Let’s Play – Waterloo: Quelle Affaire! By River Horse
December 27, 2016 by warzan
The time has come for two legendary generals to clash. Well - we say that but it's Justin & Warren taking control of Napoleon and Wellington's forces at Waterloo using River Horse's excellent board game - Quelle Affaire!
Alessio Cavatore, the games creator, is also joining them on the side of Justin and the British playing as the Prussians (if they arrive!). Warren therefore is left with Napoleon - I think that's quite fitting.
Will history repeat itself today or will we find ourselves seeing the battle twist and turn to create a new narrative?
Watch and find out!

yassss!
I’ve been waiting all day for this to appear 😀 .
I’ve been waiting for this all week! And just in time for lunch here at work, too.
Can I just take a moment before I even watch this to compliment the ******-lovin’ hell out of whoever did the image workup of Lord Justington and Emperor Warzan Blown-apart? 😀 I especially like the filter put over the faces to make it look like an old oil painting. From someone who’s waist-deep in Photoshop at least once a day, well done!
@warzan, it’s borderline scary … you almost look like Napoleon did in that painting.
lol
yup @lance did a bang up job on that.
It’s been a week of hell in here (a lot of heavy lifting filming wise, and this video took 3 days just to get uploaded after failing about 15 times!)
But we’re there now, it should be in HD in a few hours
Well, I can die happy now, @warzan . I have lived long enough to see you play a hex-and-counters historical game! Next up, Panzer Leader! 😀 😀
And I loved every minute of it 🙂
Or WW2.5 – I know they have a copy
^^ this 🙂
Funny you should mention that, some of the mechanics are vaguely similar. Basically, attacking units roll lots of dice against adjacent defending units, successes are counted, and results are determined by the margin per a simple chart printed on the map.
I swear WW2.5 was created before this game! 😀
Now they need to play a game of A World At War by Bruce Harper. 😀
viva la England
Yay. The Dutch prince William II (aka ‘Prince of Orange’) gets to act first … (like he should)
Historically he would be wounded during the battle.

Sharpe did it 😉
oh … so that’s the thanks we got for supporting the British.
Yea, shot in the bum by Richard Sharp according to Mr Cornwell
Sorry it was the sea captain who had creased buttocks not William
That was Paul Bettany playing that role, wasn’t it?

Yes it was @oriskany .
I wanted to shoot the Prince of Orange myself watching Sharpes Waterloo. Was he really that incompetent ? Or was that played out like that for the program ? ( I really should do some more research on Waterloo either way ).
The British told the world he was incompetent, that’s why it is in movies (yet another ‘did not do research’ topic) Historians seem to think that it was more lack of experience. The Dutch considered him to be a hero. You’ve also need to remember that (at that time) Waterloo was part of Dutch territory! So having Napoleon on our lawn again after the horrorible things he did to us (like taxes and forcing us to have a surname) was plenty of reason for us to want to kick him out for good. It was only after (what is now)… Read more »
@kantor72 He wasn’t as bad as shown in Sharpe’s and he was actually shot by the enemy not one of his own Colonels. He actually didn’t make men form lines to be charged by cavalry but there is a time he send some Jagers to support the 95th Rifles but due to a language barrier they couldn’t tell them not to advance and they ran into a French volley.

A big thank you to @limburger and @elessar2590 for filling in a gap in my ( profoundly amateur ) knowledge concerning the Peninsular war and Waterloo in particular. Small details such as this are always nice to have corrected / filled in properly.
Excellent play through, really glad I picked the game up at Expo from Alessio on the Suday before leaving. I’ll be playing it soon & winning as Napoleon 🙂
Going to sit down and watch this later tonight with a beer.
Good beans Justin
Con grats Waran nicely played.
Sorry to Justin.
Henceforth I shall refer to you as Doctor Spoilerface. Jolly poor show.
Never read comments before watching the show.
Great job to all the chaps getting this monster of a gaming session out for us to thoroughly enjoy.
Oh, it’s on! Im going to need snacks for this 🙂
You know when you are absorbed in something when you find yourself shouting at the screen like I just did. Which bit of “hold the line!” Did Justin not understand? If only he’d retreated the Scots greys and kept his heavy infantry back and not gone off chasing the guard artillery I think he could have held on for Blucher. Then again it wouldn’t have been half as entertaining!
Cheers for a great show to watch, whilst finally got some hobby time in. 🙂
My first thought when opening this page was “How *bleeping* long is this video?!” But it was a very entertaining report as always. The game is actually more exciting than I had imagined. I’m even tempted to get a copy.
Chasing off the French Guard artillery was brilliant. And it was fun to see the French have ‘la boum’ (meaning party) with the English. Also a valiant defence of the Dutch, which can only be applauded. 🙂
very cool
which history book would you guys recommend to accompany the game?
remember playing panzer blitz back in the day but I was a bit to young.
which other hex and counter games would you historical fellas recommend?
is there any good ones out there with a campaign system?
Napoleon The Great is for me THE Nappy biography. Though I don’t always agree with David Chandler’s opinions he is the MASTER of the topics and most of his books are well worth trying out. I believe he has one on Waterloo. Though his must have book is ‘The Campaigns of Napoleon’. Combo that one with Napoleon The Great (the biography) and you should have an extremelysolid basis in the topic from which you can dig into specifics. Careful though the Napoleonic Wars remains very divisive. You can regretfully quickly see when it is an English, French or German author.… Read more »
I do like that Alessio did exactly what I did and hummed songs all through the game
Turn 3 when the guard retreated should have triggered another morale check, right?
Time to watch Justin do his normal tactic of sending his best units forward without help just like dark age 🙂 cannot wait for this, have my snacks ready. Roll on Waterloo!!! (Sharpe theme tune playing in my head).
actually watched this a bit this morning when I could not sleep intended to watch the first turn or so then go back and watch the rest later. What a mistake, just heading back up having watched it all tea went cold and time flew past. fantastic game fantastic, thanks again guys really enjoyed that.
Victoria has announced she was going to have to get a couple of new tops, now though its this game and the top’s her words will just have to wait. LOL. I am such a lucky bassa!
Nice report guys, definitely got this on my radar 🙂
This was one of the best and funnest vids I saw you guys do. I wouldn’t mind see you guys do a pt2. See the Prussians pop up in a slightly longer game.
Although I’m pleased ‘my’ side won 😉
There was a potentially gamechanging mistake at a certain moment though. I think the guard moved back a 2nd time at a certain moment. Though I might be mistaken. Should that not have caused more tests?
Actually I stand corrected. Checked the rulebook. Morale check only the first time a Guard Unit retreats. Which seems more balanced than each time. 🙂 In any case awesome game!
watched the first hour looking like a great game is happening.
a great game guys, was close in the middle.
Quelle Affaire!
It was very good fun to film this… and I hope it comes across!!!
The only setback was that Warren Bonaparte managed a surprise win before I could come in at the head of my Prussians… I was looking forward to my oh-so-perfect German accent!!!
😉
Yes I am secretly hoping for a rematch. One where this time we also see the Prussians pop up!
give me night or give me Blucher….or one more turn at least 🙂
really enjoyed this kind of game. I never thought I would like watching some small squares moving on a board, but it was very captivating. I will definitely look into getting this game. Any fantasy/scifi settings with this hexagonal type of game you guys would recommend?
Well done chaps. Really enjoyed this, nice to see you presenting a proper epic in true epic style. Unlucky Justin, you’ll get him next time.
I was thinking getting this game before, but i.m not into Napoleonics. But after watching the gameplay I,m eager to try it with some non wargamers friends of mine.
Simple and ellegant.
