Oak & Iron is the newest game from Firelock games, a historical naval battle in the age of piracy.
You play as ship commanders sailing the high seas taking your enemies by force, the game is still in development so it's likely to change and if you have any suggestions feel free to add your comments below for consideration.
What do you think of Oak & Iron?
Ive read the ship’s are 1/600. Is that correct?
Yes, that’s what I’ve read and heard in a few podcast that Mike was involved with
That’s correct 🙂
Thats what they said in the video.
THIS! Exactly this is what I was waiting to see. I can’t wait to empty my wallet for this game!
May I request that the rulers, wake and fire boards are made from acrylic if possible or at least plastic card at min versus paper. The paper ones never last they are just not durable.
I hate to be a cannon-ball-buster… but 2:13 into the video… the Pirate Card… Rouges?… really, rosy-red cheeked pirates?… lol…
Good catch lol
Lol had a double take when I saw that too ?
Lol, game was still in development so some spelling errors may appear.
Looks great and very much got that navel feel, I’ll keep my eye out for it. I cant help but remember @warzan talking about getting some ships for the Battle of Trafalgar (I know its about 50 years after this, but could this ruleset cover this period or has technology advanced to much?).
The size of Trafalgar did have larger ships than the 5th Rake I seen for Oak & Iron so far
we plan on having 5th through 1st at release 🙂
Thanks @rasmus, @firelockgames1 you’ve really looking forward to this now, although I expect my wallet wont thank you.
Backing Oak & Iron is a no-brainer for me. I love the age of fighting sails and the mechanics of the game look solid and fun!
1st rates, we should have them in B&P lol. When not in use we can use them as a Sofa.
Looking forward to seeing this in action
Well worth watching – had to pause in the middle for dinner
Interesting game, I have played a number of similar games. May just have to think about investing in this… But the question is can my wallet afford it…?
I’m really curious about pricing (not that it will stop me from backing!)… but at this scale, I feel like that makes it more of an issue of ‘how many ships and factions do I want’ and not so much “how much is the starter set” =p… #AllTheShips
That makes two of us 😉
All the ships of course … at least that tends to negate the cost of shipping a bit.
So … me three 😉
ship battles my favorite sunday afternoon pastime
Can’t wait for this to come to kickstarter
looks interesting; an update to the old SWIM. The movement rates are off; running is slower than reaching. I am guessing for game simplification?
Thats right. The difference between running and broad reaching would be minimal at battle sail. It would be significant in a chase, but much less so once battle begins. For that reason, we find it best to simplify that aspect of it so that players have one less angle to check which helps speed up gameplay and bring the focus to the positioning of your fleet and command and control decisions.
I like this game
I think adding a wind direction marker may help with dice determination based on wind direction
Would like to see a card for the fatigue and to get the discs off the ships; too fiddly I think
The tokens on the base are optional. You will have tracking for everything on the ship card. There will be a wind tool as well 🙂
Are these going to be plastic? What is a typical amount for a battle?
They will be plastic. 3-5 ships for a squadron game and 9+ for a fleet game.
This game would be a good opportunity to build pirate / captain specific box sets as I was asking about in the live stream
A 2 player starter I think would be a good way to get us all into this. We can buy a set with a rulebook, templates and 2 small fleets makes the entry to this easy!
That’s the plan!
Please no bases. Too Sails of Glory.
The final bases will be clear plastic. The bases are critical for checking your position to the wind and firing arcs.
Awesome. Looking forward to pledging thisone as well!
Maybe I missed this with the kiddos distracting me on and off throughout the video. What factions will be released with KS? Will you be putting any terrain on the board?
Been wanting to play a ship game for ages… This looks like it’s the one!
Will there be some sort of link/conversion to the blood&plunder rules ?
Think of how Dropfleet and Dropzone allowed for an interactive battle.
Ships winning the battle at sea being allowed to reach land at the B&P table would make for an awesome display …
Yes!
cool 🙂
My wallet is going to hate me … I just know it.
Are the ships going to be plastic?
I think a wind marker of some kind would be good to help with dice determination during game play
I agree with others here that placing chips on ships makes gameplay maybe too fiddly.
This game is great; fills the void and gets those old Man O War gamers back to the hobby!
I think a 2 player starter with the rules and 2 sets of ships would be a great way to market this out initially.
Also the famous captain box set idea may work here?

Subscribed! I hope you provide some historical background with the game or maybe scenarios. Question, will these ships be painted? Will there be a way to customize them for a faction?
Really looking into this one. I have the sails of Glory, but seemed to fiddly. This on the other hand plays pretty smoothly. I assume that the ships come unpainted (?).. I hope that decals will be an option. I might start with a 2-player box .. hope that it will come with 2sets of dice and 2 sets of rulers. 😀 I also like the idea of 4Ground being involved for possible terrain options. Great idea. I love seeing the gameplay .. and hope that there are many more videos of gameplays forthcoming. Good job Guys!!
Please, please, please provide a historical painting guide for each nation if they are umpainted.
