The Dropfleet Commander Kickstarter Launches & Funds!
October 30, 2015 by brennon
The Dropfleet Commander Kickstarter from Hawk Wargames has now launched allowing you to begin pledging on their Starter Box for the game which includes both the Scourge and UCM locked in deadly combat around a planet...
The Game
A game of Dropfleet Commander has you taking control of a fleet of ships and using a rules system by Hawk and Andy Chambers you then duke it out in battles that don't take place in deep space but instead in orbit around planets.
Some of the fascinating aspects of this game from the rules are that ranges are effectively infinite in space so targeting and shooting is all based on the signature of your ship. This is influenced by your speed, the amount of weapons you're firing and more.
Check Out The Kickstarter Here
As well as the combat taking place in orbit there are additional objectives for games of Dropfleet where you have to take control of key points on the planet below while also keeping the skies clear. This is a multi-levelled game even though you're doing all of your fighting in space.
The Miniatures
The miniatures, in 1:15,000 scale are all expertly made by Hawk Wargames and continue their trend of making wonderful miniatures packed with detail at a small scale. Here you can see both the UCM and Scourge fleet both looking rather impressive indeed.
I think that I'm looking at the UCM as my fleet of choice. I really like the design of the ships which has something of the Halo about it. They all look like big floating cities which is exactly what they are.
The Pledges
Of course now we get to the nitty gritty of the pledges. You can get your hands on the miniatures you've seen above, the rulebook, and also some additional extras like the Dice, Tape Measure, Tokens and Gaming Mat showing a planet surface...
Further from that we have a different selection of pledge levels...
- Lieutenant - Rulebook & Starter Fleet
- Commander - Two Player Starter Set
- Captain - Two Player Starter Set + Special Edition Ship
- Admiral - Everything + Beta Access
...and there will also be additional support with Bolt Ons. The Bolt Ons include additional gaming mats and also the Atlantis Class Battlecruiser which you see below as an exclusive.
Keep an eye out for our Dropfleet Weekend videos as we'll be taking you through the game as it stands and talking tactics with Simon from Hawk Wargames.
Are you liking the look of the game so far?

I was lucky enough to be the first backer in and snatch up an admiral pledge. So excited for this game. The speed of funding just shows how much trust the community has in the hawk team.
I’m unlikely to pledge, but I hope it’s gonna be a good kickstarter.
I will undoubtedly get this game in retail.
Looking forward to this game. UCM and Scourge fleet look awesome! But really want to see PHR.
I am on the fence until the strech goals have been revealed… not so keen on the Scourge, so would like to combine the UCM with something else.
Boom! You can call me Captain. So excited for this game. Can’t wait to see some PHR models.
I am very impressed with it. The modular nature of the sprues (I can’t wait to see them!) is very clever since it leads to so many different unit variants, and both fleets look absolutely beautiful – by far the prettiest looking spaceship miniatures I’ve seen. I also like those playmats, they look great and so much more interesting than space IMO. If they put out a PHR fleet, I am SO in.
You deserved this success Dave.
£500 to get involved in the beta day, Hawk what have you done?
One of the last companies that really valued their client base have turned their backs on their experienced and loyal players
I stayed on my machine hoping from six this morning to get one of the few coveted places but completely priced out of any chance
Loving the minis, great to see the amount of support and looking forward to more revelations. My only suggestion would be that there is too much of a gap between Admiral and Captain. I would have suggested something in the £200 bracket that did not involve the BETA test event but somewhere between Admiral and Captain in content and rewards. I could not justify Admiral level as I would not be able to attend the event and would not want to dent it to anyone who could. The Shaltari renders are stunning. But there’s no indication if they hit on… Read more »
I really hope they open up the “Commander – Two Player Starter Set” pledge so that you can pick which 2 forces you’d want.
@ardnut, there are a lot of people feeling like that. I would happily buy 2 for 4 Shaltari fleets. Instead I have just pledged for 4 Shaltari fleets and a selection of add ons
I have done kickstarter before but this is my first ‘big’ backing
Love the look of the game, just don’t like the bizarre options available in the kickstarter.
You can only get the Kickstarter Exclusives if you buy TWO 2-player boxes?
It’s a bit rough, being all excited to get in on the ground floor of a new game, then suddenly feeling like I’m either outta the gang already, or been wrangled…
Beyond excited for this. I just started Drop Zone commander in the last few months and we are working on a campaign for 5 people at our club.
Once DFC releases I aim to start with drop fleet games week one of the month. Week two will be the planet you are taking over. Week three the capital while week four will be getting out.
Should be a blast!
