LEVEL 7 [OMEGA PROTOCOL] is Privateer Press’ best-selling board game, which has been out of print since 2016.
Since it sold out several years ago, we have received countless inquiries about when it would be coming back, and original copies of the game currently sell for nearly $300 on the aftermarket.
From our perspective, it seems demand for a new edition has reached critical mass, and it’s time to reprint. But is it? You decide!
Have you played any of the Privateer Press Board Games?

The game is great, the communication before the KS was not good. They did not set correct expectations and did not give everyone enough information about what is new. They also flip-flopped their wording between “reprint” and “2nd Edition” — to the gaming community, these have different meanings. They are scrapping to keep it from sliding backward. You can see kicktraq.com if you do not believe me. They get a C for execution while the game is still an A. They have made some recent updates that are good and it is closer to B. This video, for example, should… Read more »
I felt that way about the Widower’s Wood Kickstarter. The game and minis are good, but the Kickstarter was definitely not run optimally.
I get the impression that they haven’t been paying attention to what works on Kickstarter.
Also did not care for the way they treated people new to this game vs people who already owned the game. If you were new you could get the expansion at a significantly reduced priced but they did not offer it as an add-on for people who already owned the first edition. To me that is Kickstarter 101. They used the lame excuse that it was still available at retail but in my neck of the woods it is still hard to get at a reasonable price. This bothered me the most about this Kickstarter.
the back story of this game sounds brilliant.
I do have to wonder if they might want to try and make this in to a new war game. Which could be fun since you got two alien factions and the humans could have one ‘mega’ faction. With a bunch of others like Standard US military, Super tech Butt Kickers, and easily the other nations as well. If they do that they could just make some conversions packs for the humans. Since there are a ton of models people can get for them. Just make up some rules for units and alien models…Okay now I am getting excited by… Read more »
i was fooled by the warmachine tactics KS. no more.
i doubt Omega Protocol “sells” for 300. it may be LISTED for that, but no one buys it so high.
i agree with the botched communication from PP.
I didn’t back that one. Was WM Tactics not a good video game?
I don’t know how much of an indicator that would be- this is a reprint for a game that is currently sold out. You can find tons of reviews- quite unlike most Kickstarters.
While I do think you’re right about it being listed at $300 (rather than selling for $300) it does look like it is selling higher than MSRP.
Oh, by the way, for full disclosure, I did back Widower’s Wood. While I do not feel that KS was run very well, I did like the game that they sent me. It was late, but not egregiously late (well within normal for kickstarter).
The game is OK-ish viewed standing alone as a video game, and it got subsequent updates afterwards too (Retribution), but it does not feel like Warmachine. And the single player campaign was artificially hard, by just throwing unfair enemies at you, with spawns appearing in your back arc and enemy troops being the scissor to your paper or simply pinning your troops against the game map border. It has awful movement and positioning UI. Also I had the impression that my own attacks were always missing while the enemy was always hitting, implying higher stats for enemies as a cheap… Read more »
From what I can tell, “Money Grab” is a word for anything that the speaker might not care for. From your description, it sounds more like a tiny indy studio with a small budget trying to make a video game look like an A-List game (cut scene animation is a pretty massive expense that most indy game developers cannot afford). I mean, their Kickstarter was successful, but it didn’t raise Starcraft kind of money. From what you’ve been saying, I can’t quite tell if it apes the tabletop combat too closely, or if it is too far away. Either could… Read more »
