar to 2nd? Is it from the Warhammer Community articles that I never read?
It sounds awesome, and I think their army choices are good to start. I’d love to see them go a little smaller with the scale, 10mm, but 12mm would work.
15mm is the plan for Warpath if they go with it, although if it ends up being STL driven then that scale can be whatever you want
Flames of Warpath?
I watched the video, read the blog, and completed the survey. I didn’t see any firm commitment to the ultimate scale (15mm or 12-15mm), just where it’s mentioned in this article. Did I miss something? Thanks.
I love the scale but somehow the minis don’t grab me. There nice but just that.
Alessio Cavatore helped to write rules. That’s a good thing. Happy to wait for this before deciding to start this or LI.
Huge fan of the universe. I have an army for every Firefight faction.
I am just torn on this one. I dont know if the pull is there for epic games or not. You can not base anything off of what GW does, those fans will buy anything the put out.
Love the Avatar-ish looking walkers.
In these smaller scales BattleTech and Dropzone Commander occupy my interest. I prefer Dropzone to almost all sci fi games because of the models and the rules. Mantic makes nice models but they just don’t compare to the Dropzone models. BattleTech is, for me, a nostalgia trip so it’ll always hold a place in my heart.
MANTIC IS GREAT BUT GERRY IS ABOUT TO DELETE ME AS I’M A SPAMBOT
The one thing that Mantic is doing right, imo, is naming the downloadable file something at least vaguely understandable, rather than the alphanumeric soup system GW uses.
An interesting idea that I think for me is more inspiring than Limp
I read the rules and they seem ok . I would prefer a firefight mechanic over an actual hand to hand combat phase
Be interesting to see what scale they end up with if they do continue with the idea
Do it MANTIC! A killer starter box and then STL releases and faction starters. HH epic is cool but very limited.
If that is not a Kickstarter…then I don´t now what is. Checking the market and secure funding. What else do you need? Mantic would have the better “new Epic” in all ways. Better rules, pricing and variety.
So…do it fast…the less will get into boring fake epic 😉
It’s a risk, but better than taking GW head-on. Also, it’s less expensive, by skipping the distributor and retail middlemen. Might also be able to sell the stl’s as a subscription format, like they’re already doing for their stl products, or even branch out into a 3D printing service. Mantic could even have a regular convention centered around stl printing, 3D printers, and the printing industry. Retailers would no doubt not support them with tournaments, though I don’t know if Mantic has tournament support for its products.
Mantic doesn’t have titans. My son hasn’t the patience – although he tries – for the full blown Adeptus Titanicus and the much simpler rules of Legiones Imperialis are more appealing.
Oddly, these days we both want ‘bigger’ models. We’ve really liked Conquest’s scale. I appreciate this is of no use to Mantic, but I would do something completely different rather than coat-tail Workshop. I understand why they would – a sale is a sale, after all but go after Battletech, or Warmachine and create a simple ruleset with big stompy robots a la the original Adeptus Titanicus?
I’d prefer a smaller scale.
12-15mm seems a halfway house.
I think a lot of the fond memories for the old Space Marine game was due to it being released by a very different company to the current GW. Their new iteration is going to be expensive, multiple rulebooks/card to buy (and basically poor quality/un playtested rules to boot). For Mantic to revive those fond memories and bring out a game that will draw in gamers, they need to do almost exactly what GW did back in the 90s. Bring out a single hard plastic sprue with basic troopers, support weapons, jet bikes etc. And then cram multiple sprues in… Read more »
