In Carnacki I found the real world mysterious more interesting than the supernatural ones. Also what of ‘Casting the Runes’ by M R Jones, and the Macabre horror of Mr Poe?
Have to agree – anything by M R James is golden 🙂 – Recommend Ghost Stories of Antiquary – awesome stories
To be honest I was never really in to gothic horror hammer house? May have something to do with that. More sci-fi when I was younger, have read many warhammer books over the years cant remember a bad one.
Clark Ashton Smith, Dunsany and Robert Bloch for me this year.
I’m missing “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym” by Edgar Allan Poe. I read this story in high-school and it has always stuck with me. The most haunting moment for me was the stowaway scene at the beginning of the book.
The unease this story generates stems mostly from the believability and realism of the accounts described in the book. Up to the unraveling of the world in the final part of the book.
I considered including Pym in this list, but ultimately I thought these works better represented the different aspects of the genre.
I did my dissertation on Arthur Gordon Pym – really interesting story and delves into a lot of the thought around exploration and pushing the limits. Very good for use in Cthulhu based stories of the weird and looking at the unexplored in role-playing…
BoW Ben
these are possibly my favourite articles on the site, always come away aith atleast one book to add to my kindle library
That is great to hear. These actually take me a surprisingly long time to put together.
No graphic novels!? 😛
There are only so many times I can write read Hellboy and Hellblazer.
A really interesting article and a really intersting list! Frankenstein is the only one I’ve read. Will have to try to correct that!
Carnacki from Hodgson… Lovely precursor of the french “Inquiétante étrangeté” !
What’s that Romain?
